I enjoyed last night even though it ended up being a bit of a struggle. The atmosphere was decent despite the notable absentees and definitely helped by a sizeable away support and a competitive game. Positives were Holm looks a very good player and if Yang can sharpen up his end product he’s definitely got the makings of a major asset, especially in games like that. On the flip side Forrest is done and should not be featuring ahead of any of the other options even Vata. Philips is a fuckin cart horse and one of those EPL myths. How he’s managed to hang about Anfield as long is a mystery to me. Brendan needs to rotate a bit more and I thought that on Saturday as well. Some tired legs in both starting line ups against Saints and Hibs. If St Mirren can avoid major injury problems they’ll have a shot at 3rd but I don’t think they’ll get it, more likely 4th or 5th I think.

Labours pathological hatred of the SNP was their undoing and it’s sad to see the same SNP fall into the same trap with Alba. I well remember standing on the steps of Buchanan galleries chatting to the Labour For Indy guys campaigning ahead of the first referendum. When Joanne Lamont and a group of other Labour activists came along the venom that was spat in their direction was quite something to see. Most of these guys will have joined the SNP in the aftermath but I wonder how many remain. Everything is torn asunder now and there will be no indyref2 until all the stakeholders in favour of independence realise they have to come together. Sadly it’s probably going to take an absolute hosing in the polls for any of them to realise that and by then it’ll be too late. The next Tory or even Labour government will likely legislate to dilute power even further and take independence even further away. Depressing!

Obviously our second string were never going to trouble a team like the French but all in all I think it was a worthwhile exercise tonight. The only thing that really irritated me was the poverty of our set pieces. Against a top tier side that needs to be on the money. As others have mentioned though, one or two we wanted a look at emerged with some credit. Its still up for debate just how close we can get to these top sides I think, tonight didn’t really tell us anything in that respect. I’ll definitely be hoping we avoid England and France in the draw but any of the rest I’d be reasonably hopeful we can cause problems for.
