  1. That still doesn’t clear up what you meant in your original post?! Did you mean to say we would qualify instead of we should qualify? Or, did you just get your numbers rather wrong?
  2. There’s a surprise. 🙄 Surely it wouldn’t be difficult to say, ‘Sorry, I got it wrong, it should have been ‘they’re’, not ‘their’ and sorry for accusing you of being wrong as well.’ Regardless of who pointed out the mistake.
  3. I was talking about after that one League Cup match against Liverpool and the match that followed. Some of the jumps that people were making in his career from there were frightening.
  4. ‘…. all of whom have shown their (sic) capable at international level in a back three.’ Everyone loves it when I show them my capable. Apology very much necessary.
  5. Really? They wanted to sign him?
  6. Were there teams from abroad looking to sign him? I can’t imagine there would be any offers from clubs who could come close to the wages that Watford are paying him.
  7. 1996 was far more the pinnacle, I would have said? We performed really well at Euro ‘96, in a tougher group than we had at the World Cup in 1998.
  8. I remember some of the ridiculous hype on here after he had made his first start or two for Chelsea, about what both Billy Gilmour and Scotland were about to go on to achieve. That thread should be held up and quoted as an example to people about getting carried away with hype and expectations. What I notice on here is that when it comes to young Scottish players, some of our fans seem to only ever envisage this incredible upward trajectory for these players’ careers, not realising that there are all kinds of factors that need to fall into place, for a player to have a successful career and players’ careers can fluctuate and fail to reach their potential for any number of reasons. Barring Callum McGregor, Andy Robertson and a couple of other more senior players in the squad, whose careers have settled at a consistent level, nobody can confidently predict how the rest of our players’ careers will pan out and what level they will end up playing at. Particularly given that a majority of our players play for clubs outside the ‘big six’ in England and can therefore very quickly find themselves powerless to going from playing in the lower half of the English Premiership, to playing in the lower half of the English Championship, through no major fault of their own.
  9. Andy Robertson moved to Hull when he was 20.
  10. What do you mean ‘it took until 1983 for them to match us’? Also, you can’t be serious in saying this is the best squad and team with the best coach in your life? If you are, then that is recency bias at its finest.
  11. Wow, what a tune! Thanks.
  12. Not that it makes any significant difference to the discussion, but I make it that Gallagher played only nine seasons in the English Premier League. (Also three seasons in the top division when it was known as the First Division.) His career was disrupted by several serious injuries in his prime too, which should be taken into account when making any assessments of what he achieved in the game.
  13. Wow, I didn’t realise that Che Adams had been playing in the Premier League for that long, I thought he’d only just moved there! Time flies, I suppose. Or maybe I just didn’t pay much heed to him until he chose to represent Scotland. Yeah, it looks like he’s a better player than I give him credit for. Although, it will be interesting to see if Southampton go down, whether he ends up as a Premier League player or a Championship player in the long term.
  14. I agree. Really poor attitude. Also, his story doesn’t add up, when he recounts it years later and describes himself as ‘nearly a 40 year old.’ Jim Leighton was about a month off being a 40-year-old at the World Cup in 1998. Andy Goram was 34. That’s not old for a goalkeeper at all, wasn’t he still turning out in squads for Scottish League teams over a decade later?! Also, he tries to drag Jim Leighton into the argument, by comparing Leighton’s retirement to his own situation. Bizarre and unnecessary. And, I say all of this as a massive Andy Goram fan! He was the first professional footballer I ever met. I remember queueing up to get his autograph at some kind of meet-and-greet, in around 1993 perhaps, and asking him how many Scotland caps he had and him saying ‘28’. Not sure why that sticks with me, probably because it was such a big moment as a youngster, meeting and chatting to a professional footballer for the first time!
  15. In the scenario you described, we would have at least 16 points. The most that Georgia could get would be 13 points. The most that Norway could get would be 13 points. The most that Cyprus could get would be 12 points. So yeah, barring an asteroid wiping the country of Scotland off the map, or us being thrown out of the tournament for fielding an ineligible player, or there being bonus points up for grabs, which I’m unaware of, I’d say we SHOULD do enough to qualify, with the results you mentioned, right enough. 😬😮😕
  16. Who’s it by? And what sort of era?
  17. I think you might need to take another look at either your calculations or your wording there! How many teams/matches do you think are in our group?!
  18. You mean than Spain doing it overall or than Spain doing it from this point on? One of them is impossible. The other one is incorrect.
  19. I think someone else in this thread made that claim, not you. Also, I think we can guess what team you support.
  20. We had three, for about 10-15 years, until a few months ago.
  21. I agree the English Premier League (Premiership) was weaker back then, but I think not to the extent that closes the gap in quality between our squad then and now. The results of our Scotland squads in the mid to late 1990s speak for themselves. Our current squad may go on to match those achievements but at the moment, notwithstanding a great result the other night, they have achieved nothing close to the 1990s squads as of yet.
  22. I’m pretty sure Kevin Gallagher was injured that season, or surely he’d have played way more games than that? Kevin Gallagher reached a far higher level consistently over his career than Che Adams has so far reached. Adams could find himself as a Championship player again pretty soon and I don’t think he’d be guaranteed a move back to the top flight.
  23. What’s the original song? I don’t think I can place it. I know the origins of the John McGinn song, I believe that’s more my era.
