Bates has never been in a squad.

McDonald and Russell have only really been picked by McLeish. Previous managers didn't think they were good enough.

GMS ahead of all the Celtic players that were ahead of him when he was at Celtic?

Rhodes hasn't been near a squad in years.

There are 4 players at Celtic alone that would improve that team. Not to mention McKenna, Snodgrass, McGinn, Ritchie, Phillips...

As I said in my previous post, arguing over these players is nothing but semantics.

All of the players mentioned are pretty much of the same standard. Picking one over the other won't greatly improve us, nor will it greatly weaken us. I pray for the day that we are in a position to squabble over players who will vastly improve us, but we aren't anywhere near that place and time.

I am a little surprised he's chosen Bates over McKenna, and no start for either of the McGregors. Think I'd also like to see McGinn in there for either Armstrong, McDonald, or GMS. Cairney should be fit again for a call up too, and he was playing really well before his injury. I'm not sure Tierney will be dropped either.

In other news, Ryan Christie seems to be in the middle of a purple patch.

To be completely honest, all of the players mentioned are all in the same bracket. None are massively more brilliant than the others.

That being said, people arguing about playing player X over player Y for Scotland doesn't really do anything for me, as we have no player who stands out from the group.

Andy, are you okay? I'm worried about you.

    Bates? McDonald? Russell? GMS? Rhodes?

This is a competitive game and you've picked a B team.

Where exactly do you think we are in the footballing world?

Bates, McDonald, Russell, GMS and Rhodes ARE where we are. Scotland are weak all over the park, like it or not those five are in the mix. Who do you suggest we pick? Our invisible players who play for Juventus, Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, Barcelona?

Some Scotland fans really do need a reality check.

  4. After watching the Under 17s lose to Cyprus on Monday I've lost all optimism, at all age groups.

Yes, we went down to 10 men early in the match, but none of our players did much apart from lumping the ball into the air.

So much for the "we're making progress" and "our younger age groups are starting to play football the proper way". Maybe it's unfair to judge them in that match, as we got a red card early on, but come on, it's Cyprus. We're playing Switzerland on Wednesday, if we can end the match with 11 men it'll be progress...

What exactly is supposedly wrong with Griffiths? No one has come out and said what the injury is, and today Rodgers is saying he's not sure, and taking it on a day to day basis. Seems that there is definitely more to this story.

If it's a personal issue then it's none of our business.

That’s two high profile games he’s scored in. If his Uncle had his physique and pace he’d have been world class. Hopefully Lewis has the Ferguson footballing genes.

The goal against Burnley was world class.

I wasn't kidding, though, it would really benefit his game if his team played football on the ground as opposed to playing American football.

Just imagine if England games were constantly commentated by a Scotsman. It really cannot be hard to find a Scottish commentator

    It's a thorny one.

Look at our terrestrial Television; it's filled with English shows, English commercials and English presenters. The Term "BBC Scotland" and "STV" are mere labels. Our entire television coverage is English. That being said, you can hardly be surprised about SKY coverage being the same.

Personally, I don't mind the guy. I'm more concerned about our poor team, rather than a commentator.

To be fair the credit for that should go to big Nick Capernicus. Also, a team in the best league in world football is sinking that low at the moment, so why shouldn't we at least consider it?

    True.

Best league? Meh… it's a matter of opinion. I would say that, team by team, La Liga is the best league in the world. But to answer your question, we should definitely consider it. What are the alternatives, Jason Cummings? 😂

    It is dire, though...

A few weeks ago I suggested Paterson as a far better striker option than Naismith... And I was ridiculed... I will concede Naismith is playing quite well at club level, but at best is a #10 and never a striker... McLeish has to be looking at Paterson up front... His last 2 Cardiff goals were both opportunistic strikes on the deck... But he is great in the air which is dead handy not only in attack, but also defense... Scotland are far too suspect to set pieces at the back, and Paterson could certainly help sort that out...

