thplinth
Huge voice and catchy tunes (just) but one of the most wooden, least charismatic performers you can find. Worked massively hard at making himself saleable and he cracked it. Jewish Elvis. Watched a film on him recently and was amazed to learn his Cherry Cherry hit was actually originally Money, Money until someone suggested that singing about love was much more marketable than about money. "In an interview with Melody Maker, Jeff Barry said that this song was originally "Money, Money," but that he and Bang records owner Bert Berns convinced Diamond to make it lighter and more teen-friendly." irnbruman
Have to agree with you thplinth. Although my version of Sweet Caroline (assisted by about ten backing singers) in karaoke bar in Krokow old town square was anything but wooden. Shyte but not wooden. Tartan Eagle
......was amazed to learn his Cherry Cherry hit was actually originally Money, Money until someone suggested that singing about love was much more marketable than about money. I watched a TV doc many years ago about Robert Palmer. Like so many he experienced dark times some of which he wrote about. Addicted to Love was written as Addicted to Drugs. As with Cherry Cherry his label/management company sold him the title change (and the substitution of a single word in the lyrics) on the basis of its likely commercial impact. Messing with the integrity of recording artists? I wonder how many other classics found their way to market in a similar way.
