  1. That's the thing I don't get, Hampden had a running track (it does set it apart as a unique stadium in British football but not great sightlines if you're in the front rows) before redevelopment, gets all the money spent and still has the running track. Apart from the Commonwealth games, what other Athletics events happen?

The best runner up by miles, really unlucky to be up against such a strong Portugal team.

UEFA have got this system wrong, can't believe they've persisted with it as long. If there was one less group you could have 8 group winners plus the best runner up qualifying, with the remaining runners up plus the best 3rd place getting a play off. At least that way no one is being penalised despite finishing runner up in their group.

Edit- Just realised there's not enough international dates in the calendar to have groups of 7 plus a play off. Back to the drawing board...

The euro 2008 qualifiers were groups of 7 weren't they. First and only time in recent memory it's been just top 2 going through and no play offs.

  3. How much did the redevelopment actually cost?

Ground with the running track looks much the same as it did in the 70-80s bar the extension and museum.

I'd go for a different option, rotate the games around the country so one of Celtic Park/Ibrox, Tynecastle/Easter Road, Pittodrie and Hampden all get games depending on opposition.

It worked well enough for France 98 qualifiers when Hampden was having its rebuild.

Hampden is great with 40-50k. Less so with 20k for friendlies and qualifiers against Slovenia and Malta. Play those games somewhere else.

  4. He was on the bench for Stoke at home to Chelsea recently.

Shawcross, Zouma, Cameron, Wimmer and Martins Indi all ahead of him though....

You'd think he'd go out on loan to a championship club in January.

  5. Yes group was Holland, Scotland, Norway, Macedonia and Iceland.

Iceland were nowhere near as good then as now and 6 points were taken.

Norway home game was Iwelumo missing an open goal.

As ever there was a rubbish result that killed qualification, 1-0 defeat in Macedonia. They were easily beaten at Hampden.

If you look back last 15 years that was arguably the easiest group to get a play off spot from but Burley just wasn't good enough.

  6. First one that came to my mind was euro 96.

Beat Swiss 1-0 with a McCoist goal and Holland were getting humped by England so the GD was fine.

Then with 10 mins left Kluivert hit a powerpuff shot that went through Seaman and Holland somehow scraped through.

Can anyone at that Swiss game remember if Scotland tried to score more or were just playing for the 1-0? Pretty sure the McCoist goal was early on in the game.

  7. June is always dodgy for pull outs etc, two games then isn't really ideal although don't really want to be in a 5 team group again.

Odd there's play offs just 3 months before the main tournament. Won't leave them much preparation time and what about the draw, that's always in December.

But is Moyes past his best? He's in his mid fifties and if he's guilty of anything it's bad decision in his roles. At Man Utd he did not worse if at all than Van Gaal who spent a lot more. Spain was never going to work and neither was Sunderland. As for Lambert, I'm not going to kid on I seen a lot of Villa under him but I was under the impression he wasn't given too much to work with after O Neill. Feel free to educate me though. My issue with Strachan isn't so much negativity, Jesus is take a qualifying campaign littered with 1-0 wins, it's the contradictions over selection and sideing constantly with average players that he can't see by.

We were certainly in a downward spiral when he took over given the havoc Lerner was inflicting.

He played exciting football at Norwich but you wouldn't have known it watching us bar a 6 month spell when things clicked on the counter attack with Benteke.

We had two runs in his final season of 5-6 games without even scoring a goal.

I'd be wary of getting any manager who's been on a downward spiral in recent years.

Likes of McInnes, Alex Neil and Michael O'Neill are getting results and all improving as managers although of course harder to tempt them.

  9. It was always going to be a tough ask, these are squad players after all.

No one seems to really know who the Slovenia players are but their strongest area by a long way is midfield, Illic is a really good player in Seria A and him and Kurtic played for Atalanta who battered Everton recently. They didn't even call up Kevin Kampl who's a good Bundesliga player as he's in dispute with their coach.

Playing Seria A regulars is a bit of a step up from the SPL or championship.

  10. Stand by what I said before. Call ups for Barrie McKay (excellent start at Forest), Coutts and Fleck at Sheffield (both key parts of a Sheffield United team who regularly win week in week out), Graham Shinnie (silly he's rarely been called up as he's a consistant player who can cover a fair few positions). Hopefully Gauld can stay fit and play regularly for the Portuguese club he's at. Portuguese league is stronger than SPL so he'll have a shout if he can do well.

The leagues will be settled after Tuesday but this is  the latest version. My understanding is the winners of leagues A, B, C and D get a place in the playground offs .

