It's positive that the big clubs are taking note of our youngsters but from our selfish point of view what is slightly worrying is that a potentially impressionable 16 year old  is moving to what i expect is his country of birth.

His older brother even though born in London seems very committed to Scotland so hopefully he has ambitions to play senior level with his big bro one day.

The Sfa need to play their part by keeping tabs on the boy & if merited including him in the under age squads.

I think he was born in Scotland. Seems a bit similar to Dembele that Dapo was born in London and Dire in Scotland (like Karamoko's younger brother). So he's eligible for Scotland and, I guess, Nigeria. Wikipedia just says "Nigerian descent".

Rangers are in an odd situation. Gerrard has not shown any desire, outwardly, of supporting Scottish football if you look at the first team but the club seems filled to bursting with young talent. I am sure he will want that to develop over the next year or so. I guess a trophy is just so important for the immediate future for him.

  2. This is a surprise. I didn't even realise Dapo had a brother who played. Is he any good? No, he's Dire. Ahem.Screenshot_20200929-194216_Twitter.thumb.jpg.6a8c13133f831b5b54b5c235ff55d5cc.jpg

An interesting question, should we be:

    a. As excited as a youngster joining Bayern

    b. Pleased that youngsters are picked up by big clubs but not as positive than if it was Bayern (man city Hoover these kids up and we never see them again. Or

    c. Not even interested.

I do think the number of youngsters at the biggest clubs is positive.

It's the same with Ethan Hamilton when he was with Manchester United. He's now with Peterborough.

Yes, he's not played at a higher level than English League one, but calling up players from Ayr United, MK Dons etc, over him is just crazy.

Does that not answer your own question? "He's now at Peterborough". I've seen a few Man Utd and Arsenal kids on loan over the years and a number were rubbish. Anyway, I'm not saying that Hamilton isn't any use as I've never seen him but some good players come through the Scottish lower leagues and it makes sense for them to be in the U21s.

  4. That's not too bad a squad. I think there are a number there who'll get caps for the seniors (both McCrories, Ferguson, Turnbull, Campbell and Porteous) and several I'm really keen to watch. Add in Gilmour and some of the other age groups and the future is bright. Some make it, some don't and it's often not the ones you expect. That's just the way it is.

Would like to see this Ashby as it's exciting to think there might be competition for RB soon.

I'd be tempted to ask what you think our line up will be in 2024 but I for one don't want to suggest one to get shot down! Ok....

    1. McCrorie

    2. N Patterson

    3. Robertson/Tierney

    4 & 5. Porteous/Souttar/Morrison

    6. McCrorie

    7. McGinn

    8. Gilmour

    9. Hornby (probably not)

    10. Turnbull

    11. Johnston

Classic OF operating procedure: sign troublesome diddy team player for buttons then leave him on your bench where he can't do you any damage.

I really hope that won't happen this time. He's too good for that, surely.

I wonder if Lennon is buying some players with next year in mind. After the 10 in a row business is done with some of those players, like Christie, might be off.

    SFA Twitter has link

    It has Lithuanian commentary.

Good to see a bit of argy-bargy. At least some passion from the U21s.

That said, we've dived a bit

  7. I get shot down when I say this (and that's fair) but I'll stick with what I've said for the last couple of years which is that Tierney is better than Robertson at LB. I think he's probably the most versatile player we have and would even fair well as a holding midfielder.

That's not to say Robertson isn't one of Europe's top left backs and every option should be explored to keep them playing together. Just wish we'd tried Tierney on the left of two CBs last night.

  8. I'm not having it that our players are not good enough. We have enough about us to beat Israel and the Czech republic when they're this depleted.

I support Clarke but I cannot believe he's starting McTominay at the back. Not acceptable. Nobody is closing anything down and McLean is a waste of space. Jack got criticised for passing sideways but he closes down.

No McGinn or Tierney is a disgrace. Our two best players are6on the pitch.

    Palmer.    Cooper.       Tierney.       Robertson

                        Mctominay.   Fleck

       Armstrong        Mcginn.         Christie

                                  Dykes

I'd be happy to see how that goes. Does anyone have an idea of the scale of difference between the left of 3 CB's and the left of 2 CBs? Has Tierney ever done the latter?

Right backs aren’t wing backs though. Forrest is wasted at wing back and there isn’t really a viable substitute in that squad. What if he got injured, change the whole system again? Clarke has fallen into the trap of trying to be too clever. Get back to a 4-5-1 especially now we have a striker who will be ideal for it. There is zero width in that formation yesterday.

I agree with this. Feel a bit sorry for Forrest as he tried but he's not a wing back.

I think that all the talk of formation is pointless if you don't have the players. Sometimes you play a not-quite-as-good player because they are the best in that position. If it doesn't look like we have a suitable right wing back we just don't play that way. The problem then is Tierney. Can he play the left of 2 Centre backs? If not, drop Robertson and play Tierney at LB. Personally I'd like to see Clarke give Tierney a chance at CB in a back 4 against the Czechs to see.

Never play McTominay in defence again and swap McGregor for Fleck/Armstrong.

Is there? We haven't looked like scoring all night.

Well, I can't argue with that.  But I think there are tweaks needed, not wholesale changes. Tierney has been excellent and is our best player. McTominay's never a centre back and I'd drop McGregor.
