I think I'm for Swinney now.  Give him a chance.  I don't even think he's boring either.  He can putdown quite well and still has fire in the belly.  He's only 60.

The first thing people think about Forbes is her religion.  Poor but that's how it is.  I see her as a wee lassie to be honest.  I'm probably showing my age.  Give her a few years as a deputy would be my choice.

I'll back either of them though.  I think they're at least brave enough to put their heads above the parapet.  Getting the SNP's good policies talked about again is the main driver now.  Plus a more positive take on independence than the doom we have been seeing recently.  Even if it is out of our hands, what have we got to lose by pointing out we want to unite our people to an undeniable majority?

Against my better judgment I gave Humza a chance . I didn’t vote for him but I accepted he won the contest,  even though I had my concerns about how it was conducted. Sadly it ended as I expected.

If a deal has been done then I would want to know how it came about and what, if any, pressure has been used .
I am not an SNP member who pays a monthly subscription and sits back and does heehaw, I actually get involved.

I am at the stage of not knowing if I truly believe independence is their end game, and therefore for everyone’s benefit, I may have to resign my membership. To defend and promote a party you need to believe that the priorities are what you are there for. At least I do. I can still push for independence without being part of a political party. For a while I have thought a separate body may be a better option.

I was really disappointed last night at the meeting.  Can’t really go into detail but felt it was very dismissive if you didn’t agree with the majority, particularly the more prominent members . On one hand it was ‘everyone has the right to their opinion’  but on the other felt like you are idiot if you didn’t go with the flow .

I have a branch meeting tonight. I hadn’t intended going but If I can steer the conversation away from how many pound shilling and pence are in the branch account I am going to try and change some opinions . I made it abundantly clear Humza was not going to cope , but they all voted for him.
The only way, as you say, to stand a chance is to break from ‘continuity candidates’  . It might not work, but the party are left with few choices.

    Waste of time.

Branch conclusion : Kate is intelligent but naive , cost us votes on her performance at last leadership contest, polarising.

    John is fantastic.

Some fear she is not supportive of a society that is equal for all.

Is wanting a society that's equal for all 'loony fringe' now?

Tbf everyone’s idea of an equal society is different. I imagine there are issues that every one of us would draw a line at or regard as a step too far , either due to their beliefs or , in respect of practical financial help, the cost of  creating an equal balance. We all have a different interpretation of what an equal society actually is.

I have never heard her say anything that would give me a concern  , and I have no religion and pretty much dont believe in it at all. I also have a gay sister who voted for Kate Forbes last time so she is not offending everyone who may be affected by gay marriage. I think most level headed people realise she is one person in an entire government and her influence is restricted.

Canny believe I am agreeing with Malcolm 🤦‍♀️

I agree with you re indy.

I'm just trying to figure out which candidate gives the SNP the best chance of losing fewest seats at the upcoming elections. The No-voting Tory voters that Forbes is popular with should be weighted less than the Yes-voting SNP voters in any calculation an SNP member makes when deciding their leader.

Before seeing that polling i would have said Forbes was the best choice to retain SNP seats, but i'm back on the fence now.

    What a phukkin hoot

Hilarious, bonkers and Aussie as a kangaroo throwing a boomerang while playing a didgeridoo snd eating a vegimite sandwich with a can of fosters in its pouch.

    What a great show.👍👍👍👍👍

Aye, it's sweary, but everything was brilliant,

Even the place names, lake Deadloch, valley Glenvalley, mount benmountain is taking the piss

Everyone played their part so well.

    Cath, FFS hilarious

    Eddie,what a hoot

I and my missus highly recommend

Glad you and your good lady liked it Stocky 😊 You can thank Bobster, he put me onto it.
It was funny , although Cath actually got on my nerves ! I was mad that Gavin died in the first episode he made me laugh.