O.k.....so you're guarenteed play off place but can still get automatic in the groups by finishing 1-2 in the proper qualifiers?

I think I read they've done it this way to weed out the likes of Malta, San Marino and Andorra without having to make them have to play pre qualifiers as the press frequently calls for.

    Could be wrong though.

David Moyes, Paul Lambert, Stevie Clarke and probably the majority of any foreign managers that would be interested.

Moyes did great work at Everton but he has really lost something since his failed year at Man. United. Wasn't great at Real Soceidad and Sunderland was a disaster. Think he's past his best as a manager.

I follow Aston Villa so my opinion on Paul Lambert....is not printable. If you think the football is negative under Strachan then it would be worse under him.

There's a few Scots who've managed national teams. Bobby Williamson was manager of Kenya for a while bizarrely enough.

Stuart Baxter was raised in Scotland and manages South Africa atm.

One outsider for me would be Alex Neil. Did great at Hamilton, got Norwich up and now doing great work at Preston although doubt he'd consider it so early in his managerial career.

Not sure how this new format in terms of friendlies relates to the qualification process of Euro 2020 but I am led to believe the winners of each League get a play off place. Proper qualification for Euro 2020 does not start until March 2019.

LEAGUE C (teams to be split into one group of three, and three groups of four)
Romania, Scotland, Hungary, Slovenia, Albania, Montenegro, Serbia, Greece, Norway, Israel, Bulgaria, Finland, Cyprus, Estonia, Lithuania

Is it confirmed that will be the final pool Scotland is in? Don't think the draw is until January so still a chance to move up the rankings a bit given 4 points this month (although given how this works don't think it will be that beneficial).

Looking at that Serbia is best team by a mile so avoid their group, likes of Slovenia, Greece, Albania, Romania tricky but nothing to be scared of...well at least at Hampden.

What I don't understand is what reward you get for winning the group or finishing 2nd? As you still have to then play the normal qualifiers afterwards.

I can see a few going and I think a few should be done now. Those I could see retiring, Fletcher, Brown, possibly Gordon. Others who should go are Berra, Mulgrew, Anya, Bannan, Martin, S Fletcher, Mcarthur.

Time for us to follow the lead of the Welsh about ten years ago and play the young players. Guys like Ramsey for them have about 60 caps and are mid 20s.

Berra and Mulgrew will still be around as there's little depth or quality at CB.

Grant Hanley will get called up again if he starts playing week in week out but he's a clogger and worse than those two.

Central midfield is different as there is depth there and also young players starting to stake a claim so you could get away with a retirement or two.

  15. I know it's not the 80s anymore when Aberdeen and Dundee United somehow ruled europe but it would help things if a club outside of Celtic could do something in europe.

Where Aberdeen the last club to make the europa league group stages? If so that was 2007. Since then league of Ireland teams like Dundalk and St Patricks have made it so it isn't impossible.

Says it all when you look at the standard of teams who knocked out the Scottish teams this summer.

Would we have beaten Slovenia, Sloakia, Lithuania (a) and drawn with England if we had beaten Lithuania at Hampden? I doubt it somehow.

6 points from the first two would've been a very strong start psychologically.

Worth noting that Slovakia lost their first two so having to make up 6 points would've been tough for them.

Simply Lithuania are a poor team and not getting the full 6 off them was criminal. Slovakia did and they still have a chance of play offs if results go their way tomorrow.

Passing up friendly dates in November isnt the way. Play, move on, try players we were too afraid to try in these games. Absolutely nothing to be gained from shutting down for half a year.

Depends who you can find to play. Many teams will be playing play offs, the bigger teams are playing each other so you're looking at other teams who didn't make the world cup and not sure how beneficial that would be.

There's two dates in March when world cup teams will be looking for opposition and also in May just before the tournament starts. Then I assume they'll be one in August/Septmber so plenty of dates to play with.

So you think he should have started tonight after being rank on Thursday? Are you Gordon Strachan in disguise?

I don’t have a problem with Phillips starting against Slovakia. I have a problem with him starting tonight and I have a bigger problem with him not being taken off tonight when he was clearly worse than a man down.

Should read what I posted. I said he underwhelmed in both qualifiers. He did play well in the previous double header in September although against weaker teams.

I just said why Strachan picks.

He starts regularly for a solid mid table prem team. Frequently assists and pops up with goals aswell.

That's why he's in the squad as he plays week in week out at a higher level than half the squad.

    NO ONE MENTIONED PEDRO!!!!!!

On a similar theme Advocaat has managed Holland, U.A.E, South Korea, Belgium,Russia, Serbia and Holland again since 2004.

Can see him "offering his services" if Holland let him go.
