Had newly arrived and was out in Lisbon with my backpack when I encountered the team out for a walk in their tracksuits.

Said hello, and McCoist and Gorman stepped forward and did all the talking.

Long story short... parted by saying that I had travelled all the way from Canada to support them and that I knew that they weren't going to let me down.

So... McCoist breaks his leg and Goram lets in five.

Back in the pub I said to the lads "Do you think I put too much pressure on them?"

    lol.

    Either that or you're a jinx. 😉

  2. Can you spare us the club affiliation crap? Partisan attitudes like this is one of the reasons why Scotland/Scottish football is in the mess it's in.

I'm sure there are places in this place for this playground nonsense.

    🙄

I didn’t no, but it’s the younger age groups I was referring to. From what I’ve seen of the likes of Cadden, Campbell, Mallan etc. I don’t think they are ever going to be full international quality. It’s no coincidence that probably our best player in the u21s is Billy Gilmour at 17 years old. Lewis Ferguson has just turned 19 and starting for Aberdeen. Hornby again is only 18 and could still play at u19 level. Ryan Porteous is arguably our best defender in that squad, and he is still only 19 and starting for Hibs.

Maybe I am overly optimistic, but much better signs in my opinion.

    I don't know.

Personally, I'm sick and tired of optimism and clawing onto a shining light.

I'm an advocate of 3 at the back, but even so, I hope we don't get slaughtered tonight.

Pretty much what I would pick,, with so little to pick from

    OK.

    It looks like:

                             Gordon

    O'Donnell   Hendry   McKenna   Robertson

    Forrest    McGregor   McGinn    Armstrong

                    Naismith     McBurnie

    4-4-2? We'll probably lose 0-5

Haha you are indeed very pessimistic, and I don’t blame you in the current climate.

But, the players we are producing at age group level now, don’t only compete and get results against some of the top nations, we also play possession football against them. And even at 16/17/18 years old some of these boys are getting first team exposure, Cochrane at Hearts is injured at the moment, but Levein has already said he’s the best midfielder at the club.

I'm guessing you didn't see the under 21's vs Ukraine.

Our players couldn't control the ball. All they did was play the Scottish way, which is booting the ball as far away from their goal as they possibly could. We were lucky to lose 3-1.

  7. When club sides are run badly there are usually picketing and demonstrations by the fans, why should it be any different for an international team? This Scotland situations means more to one of us than the entire board of the SFA, so why can't we arrange a demonstration? I'm not saying that we should storm the offices of Hampdem (That'll be Plan B), but we should at least be able to organize something in order to get our voices heard.

Apparently I've jeopardized my SSC membership by unmasking McCrae as the board members that was allegedly laughing at the Tartan Army, so it's clear that I want those a-holes out of their roles, no matter the cost!

Time's up. (Forgive me for stealing that from another group)

I don't remember us sticking rigidly to a 3-5-2, we played a back 4 a lot at that time too.  Plus McLeish's formation was 3-5-2 but the two wing backs don't contribute much to the midfield so its more a 3-2-3-2, which is a very narrow formation.  I think the Great Craig Brown played a 5-3-2.  The back 5 played across the backline, plus a defensive mdfielder, i'm ok with that but it is very defensive, good for away games I guess.

So the difference is McLeish was a back 3, Brown was a back 5.  Big difference.

Plus I agree its not all doom and gloom, don't forget about Harry Cocharne as well.

Then you're remembering wrong. Home and away we played with 3-5-2 from 1993 to 2001 (with tactical variations). Do you remember the European Championships play off matches against England? More specially the match at Wembley? For the last 30 minutes David Beckham was pretty much playing as a right back as he was being pushed back by our left wing back so much.

Hell, I still have the matches on VHS.

I found an interesting article from '99:

"he (Brown)  readily admitted that Scotland's customary 3-5-2 formation was modelled on the German system."

It was a 5 when we were defending, but it sprung into a 3 when we were attacking.

Yeah, Cochrane is a smashing player, too bad he's been pushed out of the picture by so many Hearts signings.

I am available but have recently been diagnosed with arthritis in my big toe so might need a pain killing injection. Who else is available? My son's available too under the grandparent rule, he's a bit of a headless chicken, hasn't really played competitively since he was about 11 but he can run around and stuff like that.

If that's a legit offer then I'm all for it!

At least you and your son would care more than a bunch of numpties that want to stay in good shape for their clubs.

Sorry about the diagnosis, by the way.

They might not be the quickest when it comes to top speed, but that 5-10 yard burst of acceleration to get past a defender, Forrest and Fraser both have!

Its the speed of thought which is the biggest issue with some of our players.

I'd give up both players for a carbon copy of Davie Cooper, a player who had zero pace.

Ryan Fraser is one of the fastest players in the Premier League he once actually outpaced Hector Bellerin who was officially the fastest at the time. It literally only takes a quick Google search to find this information out

It's a common misnomer that Fraser is fast. People think "Small" + "Winger" = Speed.

I've never seen him out-pace anyone.

20 fastest players in EPL last season

15 fastest players in EPL this season

This explains your rose tinted specs about Duncan Shearer and Billy Dodds. You were young and naive.

I was young once, but never naïve.

Shearer and Dodds were pretty much the B strikers back in the day. But yes, they're still better than what we have right now.

Did McInally play as a full/wing back?  I've just somehow got that in my head.  I wasn't there, maybe if someone was and is out of therapy they could let us know.

The website said that he did.

To be honest, you're probably right. I was only about 14 back then, probably why I can't remember. I still remember it well enough to be emotionally scarred by it, though.

I could be wrong, its a while ago

Levein, Gough and McPherson started the match, but I can only see one full-back (McKimmie). To be honest I have no idea what formation it was. I don't remember Roxburgh ever playing a formation that wasn't 4 at the back.

One thing surprises me, though, I had no idea Carlos Queiros was the manager that day.

I remember the last time we played three at the back against Portugal. To say it did not go well is an understatement.

    The 5-0 game?

That match scarred me growing up. I wasn't aware that we played with 3 at the back, though.

I would still have 3 at the back. If it yields the same results as it did after that 93 match then we have to.
