Eca Discussing Champs League Changes

I agree but that ship sailed a long time ago and there is little or no chance of the current champions league going down to champions only. The greedy feckers (allegedly) AC milan have attempted to get some sort of pass into it on the basis of previous history. Let alone what the 5 who met yesterday were really discussing. The EPL is the most commercially successful league around because compared to the others it is relatively equitable when it comes to the moolah. Personally I think if these 5 teams were really discussing a closed shop league they will be signing their own death warrants. I think they are confusing football fans with american football fans and they will come right unstuck !!

Apparently they were discussing a European Super League - not a popular concept in anyway amongst fans :ok:

The only really funny thing would be to see liverpool finishing bottom every year after Jamie Redknapp and Phil Thompson predicted that this year they would definitiely win it, repeating spirit of shankly and  boot room quotes ad nauseum ;-)

Interestingly, it's because it's so offensively, disgustingly rich that the EPL has reverted to a sporting contest.  When EVERYONE has hundreds of millions of pounds then the law of diminishing returns means that every additional £100m Man City/Utd/Chelsea get doesn't propel them out of sight as it would in any other league.

That's a point I've been trying to make.

There's so much money in English football, that it's reached some sort of saturation point.

The only real difference is in strength in depth at the biggest richest sides.

La liga (barca and Real madrid excepted) should take note, and a couple of other leagues !. The EPL is quite socialist for a capitalist endeavour !!

I would agree but its how you spend the money that matters. I mean I look at that Man U side and how and where did £250m get spent on that !!

Spurs net spend over the past 4 seasons is positive. I get that they had the bale money and wasted about 50% of it but its still quite impressive with what they are doing with young british players and a mix of foreigners.

And for the record i expect us to finish 5th ;-)

The SPFL is the one that should be taking note.  I don't see how it benefits anybody - Celtic included - if one team has ten times the resources of all the rest.  We have famous and historic clubs with their tentacles deep into Scottish society - it could be a great "product" to punt round the world if only it wasn't a one-horse race.

You can't tell me that Aberdeen v Hearts, Hibs v Celtic or Dundee Utd v Rangers would be any less alluring to your average Euroconsumer than Wigan v Burnley, Hull v Reading or Bournemouth v Crystal Palace.

I blame Doncaster.

Just following on from the point above.

I've listened with interest as the English media try and excuse the Champions league failures of English sides on too much competition in the EPL after years of the Old firm and Scottish media blaming their failings on lack of competition in Scotland (despite often weakening their opponents at every turn).
