  1. Radio 4 stats programme, Covid-19 special: More or Less
  2. Can't be sure, but probably 1971 - '72 season, against some mob like Gillingham. I mainly remember being struck by the colour, and how fat most of the players were, after a black & white diet of the 'athletes' served up on MotD, FA cup finals and the Mexico WC. Mainly local lads like Steve Uzelac fueled by pies, beer and fags. The exception being Peter Kitchen, the English Steve Heighway; I'm not sure I've ever had a hero to match him since.
  3. And, speaking of the great DiL, here's one of his: https://soundcloud.com/projectseven/sevendials-projectseven and one he and brant collaborated on: https://soundcloud.com/projectseven/woolly-secova-and-projectseven
  4. Ha, that was a while ago (think it developed into an argument with someone about the possibility of living at altitude - the good ol' TAMB). Amboseli was parched when I was there. Hope you enjoyed it; it's a great part of the world. It's very puzzling, and of course I only see it from here, and I guess the Japanese government response was relatively swift but nothing like the scale of China and the virtual cutting off of Wuhan. If you take the Diamond Princess out of the equation, the number of reported cases still seems very low given the movement between neighbouring countries that had it bad, initially at least. One factor might be the relative concentration of cases - S Korea seemed to be that Christian sect (dunno what it is about Koreans and the weirder fringes of Christianity), and China seemed to be able to contain it (Hong Kong seems to have escaped remarkably unscathed; I was there during SARS and it was way worse). So numbers were high but concentrated, and the vast majority of travellers were virus free. In the case of Japan, there's also cultural factors. Apart from commuter trains there's not much physical contact - certainly the country's entire female population has been practising strict social distancing from me for getting on for five years; generally, the population is far fitter and more hygiene conscious than any other country I've known; restaurants are still popular, but almost always the kitchen is visible to the diners - food's often prepared in the same room, or at most behind glass, so habitual cleanliness is just part of the process. Makes a difference; maybe.
  5. It's the second time that's happened here; both were on that cruise ship. I'd put it down to poor testing, but that's just an assumption.
  6. Honestly don't know. As said, school's closed a couple of weeks ago; most large gatherings banned (the current Osaka grand sumo championship is behind closed doors, museums, concert venues shut), but as I said, the number of Chinese and Koreans who were traveling here (and Japanese there) in the early days was huge, so you'd expect more hot-spots.
  7. Ey up, TDyer. I don't really think this can be classed as a positive, particularly since it was actually the demise of Genesis P. Orridge that brought me back (unless that was Covid19-related, which, considering the life s/he'd led, would be a bit of a bastard).
  8. With Air NZ we were able to put the flights on hold for six months and then rebook within the next six months; so hoping to go this time next year with no penalty. Emirates used to be twats, unless you'd gone for one of the more expensive ticketing options. I can see Emirates buying up every other global airline in the coming months as this'll fuck the lot of 'em.
  9. We were due to fly to New Zealand from Japan a few days ago, but decided against it. Non-essential, and the friend we were due to stay with is in her 70s, not worth the chance of picking something up on the plane and transferring it to her. Couple of days after we cancelled, NZ put all arrivals on self-isolation anyway (not sure how that would work in practice). Seems odd that Japan hasn't seen higher numbers - most in Hokkaido - considering the amount of movement between here, S Korea & mainland China. Schools were closed a fortnight back, bit of a bog roll shortage for a while, but life's more or less as normal atm. A lot of talk about true numbers being suppressed from fear of Olympic cancellation, but don't think they'd be that daft. Sorry to see you're having to self-isolate, Huddersfield. All the best [shit - the emoji bank has gone wank]
  10. Sorry, there appears to be a rule thing going on, but can we squeeze in a RIP number? Genesis P. Orridge has snuffed it.
  11. Just back in Osaka having been up at Suzuka for the grand prix. I honestly don't think it would have made any difference had it been a 'big' team that had a tournament-critical match cancelled. One thing I've learned out here is that the language is a right bastard … the other thing is that the Japanese operate on a basis of rigid inflexibility. The scenario was in the pre-tournament rules, and they'd have been followed (and were followed in two cases) regardless. it's cultural, and the Rugby World Cup isn't going to change this culture. T'ra
  12. Yeah, I thought about the possible influence of the chripper effect, but figured there'd always be some dark knight come along to carry on the good fight for three at the back. More pertinent might be that any apparent increase is well within the likely margin of statistical error given my back-of-the-tab-pack methodology.
  13. Really didn't like Willie Young, and that was before he ushered in the professional foul rule by hacking down a 17-year-old kid who was through on goal in the 1980 FA cup final.
  14. It could work, but you've picked the wrong 'Darren'. I'm sure Peterborough would be open to offers Come on, SFA, go for it ...
  15. Yup, the games were dire. But I was working in Cairo at the time and when they drew with the Netherlands it was like they'd won the tournament. Just one huge street party. Things tailed off a bit after that, right enough.
  16. You appear to believe that this board popped into existence the day you started posting on it. Scotty's bible-based cosmology has been discussed on a number of threads over the years and thoroughly refuted to the satisfaction of everybody except Scotty (ok, maybe one other …). Hence, no need to plough the same furrow again.
  17. It's Ormond's birthday (well, it is in Japan … you, and he even more so, will have to wait a few hours yet). Maybe outing himself on the TAMB was just a mid-life crisis. He'll be buying a Harley next. Happy birthday (in ten hours CST) Ormond!
  18. Ta for sorting those for me Orraloon; I imagine its something to do with my browser settings.
  19. Aye, sad to see him gone. First saw Buzzcocks at an Anti-Nazi League rally in Manchester in '77. Next around '79 at a club in Sheffield and Joy Division were the support. Last saw 'em maybe 15 years back. Pete had put on the pounds - enjoying himself, I hope. Loads of good memories with Pete Shelley connections. Early Buzzcocks using a riff that I guess had been left them by Howard Devoto - he used it again with Magazine's 'Shot By Both Sides': https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S7_hYWbJDtc Pete solo - colliding with early '80s sequencing; still toe-tapping though: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2HwmO_GZfzI
  20. Yes and Yes. And then 1.07: keeper, header, header, volley, ball touches the earth at the back of the net, Shilton wonders who to blame. Duncan II's use of 'beauty' is bang on - Hoddle brought it to the game again and again.
