Hertsscot
Hadn't seen anyone post this as yet but Billy Thomson died aged 64. Sad news, he was a great keeper for Dundee United back in the day and the only reason he didn't win more Scotland caps was because he had the misfortune to be up against Jim Leighton. Firstly he was a great goalkeeper for St.Mirren and his understudy at Love Street was Campbell Money who was another class goalkeeper.RIP big man. Ally Bongo
He seemed to be an ever present for decades and it was sad news hearing he had passed away - made me a bit maudlin The Jan Michael Vincent of Scottish Football in that he always looked in his 20s when he was over

I think there was various reasons why he never got capped more often, but think its mainly that Stein did not fancy him, then in 84 he had a fall out with Alex Miller that seen him dropped at St Mirren, then sold to Dundee United where he played second fiddle to McAlpine originally before finally being United number one, and that kind of cost him a place at the 86 World Cup, coupled with the emergence of Andy Goram, he really should have been a solid option around 87-89 to be in squads, but do not recall him being in any during his time at United. Malcolm
Another one from growing up. Remember him playing for st mirren and dundee utd and alway seemed to be on the bench for scotland. So young - shame.
Squirrelhumper
Great servant at Killie as a coach for almost 15 years. Had a fantastically respected round of applause at Tannadice on saturday. Very apt that we were playing Utd.

Mental when you think how many caps a bang average keeper like Rough got.

If you think that, go watch Northern Ireland v Scotland in 1981.... its up there with Leighton v Sweden at Ibrox in terms of performances by Scottish goalkeepers (same year he won The Scottish Football Writers Player of The Year). Stayed to long at the Jags and by time he got his move away he was over the hill, but by 1970's standards, was probably the best we had. Prone to balls up in big games, but could just as easily play a blinder.
