  1. https://the-past.com/review/books/david-stirling-the-phoney-major-the-life-times-and-truth-about-the-founder-of-the-sas/ tbh cant recall if ths book from podcast i mentioned - but first hit on search came up with this
  2. sounds a bit of debate over DS - that he created the legend himself in his book in the 70s ; his brother and more importantly Paddy Mayne were more deserving of credit , and Sterlings perfomance during early raids were not comparable - this was only from a history podcast about a book on this subject - unless the author was making it all up ? ive only seen the preview of the show - first thing that put me off , was the boy band haircuts and designer sunglasses - any photos ive seen of LRDG etc , all fully bearded and sunglasses usually sealed at side (sandstorms ?)
  3. I was at Cove v ICT a few weeks back ; pretty sterile experience aside from the atmosphere generated by noisy band of ICT fans - quite busy , but i always got the impression that for a lot of people attending it was their 2nd team , so not same passion or interest for many - not sure how it will come over on tv.... dont imagine many fans up from QP on a friday night for a televised game...
  4. As much as i ( have always ) hated the old firm ; this is more about a contempt for stats so we can sum it up as celtic were shite rangers were really shite
  5. Thanks for that input i dont think anyones got a scooby over here thats going on - if so am sure would of influenced choice
  6. just reading back your earlier post ; along lines of stats show that celtic were competitive ..... is that not a contradiction then ? the record will show at end of group stages celtic 2 pts - rangers 0 pts
  7. wind your neck in pal - you dont get points /goals/ plaudits for being at the races .... goalscoring/finishing is such a vital element of the game as is defending - we had a lot of the ball v Czechs in last euros , but they could finish, we could not - in years time only the score will tell the story i was at the Dutch game , and had also thought of that as an example of where we stole the game ; similar to games against French just after that
  8. for some reason we got sucked into the whole north american stats thing starting in mid 80s - although back then it was corners etc - it really bores the arse off me ; assists etc = i can see how its relevant in NFL and rugby as yardage and possession typically translate into points football is all about finishing ; who cares if you hit the bar three times , it really means nothing if you lose 1-0 to a team who score their only chance of the game
  9. mate of mine in Calgary is looking for advice on digs in Glasgow - Jan 2022 ; as kid is going there for University for "semester" (dont know which Uni yet) am being asked - but tbh i only ever visited for football , and odd weekend trip ; some 20 years since ..... is there any defined "studenty" areas ? does anyone know = any resources i can point him to .... am assuming most rentals are sept-may/june which could be an issue thanks in advance for any input
  10. its period this side of the pond ; i believe it's no longer a taboo subject ....
  11. It’s actually a bylaw here in Calgary - i have a bell on all my bikes ; even the road one its super organized in huge network of paths with line down middle ; people typically stay on side , but theres always incidents
  12. i can trace the coffee fad back to mid / late 90s in London anyway - am sure it was just after seeing (mostly) young woman carrying around bottles of evian on the tube (before the yoga flask era...) - unfortunately i got sucked into the coffee thing - and is probably way worse in north america - although they do go in a lot for the cheap "brewed" coffee too ( for some reason instant coffee is frowned upon - although it is typically way better than the brewed p1sh ) = i watched a video a few years back ; where bloke was talking about huge number of pub closures in UK ; numbers he gave were roughly one pub closed = one coffee shop opened (this was in early 2000s i think ?) he did suggest that in 80s ; a popular tv show was "cheers" set in a bar / and 90s show was friends (which incidentally i cannot stand - but thats another rant on the vapid) set in a coffee shop (so i understand) am not sure i could sit in a coffee shop for 3hrs though discussing the recent match though ......
  13. my issue with it ; from day one , its the ref himself that has to run over to a portable tv with everyone watching and second guess his own call he just made ..... and the ramifications (intense pressure)of that = as opposed to independent "panel" or whatever off screen , like TMO ? in rugby union , and in most other sports (was NHL hockey on pub last night - and goal was chopped off for offside/blue line infringement )
  14. thanks for that - i had to google that to find out there was 1979 tv movie - i had no idea i saw the 1930 version / vague memories in early 70s watching with my dad - the bit that stuck out was the pointed helmets - years later when i saw it as an adult the memory clicked ...... on a studio tour to Universal in 90s am pretty sure they said some of it was filmed there on lot ; near the cowboy towns ive also just looked at those other titles you mentioned ; its a favourite subject of mine , but honestly i had no idea of these films existing ; imagine as foreign language films classed as bit more 'niche' obviously the kirk douglas / paths of glory is very well known ; but more of a court room drama ? ive always been hugely let down by the films made on WW! trench life as a lot of them (english speaking ones) seem very poor ; the trench , passchendaele to name just two
  15. just saw "all quiet on the western front" remake ; normally i dont get the point of remaking classic films , but in this instance went to see it as a full colour remake in german subtitles ; with "modern"(saving private ryan like) gore and realism = a few scenes had predictable outcomes - ie saw them coming - but overall very much enjoyed it - it made 1917 look like a disney film in comparison would def rate in my top 3 of ww1/western front films - beneath hill 60 & birdsong (bbc mini series) being other 2
  16. I just thought of that after posting tbh our costs as kids were typically a neep - usually a cows turnip so free ; a made up costume - okay crap by todays standards - the penny for the guy was supposed to fund the box of standard fireworks - sounds almost dickensian now way worse in north america where entire year revolves around a “hallmark” calendar - only need to look at their hijacking of st patricks day for evidence of that ( after valentines day stuff cleared ) am just waiting for the revisionist historians to call for the end of thanksgiving ( biggest hol in US seemingly as non denominational ) but does have darker origins - biting the hand that feeds you …
  17. Likely a bit off topic ; but lot in the news about cost of living crisis etc am convinced people will still be browbeat into ploughing thousands into worthless tat in the month of december ; when lot of it is not needed ; not wanted - and thats just the packaging
  18. I believe this was the time it all started to go pete tong in scottish football ; start of the big money signings by souness at rangers ; took a few seasons to get it bang on , but then started dominating , until celtic caught up I remember they spent 1 million on paul rideout to cover hatelys 6 week injury ; in the same league as airdrie etc
  19. watch the highlights away to Poland game 2-2 ; he is pretty dodgy in that one
