What I don’t understand is why Strachan can’t see the guy’s a donkey?

To be fair, he had a decent game against Lithuania but then the whole team did.

He was utter pish against Malta and not much better against Slovakia.

    Why did he start tonight?

He plays at a good level at a top half premier league team most weeks.

He was a big disappointment these two games. Frustrating as he played well the last double header.

Generally when you select your squads/teams you go with the guys playing at the highest levels and Phillips is one of those.

The qualifiers for the Euro 2020 tourney dont start until March 2019, because the Uefa Nations League malarkey starts in September of next year. The thing is, you can qualify for the Euro's via the Nations league, as well as the Euro's qualifying competition.

    UEFA Nations League

As I've said all that guff is harder to work out than the 2nd place table.

What is the point of playing the nations league if you're then having the usual groups for the euros?!

I would move heaven and earth to get Michael O'Neill.

He'll certainly leave Northern Ireland as/when their world cup campaign ends.

They pay him a pittance, he's performed miracles for ages now there and many in their squad are well into their 30s so think they'll be a break up and they don't have a huge pool of options to replace them so they'll probably fall back to being 4th in groups.

Not sure though if his first choice will be to try to pull another long suffering national team kicking and screaming to a major tournament for the first time in a generation.

He will surely get club offers and good ones at that.

Well they were stuoid enough to give it to Levein and Burley.

Burley was still a decently regarded manager when he was appointed so could see the sense although quickly became clear managing high profile players was beyond him.

Levein was a disaster, his reign really pushed Scotland a long way back imo in terms of how he approached games with no strikers and some of the terrible options he called up, Gary Kenneth?!!

    Much worse than Strachan.

  5. John Collins always speaks well on TV and he's played abroad but he was last a manager 10 years ago.

Player mutiny forced him out at Hibs and then he had a spell in Belgium.

It's the same with anyone suggesting Walter Smith. Good manager in 2007 but he's been out of the game a long time now and managers in semi retirement just lose touch with things as the game keeps on moving at a considerable pace.

It needs to be someone in work and not completely terrible so hopefully a very low bar the SFA won't fall below!

You do realise that its the SFA doing the hiring here.

Aberdeen guy asked me for foreign options so I gave him a couple.

If you're asking me to try to answer his point while compiling the cheapest list of managerial rejects you can find home or abroad then it would take me a while.

Even the SFA isn't stupid enough to give someone like Owen Coyle the job. They could well bite on Moyes or Lambert though.

  7. Abysmal result considering how easy the away game was.

    It did cost qualification aswell.

It's o.k bring up the England game but Scotland took 1/6 out of the two games v England. Slovakia took 0.

Scotland took 4 points off Slovenia, Slovakia took 3.

    Both beat each other.

Slovakia took 6 points v Lithuania.

To me for a team to qualify you simply have to take 12 points off the pot 5 and 6 teams to qualify. It becomes too tricky otherwise.

2 international dates in November, another 2 in March and chance for a couple of friendlies before World Cup so possibly 6 matches before qualifiers (League of Nations or whatever it`s called) start. Good opportunity to get some young players and try to get a good start to qualifying.

Wouldn't use two internationals dates in November.

Give time for players and people to reflect on this campaign especially the ones who may call it a day like Brown, Morrison and Fletcher.

I also am based in the West Midlands and follow Walsall and their game v Blackburn on the international weekend will probably be called off as Mulgrew will get called off so could do without that.

I also read an article in the Times that playing too many friendlies in a year can knacker a teams world ranking. Swiss and Poland hardly played any friendlies and both in the top 10 and so get easy qualifying groups.

The two dates in March are fine for a new manager to have a look at a squad against nations heading to the world cup.

On the player front think central midfield will see some changes. Brown, Fletcher, Morrison and Snodgrass all in their 30s so could see an international retirement.

Said  it elsewhere but while Berra-Mulgrew have done o.k against better teams it just gives cheap goals away particularly from high balls.

There must be a young CB out there in the SPL or England that can break through in the next year?!

    You’ve completely missed my point.

Why does it have to be a Scotsman?

Youve already said there’s none decent out there, why settle for a mediocre replacement?

If you read my first post I suggest Michael O'Neill given he was linked tentatively a few months back given he lives in Edinburgh.

    He's not Scottish is he...

Would've taken Lagerback when he was leaving Iceland. Proven time and again at international level and would fit the culture/style of play. People can't say Norway have better prospects over next few years.

They'll be some decent alternatives floating around after the world although doubt SFA would wait that long.

Bert Van Maajwick. Took Holland to 2010 world cup final and just qualifed Saudi Arabia to their first finals since 2006.

    Happy now?

    :banghead:

Never said he'd take it if offered (I assume you're a Don.)