I wouldn't take it personal. Galileo was ridiculed (and held under house arrest till his death) for stating that the Earth revolved around the Sun.

No offence to Paterson, but it just shows how low we've sank when we have to consider a player who was a right-back a year and a half ago, to solve our striking crisis.

Does he really want to play for Scotland though ?

Good question. I think McLeish should ask Fraser flat-out whether he wants to play for Scotland or not. If not then fair enough. The fact that he always turns up for Scotland would suggest that he does want to be a part of the squad, if he didn't want to be then he'd simply tell the manager that he doesn't want to be selected.

It's true. Perception is all relative. I only saw the 2nd half tonight, and yes, he did make some good contributions (a goal-saving sliding block for one), but he was unable to grab the game by the balls, and his set pieces were poor.

Edit: Maybe i just expect higher standards, i dunno

In all honesty, I don't think we have any midfielders who are able to grab a match by the scruff of its neck/grab it by the balls. There's no doubt he's a good player and he will definitely end up in the EPL. Several weeks ago people (in the same Villa forum) said that he'll probably end up at Liverpool or Man City... I wouldn't exactly go that far. He'll join a mid-table EPL club.

The common consensus is that he reminds them of James Milner. I can certainly see that comparison, what with his engine. Whether he does as well as Milner, we'll see. His lapses of concentration is a worry as well as his poor decisions making at times. If he could eradicate his mistakes then he could be a top player. I hope a season in the Championship will help him cut out all the sloppiness, but it's not like he's a youngster. He's 25.

McGinn-Villa love in on Twitter tonight, fans very impressed

I don't know why, he was fine, but he wasn't particularly good. His passing was rash at times.

Football fans do have a way of looking at things through rose tinted glasses. A person on a Villa forum called him the "Scottish Steven Gerrard".

    I wish he was!

He barely played in Toulon. Are you not thinking of Mikey Johnston?

No. But you're right, he only played 40 minutes. For some reason I thought he played more than that.

In those 40 minutes he did show flashes of how good he is, though. He's one to keep an eye on.

Who the fuck is St Clair?

He was brilliant at the Toulon tournament. I was skeptical of him at the start of the Tournament as he looked a little ropey, but as the tournament wore on he was electric.

Do we actually have that decent a pool of centre halves now? I mean Souttar will be out for the next two matches, and we've been starting Charlie Mulgrew. If McKenna or Mulgrew pick up an injury things start to look real ropey.

Sounds like Cooper really isn't an option, I just find it fascinating how a player can look so good on paper but not be that good in real life. I guess I should watch the Leeds match this weekend!

    Fair point.

  16. Does It really matter?

The pool of central defenders we have are all decent and of the same standard. I don't think we have one center back who will greatly improve us, so talking about Liam Cooper or Liam Lindsey, etc, is really irrelevant.

  17. 5 Scots started for Celtic and they could've been beaten by 4 or 5.

This is why Celtic always get beat in Europe under Rodgers. He likes his teams to play open and expansive football, that's find in Scotland when you're playing against teams full of free transfers, but in European competitions if they go toe-to-toe with teams with an actual transfer budget, they'll get beat.

Same with Scotland, we have to stay compact and defensive and be hard to beat. (At least against the top teams) We don't have any choice. Boys like McGregor and Forrest and Christie, et al, may be good in Scottish football, but let's face it, they are on the bottom rung of European football's ladder.

    Tierney played well, though.

  18. From what I've seen of Fraser is that he does his best work when he drifts into the middle.

If people thinks that Fraser is an old fashioned winger who runs at his full back, glides past them and whips in a dangerous cross, they are very wrong. If anything, he's more like an old fashioned inside forward. He could certainly play in the middle of a 5 man midfield. His commitment to Scotland is up for debate, though.

As far as wingers go, in the old fashioned mould, we don't have any, or at least, we don't have many good ones. Forrest is like Fraser, where they're better when they drift into the middle.
