  1. Project Manager on the business side in the Oil & Gas industry. I haven't been on here for years, but I actually find it a good and normally reliable place for discussion in times of crisis like this.
  2. The UK strategy so far is only to test those who have been admitted to hospital, so effectively the data only tells us the death rate for those who have had symptoms serious enough to be admitted into hospital. Possibly a good benchmark for the actual death rate in Europe is Germany, as they are testing more than any other country in Europe, and their death rate is about 0.2 to 0.3%. However, they have 25,000 ventilators in Germany (population: 84M), as opposed to 5,900 in the UK, (population: 64M) so they are able to provide better and more widespread treatment. The underfunding of the NHS is about to be seriously exposed! It's an evolving situation though, every day brings new data and knowledge on the behaviour of the virus. There are also a lot of social circumstances to consider. In parts of Italy for example, it's normal for 2 or 3 generations of a family to be staying in the same house, so greater exposure to the elderly.
  3. My own gut feel is that a few things will change in the world as a result of this, but 2 of the major changes will be; 1. Freedom of movement will be restricted and borders will be reinstated 2. The west will start to 'question' China
  4. The mortality rate in Italy is now more than 8% 😨
  5. As far as I know this is a hoax, however, it is known that ibuprofen can make respiratory conditions worse. Current advice is if you are taking ibuprofen for an existing condition, contact your GP. If you are experiencing symptoms of COVID-19, take paracetamol (NOT ibuprofen) to reduce your temperature and drink plenty of water. For the record, the French authorities are advising against taking ibuprofen, which is in line with my point in a previous post about UK sending out different messages to the rest of Europe! https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/mar/14/anti-inflammatory-drugs-may-aggravate-coronavirus-infection
  6. Also, below is a link to the report published by 'the experts' which sent the UK government into panic mode on Monday; https://www.imperial.ac.uk/media/imperial-college/medicine/sph/ide/gida-fellowships/Imperial-College-COVID19-NPI-modelling-16-03-2020.pdf
  7. The truth is that we are only testing those who have been admitted into hospital, so in actual fact we have no clue what the actual numbers are, trends etc. Also, people in their 30s & 40s in France & Italy with no pathological history are seriously ill are requiring intensive care. Mainland Europe have realised already that this is 'not just the flu' and have put more drastic measures in place. Our government have adopted a 'we know best' attitude based upon advice from medical experts in the UK which are contradicting those produced in mainland Europe. We are an island, we had the chance to isolate sooner and protect ourselves (border controls, quarantine etc.), but we didn't and I fear this will turn out to be a huge mistake.

  9. In Rainbows is one of the best albums ever made, in my opinion. Really looking forward to giving the new one a proper listen. From what I've heard from it on Radio 6, it sounds great.
  10. There are 2 bottles thrown in that video clip. One bottle of beer from the opposite side of the road at the bus. One bottle of buckfast thrown out of the bus driver's window on this side, by one of the passengers by the look of it.

  14. I seem to remember you posting a while back (possibly even over a year ago) about Syria and the connection to the war in Ukraine, with the low oil price to cripple the Russian economy etc. A very, very interesting read. Any further info on this?
  15. The Beta Band. Although they were a bit of a cult band, they should have been huge. Saw them live about 6 or 7 times and they were consistently brilliant. One gig at the Barras is without a doubt in my top 3.
  16. Up! is a brilliant film. the new one, inside out, is also great. If you want a good greet at an animation, watch Grave of the Fireflies. My kids wouldn't talk to me for about 2 days after watching it - oops!
  17. I love slow building, mysterious films that study different characters in detail. Paris, Texas left me totally gobsmacked, but my wife hated it, so it's a bit marmite. Here's another few to add to the list; There will be blood Lost in translation The rules of the game (La règle du jeu) M Spirited Away Boyhood The Pianist Rosemary's Baby The lives of others Once upon a time in the west Godfather & Godfather II It's a wonderful life The Shining American Beauty The Dollar trilogy No country for old men Stagecoach The list goes on and on, too many great films to mention
  18. Cool hand Luke The last picture show Paris, Texas Ferris Bueller's day off Pulp Fiction Rear window 2001:A space odyssey 12 Angry Men The 400 Blows Wild Strawberries
