Dvla In Independent Scotland

Recommended Posts

Need assistance, my sister is 90% yes. She has just txted me to say the only thing stopping her voting yes is the threat to her husbands job. A DVLA driving instructor. Obviously I have told her that it ludicrous to suggest we would get rid of driving instructors but would like a point of reference to refer her to and secure this vote. Anyone assist??

How else will people take their tests in an Independent Scotland?

He will just work for the Scottish DVLA (The Scottish Motor Services Agency).

And I wouldn't worry about the streamlining thing as people will always need to take driving tests.

Hope the below helps.

From the White Paper.

Other transport functions are currently reserved to the Westminster Government, and delivered by 13 UK- or GB- wide specialist transport organisations. For a period after independence, the Scottish Government proposes that these organisations continue to provide their services in Scotland under arrangements with the Scottish Government. These arrangements, some of which will be transitional, will form part of agreements reached with Westminster.

The people of Scotland have contributed to the funding and development of these institutions over many years, and continued use of these institutions, for varying periods of

time, following independence with appropriate financial contributions to their administration, along with an equally appropriate say in their governance is the sensible approach to ensuring continuity of service immediately following independence.

These include the Motoring Services agencies: the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency, Driving Standards Agency, Vehicle and Operator Standards Agency, and the Vehicle Certification Agency. These will initially continue to provide vehicle and driver licensing and testing services to the people of Scotland. However, independence will allow a Scottish parliament to determine the best way to deliver these services in the future.

The Scottish Government plans to create a new, streamlined Scottish Motor Services Agency, which will bring together the functions of DVLA, DSA, VOSA, and VCA. By the end of the first term of an independent parliament, we will have completed the design and development work, with a view to the Agency going live early in the second Parliament.

Thanks for the helpful inputs. I know that it's a nonsense and have stated that it is ridiculous to suggest it would threaten his job but a statement from the white paper would help elevate fear. So thanks for the smart arse comments. I'll pass on the white paper stuff cheers

Let us know how you get on, for my tuppence worth the key message is that the things we do now, will continue to have to be done in an Independent Scotland. If you are a bin man, why wouldnt youi collect the bins? If you are a teacher, why would you not continue to educate? If you are a Nurse, why would you not continue to help people?

Similarly if you assess peoples competence to drive on our roads, why wouldnt you do that in the future?

Totally agree and it's the same kinda argument I've used. She is concern about the proposed streamlining under proposed Scottish motors authority, I've argued that the austerity cuts specifically targeting public sector is more of a risk to his job than an independent Scotland looking to grow it's population this in theory creating more work.

Think it has worked but she is a worrier. Hope over fear is the message. Thanks for your assistance mate

Don't suppose anybody has got any info regarding Private Number Plates?

My plate is technically worth more than my car.

I never really thought to ask about this before?

Haven't really got an answer, however putting my pragmatic hat on what I could see would be the Scottish DVLA honouring previous plates, then putting the rest up for auction.

There will be a mad dash to get Scottish plate A1.

Also streamlining in my experience generally refers to back office support staff. As I said earlier, you will always need somebody to sit in a car and assess a learner driver, whether in the UK or IScotland.

You also make a good point regarding cuts in the UK Public services.

All the best.