Maybe he dreams of winning the SPL with Aberdeen (If Leicester can do it in England....), maybe he dreams of making the europa league group stage with Aberdeen (Calderwood did it) so the job is far from finished in that case...

Or he's waiting for a team better than Sunderland to give him a call....

Forrest should've started tonight.  He was good on Thursday. And I say that as someone who doesn't think that much of him.

He's just a run up blind alleys player for me although Phillips was poor tonight.

Lithuania draw at the start was the killer.

    Yep.

That was the Georgia result in this campaign. Considering how easy the away game was not beating them at Hampden was criminal.

Everyone will look at the England game but the score was 0-1 at 87 minutes and everyone would've taken a point before Griffiths stepped up for the first free kick.

Scottish fans on 5 live calling for Forrest to start.

  13. Bannan used the ball well I thought tonight.

Again probably in the category of good squad player but not good enough to be a regular starter.

There will be some regeneration in central midfield anyway as Fletcher and Scot Brown (again) will probably call it a day. Maybe Snodgrass aswell.

It's not Martins fault he tries his best.

Strachan needs to be replaced, sadly another campaign has gone, a campaign he shouldn't even have been in charge for.

Martin has made vital contributions in this campaign.

Scored the winner v Slovenia, involved in the winner the other night and he also won the free kick v England which lead to the Griffiths second.

That adds up to a decent amount of points.

He's obviously not good enough to be a starter but no issue with him being in the squad given what he's done in last 12 months.

  15. Can only look ahead to this now.

When is the draw, how should be the manager etc, will Brown/Fletcher retire or stay on for one final push like many of the Northern Ireland players did, will this board get a reprieve?

I do think there's a decent chance Scotland will qualify IF momentum is maintained which is a big if of course given it's a year before a competitive game.

Let's remember with the euros format Scotland would be in a play off place. I believe though Uefa in thier wisdom have got some wierd nations league format which is even harder to work out than who qualifies for the play offs!

Still at least Hampden will host some games!

We finished 3rd, not that it matters. He stilll has to go

When is the draw for the next campaign?

It's actually been a positive year. 14 points from 6 games, not sure how many teams below the top teams have managed that in the european section.

The emergence of Griffiths and Tierney have been massive pluses in the last year.

The team have also shown a great knack to score late which is a good trait for any emerging team to have.

There is a base to qualify for the next campaign.Remember 24 teams make the euros compare to just 13 for the world cup so the numbers are much more kind.

I just worry if there's a change of manager the SFA will waste it all by appointing a no hoper as manager.

This to me is similar to 2007. McLeish gets Scotland to brink of qualification leaves and the next two managers over the next five years were Burley and Levein who wasted decent qualification groups and dragged Scotland right down.

  17. Fallen short again I'm afraid.

He's not the worst Scotland manager ever but two 4th place finishes.

What the second half of the campaign has shown is there ARE decent players in the set up who can lead Scotland to euro 2020. Griffiths coming through as prolific striker is a big boost for the next campaign.

Would try for Michael O'Neill if Norn Iron miss out on the world cup as he's shown he can organise a team effectively over a qualification period. Would imagine he'd want to go into club football.

McInnes is the best Scottish candidate. Likes of Lambert and Moyes are way past their best as managers now.

What the heck is driving Slovenia on? They have no chance of qualifying.

Conceding terriority and giving them more and more of the ball....

They're hadly San Marino btw, had excellent home results in this campaign.

  19. 3 minutes ago, Caledonian Craig said:

Devastating. How many goals have we conceded from set pieces in this campaign I wonder?

    No good CBs I'm afraid.

In fairness Berra-Mulgrew haven't been too bad since paired together but one plays for a mid table SPL team and the other in the third tier of English football.

If Scotland had Norn Iron CBs they'd be in the play offs.

  20. All over folks....time to look ahead to 2020 (although not on this board).

People under estimated Slovenia, yes they were poor at Hampden but they're the typical east european team that don't travel well but are very very tough to beat on their home turf.

Even with little to play for they still have quality players like Illic on the park.

Strachan's lack of subs and taking off a striker immediately after 1-1 are unforgivable though.

He's not the worst Scottish manager ever but two full campaigns now and 4th is the best he can do.

    Ritchie now out.

That's a big blow. Direct player and ahead of Snodgrass in the pecking order atm.

Just need Phillips to pick up his annual injury before an international break and you've got a very pedestrian 5 man midfield behind Griffiths.

  22. Coutts and Fleck could both be premier league players this time next year.

Both key players in a Sheffield United team that walked league one last year and are looking good bets for a top 6 finish this season with the momentum they have.

Watched the Sheffield derby last weekend and they outshone Bannan in the midfield battle so I'd have them in this squad ahead of Bannan and McArthur who can't get a game for an awful Palace.

I never said I'd start either btw. It will be Fletcher + 1 obviously but I thought people wanted to see Strachan pick form players in the squad.
