exile
This came up in the referendum campaign as a possible threat to NHS. Can we trust the politicians to protect us from this 'assault on democracy'? What is TTIP? And six reasons why the answer should scare you http://www.independent.co.uk/voices/comment/what-is-ttip-and-six-reasons-why-the-answer-should-scare-you-9779688.html Don't believe the scaremongering myths - TTIP is nothing to be afraid of http://www.independent.co.uk/voices/comment/dont-believe-the-scaremongering-myths--ttip-is-nothing-to-be-afraid-of-9868416.html Edited November 22, 2014 by exile
phart
Alexandra Renison worked for former UKIP leader Baron Pearson, when she was research director of business for Britain. in fact she says "The Institute of Directors has just released a survey of its members showing that business leaders overwhelmingly back the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership. Nine out of ten IoD members want to see a deal which tackles both tariff barriers and regulatory challenges to doing business with – and in - the United States." She is the Head of Europe and Trade Policy at the Institute of Directors, so she is citing her own research as proof of something. The news is full of people with non-stated conflict of interests giving "advice". Well it says at the bottom but she can't cite her own sources. As you say she is representing IoD (though the column label is called 'independent voice') Talking of UKIP, I wonder what UKIP think about this - are they on the side of big business and EU deals, or democracy? phart
Ttip is for big business to get it's claws into more markets. So depending on who is funding UKIP they will take a stance commensurate with that.

phart
MPs yesterday voted in favour of keeping the NHS out of any potential TTIP negotiations. yeah the problem is http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Investor-state_dispute_settlement(Investor-State Dispute Settlement clause) In which it's being claimed that companies can sue governments for loss of profits , perhaps (who can say in law) for them missing out on bidding for nhs processes. More here explaining it in the context of environmental laws: http://www.ecologic.eu/sites/files/publication/2014/investor-state-dispute-settlement-under-ttip-hbs.pdf I might know more if i wasn't engaged in tuck-shop economic discussions on supply and demand Edited November 22, 2014 by phart
phart
Here's an example i managed to find from information in the comments on what happened to Ecuador when they "breached" an investor agreement. http://kluwerarbitrationblog.com/blog/2012/12/19/icsids-largest-award-in-history-an-overview-of-occidental-petroleum-corporation-v-the-republic-of-ecuador/
