  1. I know it wasn't made in 2015, but just finished watching The Greatest Game Ever Played (for the second time), about the 1913 US Open. If you haven't seen it it's well worth a watch and, imo, one of the best sports movies out there. Don't let the fact that Shia LeBoeuf is in it put you off.
  2. The Barras is fantastic. Saw Steve Earle there in 1990 and it was the best gig I've ever been to. The crowd kept singing Here We Go and twice he had to stop the show because the crowd singing was so loud. There was also a point where they were singing Get Yer Tits Out to his sister. The next best venue was ... The Venue in Edinburgh, and Earle was again the best of the shows I saw there, this time in 1987. So many people packed in that I watched part of the show standing at an angle, held up by other bodies.
  3. They could have asked who recorded Fire? Now that's difficult ;-)
  4. 17/20 Springsteen. But John Hammond didn't sign him, it was Clive Davis. And it's debateable whether Elvis inspired his music career - it made him pick up a guitar, but he put it down for another seven years afterwards.
  5. At the time ITV showed a US General? who said the kill was made when the US believed there would be "minimal civilian casualties" (or something along those lines). How very BBC-esque! 1? 2? 10? 50? 100? More?
  6. There's lots of them. Japanese, Canadian, German, French and a few more. Dillinger might be interested in NovelRank which tells you how many sales you have on each. Unfortunately only from the minute you sign up.
  7. The Australian uncle deserved more screen time. "Dr Lawn####er or something!"
  8. Remember a story from a few years back when he was at a football match and a fan, thinking Mitchell was a racist, shouted something racist to him expecting some supportive words in reply. Mitchell proceeded to tear him a new one in front of the crowd.
  9. Not sure why you think I'm objecting to anything, I'm not. It's you who seems to be doing all the objecting, but hey ho. Simply giving my opinion on a subject I know a little, and not a lot, about. It's a football message board - I'm not publishing an academic paper - so therefore I'm not particularly interested in reading ten books before I post.
  10. I think the central word there is 'threat'. Russia wanted to avoid another war as much as the rest of the Allies. And they weren't averse to backing down, as JFK would later prove. Churchill and Eisenhower backed down. Why? Perhaps to avoid war. Perhaps because Poles were Eastern Europeans and not considered too important. Perhaps a bit of both. Just making a point about those objecting - it's a fair point to make on the back of Churchill's treatment. I'll give you the stunning tangent lol.
  11. And between those two events the Poles laid down tens of thousands of lives for the Allies. This included playing a key role in the Battle of Britain, closing the Falaise Gap, and taking part in the hell on earth that was Monte Cassino. As well as being stabbed in the back by Churchill there was also a huge opposition to them even being allowed to stay here by many MPs and the trade unions (who couldn't seem to fathom that they would be filling the jobs of Britain's dead, not taking British jobs). For many years afterwards there was negativity in some quarters for the Poles driven by the media. Much like today's reporting on the Syrian refugees some might say.
  12. My grandad was one of the Poles who stayed. His story is incredible, and most of them have similar amazing stories. I'll maybe post a bit more tomorrow. The Polish General Maczek was the last of the major commanders, dying in Edinburgh when was 103 years old. The treatment at the remembrance service in 1946, to appease Russia, was a disgrace (until she lost her lucidity my gran absolutely hated Churchill), especially so given the important role they played in the Battle of Britain which is often glossed over. I also have one of the best collections of Polish photographs in the country, and they've been used in several books. Will try and post a few. The book about Wojtek is a decent read. Sure the author was an adviser to Alex Salmond. Unfortunately there aren't any books about journeys west, but there are some really good ones about those who 'escaped' east - The Long Walk, and Shallow Graves in Siberia being two I can remember.
  13. Exactly. I've really tried, I love the smell, but the closest I can come to finding one I like is Chocca Mocca. I know, I'm a Philistine. I watched a programme about that wee coffee bean-shitting mammal. Think they said the coffee was about £800 a cup. They sell it to private jets and the like.
  14. Probably lol. Agree with the earlier point about re-boiling water. Definite no no.
  15. I'm a complete tea snob Love the stuff, but don't drink more than a couple of cups a day - I'm getting old and too much caffeine gives me jumpy legs. Bloke has some things wrong, or at least fails to mention them: Don't put it in a black cup - not sure why but I don't like it. Cup should be white, or at the least light coloured. Don't buy any old p!sh tea bags. Get mine delivered by Ringtons. Open out a Rington teabag and common garden teabag and you'll see the difference. Everyone I give a cup to can taste the difference. And they're not that much more expensive. If you need your cuppa quickly pour the water from a height, it cools significantly from spout to cup I'm sure I once had a life.
  16. Yes, first two episodes are great. Given how good the last series was I don't expect the quality will drop. Edit: meant to copy a post re Fargo
  17. My neice is seemingly on tonight. Don't know what she asked, or whether it will be edited out. But she's a professional cellist so if she batters that absolute bellend Scott Arthur over the napper with her cello she'll be getting her Christmas card this year. Billy Bragg is a good guy. Took a lot of flak from down south for his views on independence.
  18. Laddie, maybe 20 years old, with a brother at the school, was interviewed and seemed pretty sensible. Said he had gone to school and it was always a pretty good place but that it had "all started kicking off in the last couple of years".
  19. 'Great leader' to describe Alex Salmond 'Once in a generation'
  20. Have always wanted to do that. Interviewers who introduce trick questions are clueless. Interviews are for getting the most out of people - not seeing who copes best with unanswerable questions. One said to me - you have a phone book, a pen, and a phone - how do you contact a customer? Me: Look them up in the phone book, write down the number and call them. Still don't know what he expected.
  21. My former boss was, well, a w@nk. No social skills (at all), and promoted way, way above his skill level (talked a good game). He used to invent a phrase on almost a weekly basis (he considered himself an intellectual). So, someone dirties the public toilet. Someone's shat aw oo'er the bog = biological vandalism We had a map room on the top floor. It's a room for storing maps = geographically-focussed research room
  22. My first thought was if Jason Robards was in this then I've seen it, so just checked and he was. Always remember the cars stopping just before the blast hit them. Scary stuff at the time. Was watching a TV show last night and they showed clips from Threads in it. Again, incredibly scary for a young teen.
