exile
I just realised that anyone can turn up at a Mountain Bothies Association bothy, no need to be a member, book, or pay... http://www.mountainbothies.org.uk/ Anyone have good or bad experiences, or tips for bothies? Armchair Bob
The main tip with bothies is to plan for them being full, locked, or burned down. This usually means taking a tent just in case. I used to do a *lot* of bothying until about ten years ago. But two of the last three bothies I've been to in the last few years were no longer available due to fire / being locked! In the first instance I walked out to the road and went to a different bothy. In the second instance, I froze my nuts off sleeping on the ground. I personally never take a tent to a bothy, I take 10kg of coal, firelighters, candles, and whisky instead. You cannae whack a good bothy fire, a bottle of whisky and a pal with a penny whistle or fiddle, if you ask me.
Armchair Bob
Plus there are a few that are always busy. Think of any near popular Munros and those are your busy ones. There are also ones where you will likely meet nobody. And not all bothies are MBA. There's some good ones near Fort William run by a different group. And of course, there's always the Secret Bothy, the whereabouts I've never discovered but would love to know...

Deedee
There`s a good one at Beinn Dearg near Blair Atholl. Never stayed in it but stopped in on the way down off the hill last year. Long walk there, much easier by bike.

malky24
Used them many a time, back in the day. Suggest you join the MBA ( by now I'm sure they'll have a website). they'll give you. List of current bothies and their location. we had some great nights in them in Knoydart and other locations, but would always carry a tent as back up. exile
Thanks for these replies. Yes the MBA has a website. I was just curious about actual experience of using them. Carrying a tent as a backup sounds like good advice. Well especially in territory with no roads or other accommodation, like Knoydart, or Wester Ross etc
