At ease gentlemen hope you are all very well and looking forward to your trip to Dublin in the Summer. I'm just writing about a project I'm working on the Patrick O'Connell Memorial Fund. Mr. O'Connell was an Irish footballer who was the first Irishman to play for and captain Manchester United and won La Liga in 1935 with Real Betis their only title success with a ground capacity of 1,000 people. Patrick went on to manage FC Barcelona and was the manager at the club during the Spanish Civil War - he took the club on a tour to Mexico, the money raised from this tour was wired to an account in Paris and ultimately kept the club a float. There is a bust in Camp Nou of Patrick. Patrick played for Sheffield Wednesday and also Dumbarton in Scotland during his playing days. Sadly Mr. O'Connell is buried in an unmarked grave in Kensal Green in London to this day, he died destitute in London in 1959 aged 71. The Patrick O'Connell Memorial Fund is a small group of football fans from Ireland,England,Scotland and Spain who came together to raise funds to build a memorial befitting Mr. O'Connell's football achievements at the cemetery in London. With the support of Sheffield Wednesday FC and Wednesdayite we have organised a fundraising speakers event at Hillsborough on Friday Feb 27th. As part of the event we are auctioning some of the donated shirts from legends of world football. One of the shirts that maybe of interest to the people on here is a donated 1967 shirt signed by the three goalscorers v England(then world champs) @ Wembley 1967 - McCalliog,Law & Lennox. Just to add Republic of Ireland Act 1948 did not change the name of the state as prescribed in the Constitution the name of this State is "Ireland" and is so prescribed by Article 4 of the Constitution. Anyway Gordon Strachan names his squad tomorrow any surprises ahead?

Well my passport front cover says 'Éire' Ireland the two official names of the state. To note that act was overridden in effect by the British themselves during the Belfast Agreement in the title of the agreement the Irish Government used their domestic respective law name 'Government of Ireland'. The Republic of Ireland was actually created by FIFA in 1953 it's the name given to the football team to distinguish them from Northern Ireland - the country's official title is 'Eire' or Ireland.

It may not be the national teams spiritual home but you can't deny the strong link between Celtic and Ireland and also that Martin O'Neill managed the club for a number of years so will be familiar with his surroundings and will have fellow Celts in his backroom staff Keane,Guppy,Walford. You can bet your bottom dollar O'Neill knows that leading his country to victory v Scotland @ Celtic Park will be extremely special and very sweet and cement his place in Irish sporting folklore. TBH I don't care if there is 5k,10k,15k Irish in the stadium it comes down to the 11 men on the field. It will be a tight tense affair I reckon like 1987.
