  1. Some interesting words from Liam Lindsay: Liam Lindsay hopes his switch to Barnsley can boost his prospects of a Scotland call-up. He was the only non-Celtic or Aberdeen player in last season's SPL team. He said: "That's partly why I moved down. I wasn't getting a sniff up there. I thought I'd come to England, a better league, better players so if I'm performing here then hopefully I'll get a call up." Both John Stones and Alfie Mawson came through Barnsley's ranks.
  2. He wasn't Anti-Scottish. Italy had a good goal disallowed in the first half. And Ferguson was ahead of the Italian defenders when the shot went in. Both were linesman errors of course but you could argue before the Hutton incident the decisions hurt Italy more than Scotland. It was petering out to 1-1 anyway. A draw wouldn't have been enough would it? Trying to remember what France had to do.
  3. Agreed. Doubt Paul Clement will last much longer at Swansea and Pulis could well be sacked by WBA soon so there's two decent premier league jobs right there.
  4. 17th November 2007, Hampden Park, Scotland 1 Italy 2. Remains the nearest Scotland have been to reaching a major tournament in over a decade. A reminder, a win and Scotland would've gone to euro 2008, no play offs in that qualifying section. Scotland: Gordon, Hutton, Weir, McManus, Naysmith, Brown (Miller 74), Fletcher, Hartley, Ferguson, McCulloch (Boyd 90), McFadden. Subs Not Used: McGregor, Alexander, Caldwell, Pearson, Robson. Booked: Naysmith, McCulloch. Goal: Ferguson 65. Italy: Buffon, Panucci, Cannavaro, Barzagli, Zambrotta, Camoranesi (Chiellini 83), Gattuso (De Rossi 87), Pirlo, Ambrosini, Di Natale (Iaquinta 68), Toni. Subs Not Used: Amelia, Oddo, Perrotta, Gilardino. Booked: Toni. Goals: Toni 2, Panucci 90. Att: 51,301 Ref: Manuel Enrique Mejuto Gonzalez (Spain) Looking at that I was always under the impression Kenny Miller had started. Probably confusing it with the 2005 game when he ran off Cannavaro and scored with a near post header. He was pretty good as a lone striker that campaign so error from McLeish to go with McFadden as lone striker that day particularly as he only became influential when he dropped deeper later on in the game. Everyone of course still remembers when he hit the side netting at 1-1. Of course some odd reffing that day. The winning goal and ridiculous free kick award everyone remembers, less so Barry Ferguson was a yard offside for the equaliser... Was a really good mix in that team and nice balance particularly in midfield. Hartley did a good job holding and McCulloch chipped in with some important goals in that period. Really emphasizes to me the 2010 and 2012 campaigns were squandered through poor managerial appointments as most of the squad were available for those campaigns.
  5. How many of the under 21s played in the Brazil match in the Toulon tournament? Greg Taylor will have a good career I reckon, impressed me in the summer. YET another left back though!
  6. His last two finishes in group qualfying have been 1st and 2nd. Reminder 2nd place will be good enough for euro 2020. No play offs. Really don't see the argument, if he wants the job give it to him. Let's remember Scotland finished this group with four clean sheets out of six, Berra and Mulgrew did the best they could with the ability they have. Would probably help next campaign if the chosen keeper actually decides to come from a cross or two, that might stop a few more goals.
  7. Dickov's been terrible at club level, been sacked by Oldham and I think Doncaster.
  8. Think Blackpool played him as a striker a few times. West Brom may have when they had an injury crisis.
  9. Very bizarre for a friendly. I could understand it if it was for Spain/germany away.
  10. He really isn't that good and certainly not the best Scottish player in the final third at Forest.
  11. I know Steve Clarke has only just joined Killie (and has already picked up some impressive results) but he strikes me as one of the better candidates on the home front. Been number 2 to some excellent managers, worked with many top level players and can defensively organise a team. Like many his record is hit and miss in England but he did get WBA finishing in the top 10 in his own full season in the premier league so he's hardly some disaster manager. Strikes me the sort who'd do well at international level where you have to get lesser teams organised.
  12. Said it at the time half jokingly but Dick Advocaat has managed a shed load of international teams so he would actually be a serious contender if/when he leaves Holland (I presume he's still in charge).
  13. Bizzare that Cummings is the only out and out striker in this squad.
  14. Cairney isn't fit enough for this.
  15. Interested who the CM is called up to replace Fletch. There's plenty of in form ones around playing in Sheffield for a start...
  16. It shouldn't be just about that imo. How about some personal pride. How about a Scottish manager out there sick to death with Scotland failing time and again and he wants to be the manager to end the hex and make an international tournament again. He'd probably get a statue put up of him outside Hampden such would be the relief and joy when it happens. It could also help his job prospects back in club football. I look at the other home nations. Ten years ago Norn Iron went on a mad run under Lawrie Sanchez. He'd previously managed Wycombe in club football. Fulham offered him a premier league job. Chris Coleman's previous jobs before taking on Wales were Coventry (sacked) and Larissa. If he dosen't stay on with Wales he'll probably be a premier league manager next season, same for Michael O'Neill. Worry is I thought Strachan would achieve all this and he fell short (pardon the pun). I suppose with all that criteria Billy Davies qualifies as a decent option (had success at club career but lost his way). Shame he's massively paranoid and picks stupid fights with the people who employ him. Lambert is increasingly looking another option I suspect. Managers need to be smart about this. You're taking over a team with some good players in the 23-37 age range and euros is much easier to qualify for than the world cup. Do well and better club sides will come calling than just taking another championship job you'd get sacked from after six months.
  17. Would imagine he'll get a loan move to a relegation threatened side in January. Didn't West Ham want him a while ago?
  18. Rested as 3 games in 6 days too much for someone on the way back from injury. I get the feeling that was why he was left out of the squad. Would be amazed if he's not in there for the March games.
  19. Barry Douglas having a cracking game for Wolves. Shame he's left footed and well down the pecking order but he's had a very interesting career, played in Poland and Turkey. Maybe he could be an option for left wing. Plays wing back for Wolves.
  20. Joe Jordan has been number 2 to Harry Redknapp at all the clubs he's managed last 10 years.
  21. Shame Bryan is a left back. Right back and he'd be in the squad I reckon. Same as Barry Douglas, played a decent amount of games for Wolves this season but again left back so well stocked in this position.
  22. Probably the case. He's actually getting more minutes in last month than some of the midfielders called up.
  23. If true they really should be courted. Saw a lot of Paterson when he was coming up at Walsall and he was excellent then and is now a key player at championship level. I know a few on here are sniffy about calling up too many championship players but Paterson, Bryan, Coutts, Fleck etc could all be premier league players in 12 months time so I'd rather call them up early and get them involved like Wales and Northern Ireland do.
  24. Wierd selection particularly in midfield. Also according to Wiki Ryan Christie is classed as a striker in this squad?! I thought he was a right sided midfielder? If you're calling up Jason Cummings then McKay should've got a call up aswell, really don't understand it. Have no issue with Shinnie being again as he's been consistant last few years and deserved call ups before but why ignore Cairney or the Sheffield United players. Really hope McKay dosen't get this gig full time.
