School League Tables

Recommended Posts

It's that time of year where parents and estate agents get excited.  Look at the differences of schools close to each other.  A council region and parents ability to buy a house makes a HUGE difference.  And it's not including private schools.

Jordanhill 1 v 233 Cleveden

Williamwood 8 v 298 Hillpark

Bearsden 5 v 326 Drumchapel

League

1. Jordanhill

2. Mearns Castle

3. Dunblane

4. St Ninians Giffnock

5. Bearsden........

.........331. Levenmouth

332. Glenwood Fife

333. Inverness High

334. Newbattle Midlothian

335. Lochend Glasgow

Of course this doesn't necessarily equate to the schools themselves being good as it only deals with the rates of exam passes that the pupils who attend those schools achieve.

A lot of this can be explained by inequality.

Put bluntly, children from more affluent households will tend to have better support structures and opportunities than those who come from deprived households.

It would be interesting to see what these league tables looked like if they were weighted so that the actual achievement of the school, it's teachers and pupils were balanced off against the challenges they face.

Maybe then you'd actually see which schools were "good".

Postcode lottery @aaid I'd say a good school is the one that gets you grades to progress. The obsession with uni and its free places for middle classes keeps people in "their place". No grades. No uni. Less chance in job market.
