Over-emphasis on the Champions League with an attempt to compensate by diluting all excitement out of the other tournament. Back in the 80s you had 32 teams in the European Cup and CWC. 64 teams in the UEFA Cup. Win a couple of games and you had a chance of getting a sniff of a trophy. Now there are over 250 teams competing in just 2 tournaments. Last year Seville had to play 19 games to win the Europa League!

An interesting point too. I've heard it stated the Beatles actually destroyed some popular musical genres in their early days by turning so many youngsters on to one type of music. On the other hand the Beatles went on to help create numerous strands of pop music that have continued through the decades...
