i've just come down from the Isle of Skye

not comparable we entered into a union, albeit 300 years back we were'nt taken over by the Communists , policed by the Stassi, driving trabants... fall of Berlin Wall was a iconic moment in modern world history ; if Scotland does vote for Independence it will barely register in many parts of the world - the break up of Yugoslavia (without the wars) maybe closer to the mark on the richter scale , or Baltic states etc gaining independence...

not quite the same but , a staunch Ulster unionist watching Ireland play rugby - i don't know the words of the anthem incidentally Catalan fan watching Spain (yes i know they don't typically play games in Barcelona) Quebec fan watching the Canada hockey team at Olympics etc some folk can seperate sport and politics recall the mass singing of Danny Boy for Barry Mcguigan fight in late 80s - QPR i think popular guy the fact that the natuional team were formed almost two centuries after the union should not be lost either

unfortunately a lot of folk over here in Canada think of england as the island , and Scotland is a part/region of it the whole UK of GB & NI thing totally confuses them - the americans being generally even more ignorant in this respect (maybe i only meet the stay at homes...) usually when you say where you're from they expect two words ; Portland , Oregon etc Skawtland leaves thems bemused in many cases even in Canada , you have to be clear about London, England as opposed to London, Ontario even when it's clear which one you're referring to Harper is my local MP i believe

in days of Jim Leighton "Scotlands number one" was never sure as number one for the goalkeeper or mumber one as the best goalkeeper in the country - the chant was at the time of limited competition mind (pre-Goram) billy the fish thompson being closest candidate may be a supporters club that concentrates on goalkeeping eg Peter McCloy loyal Carluke etc

if a No vote carriesa the day , then may as well revert to GSTQ and take it royally up the khyber as the chance will disappear as quick as Brigadoon

read the youguv poll/survey was carried out on just over 1000 people - not sure how many they use typically to get a fair cross-section i do recall watching the flashy tv coverage after 92 general election -newsnight ? - first real use of modern graphic technology exit polls had the labour romping home - we all know what happened though also check out the polls before the quebec 1995 vote ; which ended up being won by a baw hair
