Clyde1998
Anti-biotics were prescribed for everything - even when other drugs would've been more effective - and bugs have become immune to it.
Orraloon
One of the big problems with this is that, at present, there isn't a big enough incentive for the Pharma companies to make major investment in this area. Work is going on but it's not one of their major priorities. Because of the problem of bacterial resistance, almost by definition, any new antibiotic will be used sparingly and only used as a last resort when current antibiotics don't work. So, at least in the short to medium term the market for a new antibiotic will be limited. It's probably going to need some up front incentive from governments to get some real movement on this. The first thing that needs to be done though is to tackle the over-prescribing of antibiotics. It a huge issue that isn't being tackled properly yet. Cockroaches could be part of the answer. http://www.utne.com/science-and-technology/the-healing-power-of-cockroaches.aspx
