Looks like you haven’t a clue, trying to use a no take zone that is tiny, that is driven by divers(who wouldn’t be allowed in the HMPA’s) to justify cutting off massive swathes of the sea, what equates to a community? I fish lobster 6 miles from my village, if there A small village of holiday homes near where I fish, do they get the say if I can fish there, it’s an idiotic policy driven by idiots who haven’t a clue

Just by the by, and at risk of being called a tofu-munching weirdy green, I'd ban all "fishing" of lobster and crab. Seeing how they are treated is an eye-opener. Hope a giant lobster mutates one day and takes its revenge on disgusting humanity.

We're barely a kick in the tail away from that now.

You look at Ireland - particularly in respect to the link Dave posted above - a country with a smaller population that ours (currently) and fewer natural resources, yet they've got themselves into a position where the government is so much in surplus it's able to consider starting a sovereign wealth fund.  A country, not without its problems by any means, but still possessing a self-confidence and strong sense of itself.

Then you look at Scotland, full of people whose sphere of consciousness stretches no further than England; where grey little politicians like Anas Sarwar and Douglas Ross offer no ambition or vision for the place other than remaining in a rapidly declining UK, and where the fourth estate consists of nyaffy client journalists churning out tawdry, parochial nonsense based on non-news about ferries and motorhomes, while patting themselves on the back like they're Woodward and fecking Bernstein rolled into one.

It's fuckin' heartbreaking, isn't it? From c.2013-2017 I felt we were on the way to becoming a more ambitious, outward looking nation. Genuinely excited at the prospect. Don't see it in my lifetime now.

I don't think the problem with the SNP or the indy movement is the stance of the monarchy.

The problem is the impasse on the next step forward which has no clear path hence the bickering.

For all that Alba seem stauncher on things like stones of destiny, or maybe getting rid of the monarchy, I don't honestly know what their preferred approach to independence is, on the spectrum from 'beg for a section 30' to UDI. Nor the Greens or SNP for that matter.

I wonder if at some time if the stock of SNP sinks low enough, there will be a point at which running under a fresh banner of Yes Alliance in a de facto referendum could come to pass. I am wondering if that could entice out all those who don't normally vote in elections, who came out in 2014, and again in 2015, but melted away again since 2017.

Obviously up till now the SNP don't fancy sharing the stage but as I say if their stock were to fall low enough, a tipping point could be reached. Yes alliance candidates could be put forward on a cross party basis of proportionate vote in the last election, so Alba and Greens would get a minority of seats to contest, but they'd at least get some MPs (maybe the odd ISP or socialist too). The SNP could agree to it if they felt they were going to lose that many seats anyway. A Yes Alliance (or 'Yes to Independence') label on the ballot would help cement the status as a a de facto referendum and the meaning being an unambiguous 'Yes' vote.

The unionist establishment, political parties and media love to attack and smear the SNP at every turn, and maybe have them on the ropes, but they might find it harder to handle a multi-headed Yes Alliance suddenly popping up on the ballot, representing half of Scotland, on an umambiguous 'Yes for Independence' ticket.

Problem is, I don't see evidence of the SNP softening their stance on this. Most distance themselves from associating with the other independence parties, with some openly ridiculing and abusing them. The presence of a small number of SNP reps at the AUOB may be a step in the right direction?

The one thing every single speaker said was that the biggest hurdle was our own internal division , and they are right.

...as evidenced by the direction of this very thread just a few posts down! 😄 Two nationalists and republicans calling each other names for not being nationalist or republican enough. What are we like? Own worst enemies.

Absolutely. Whoever sickens you as an idea for president, you can always vote them out.

And anyway some people argue as if they are iagining a powwerful president like in USA, but it would be a more ceremonial role as in Ireland, say.

Absolutely. Monarchy enables and justifies the very idea of privilege and a stratified society, that some are better, nobler than others, to be bowed and scraped to. It means, well if you accept monarchy, you accept the whole idea of a stratified society. Society may always be unequal, but accepting monarchy means you are not fithgin that inequality, you are accepting it, and thriving on it.

Fight inequality, don't meekly accept. You're so right.

As for finding a suitable way of electing a president, give me an afternoon and I could think up a fair way. Let's stop lack of imagination stopping us progressing.

    I disagree

I would expect it of a child not a fully grown adult.

I had a thing with my digital alarm clock where, if I looked and the display read 17.07 I had to give it the finger, if it was 13.14 I would do a thumbs up. I had lots of other strange touching OCD-esque stuff. I don't now. 😀

Actually, when I'm really nervous they start to reappear. Last minutes of a Scotland game, I'm up to all sorts.

I’m being denied the opportunity to express my opinions and views in the public arena.  I should be able to hold forth at the Edinburgh festival but no-one will book me.

Actually, the reason why no-one would book me is because I’m not a public figure, have no profile and my views aren’t interesting, which is why I’m restricted to spouting forth on here to half a dozen or so equally sad cases.

Cherry has a public profile, she’s an interesting speaker, that’s why she gets invited to speak.   Some people support her slavishly, others find her views and how she expresses them to be offensive.  Personally, I think the only person Joanna is interested in is Joanna.

😄 As others have said, you twist and turn yourself outside in in finding the logic to counteract any perceived slight on the SNP. As the initial point being made stated, it's completely a recent phenomenon and totally aimed at those who question the trans stuff. Never "withdrawing their labour" to protest x-rated content with excessive swearing or violence or insensitive material. Just bullying of those who have genuine concerns re women's rights, in relation to this one niche issue.

The picture of 6 Quislings and Pete Wishart behind a Union Jack with Air Miles Angus in the background with a couple of his gravy train staffers

Yeah, there was that. And there was also a photo of a couple of younger MPs who were there grinning like a couple of eejits. They were there, doubtless on a freebie, all the while not having advanced the cause of independence at all during their time in office. Just seemed very representative of the type of SNP MP/MSP of recent years who has jumped on the gravy train while not doing what we, the SNP voters want of them.

    Just my take.

I was watching the other match. Someone ran on there too but never managed to get on the table.

As it stands i'll be voting for nobody.

The lunatic fringe of Alba puts me off and i don't trust the SNP just now.

Greens i disagree with too much of their policy and i'd never vote for a unionist party.

I really hope SNP can get their house in order before the next election.

Yeah, I'm onboard with most of that. I'm currently investigating whether Alba are more than just a lunatic fringe! I'm attracted by the proactive independence stance.

Been considering this myself. Not sure what to do. Earlier today I watched the video Ally posted during the week. The Barrhead Boy video. It was fairly interesting and they definitely have a more pro active stance , but I also get the feeling some folk connected with Alba are as smitten with AS as those that are accused of being NS sheep.
I am certainly giving it more thought than I ever expected though.

Yeah, I think they need to be considered. The sneering attitude of the SNP towards them is reminiscent of Labour towards the SNP of old and is helping push me their way.

  12. Apologies for yet another politics thread. Had enough of the SNP. Not been a member now for a few years but seriously considering not giving them my vote now. With the corruption (and it is corruption), the lack of movement on (or even remote interest in) independence and general ineptitude, they've done what I didn't think possible and lost my vote. Seeing the grinning fuckwits in New York, just there for a pointless jolly, jumping on the gravy train is the final straw for me.

Always resisted jumping to Alba as some of the more prominent Twitter users give cause for concern. But I'm almost convinced that their more proactive and aggressive approach to independence is what we need. I'll monitor their progress with interest. But the grifters in the SNP have almost certainly lost me for the time being.