I mentioned to someone else that the show totally changed my opinion of the word ‘cunt ‘ 😆 I really hate that word and only use it in exceptional circumstances ( see Andrew Neil…) but I found the regular use of  ‘rat cunt’ quite funny, to the point I now kinda think of it along the lines of ‘wee shite’ 😆

I am watching Baby Reindeer just now and not really getting the hype, though the latest episode was a bit better.

Got a 6 month deal with Now Tv for £4.99 a month so gone back to Curb Your Enthusiasm which I love. Also been watching Frasier , its the first time since I watched it when it was out. It hasn’t disappointed me.

    It honestly beggars belief.

My husband was moaning his head off when he opened it yesterday, quote ‘ if I had known it was 18 pages ( yes, 18) of Humza shit I wouldn’t have bought it. ‘

Well , heres an idea, why don’t you read a paper that isnt funded by right wing lying scumbags.

It has to be Kate Forbes.
The SNP needs to move on from both Salmond and Sturgeon

    She ticks all the boxes:

    • Cambridge graduate
    • young, female
    • smart and articulate
    • economically literate (worked for Barclays)

The only reason UK media make a fuss about the church she attended is because they are petrified of someone competent.  Hopeful there are enough reasonable / sensible members left in the party to elect the right person.

I'd compare it to Walter Smith taking over from Berti Vogts. A steady hand, but unlikely to be a long term appointment.

If I had to put a bet on the likelihood of either Walter Smith (RIP) taking us to a major tournament or John Swinney leading a successful SNP election campaign my money would still not be on Swinney.

Can I assume that the intention is that whoever gets the gig will lead the SNP to the next election ? If so, can you imagine JS  coping with the media and opposition? He can hardly cope with a Question Time audience. He is TOO nice.

Let me apologise on behalf of the entire population of Paisley for producing that utter cunt of a man.
He is on the front page of his fascist paymasters today spouting his anti Scottish crap. He should be stripped naked and ordered to take the Walk of Shame,  all the way down Causeyside street.
I really hope he lives long enough to see independence. Nothing would give me greater pleasure than witness his gammon face in twisted anguish.

Meh, that wee rant really deserved to be in the Get it Off Your Chest thread. In case it isnt obvious I really dislike him.

I find a lot of the discourse a bit over the top brought on by voracious opinonators on social media.  The SNP are struggling because of splits in the party about gender reform, corruption allegations and Westminster calling their bluff on independence.  Some of that is their own fault and some of it isn't.  The same  people moaning about the SNP also enjoy all the free-at-point of need things. Many would never be put forward by Tories or Labour tied to London Labour, fearful of a backlash.  My own family have enjoyed free additional childcare which is much better than anything in England.  Child payments, rent controls, free transport for kids, vast pay increases for public sector staff.  A non-promoted Teacher can be on £60,000 a year.  from £50k to £60k in 2 years.  The median salary is £32kish, the gap between the two has widened substantially.  For good or bad, the SNP have tried to cater to these "middle of the road" people.  Yet despite this, a few miseries on less impactful polices are hitting support.  They're now being abandoned by them.

I don't see independence happening under the SNP alone and I don't see a suitable vehicle without the SNP signing it off.  They are going to get anywhere between 25-40% of the vote for the foreseeable but never 55-60% which is required.  In other words, they have become a political party, riven by the same problems political parties always have, instead of a national movement.  They should have started a non-party political convention years ago.  This was always on the cards whether you like SNP or not.  Parties become unpopular over time.  Howver, I think many of the politicians in the party have become disillusioned and don't believe their countrymen and women want independence strongly enough.  So they are as well hoovering up the 40% of independence supporters votes where they can, try to fight Scotland's corner but never really push the boat out.  Can you blame them?

I agree with this. On the independence push it’s an unbelievably thin line the SNP are trying to balance. Half the support want  an immediate referendum and the rest want to build support. As you say, every government has their day, I am pretty certain that without independence the SNP would be out of power now.

But for what ? Labour? Yeeha. Lets look forward to all the improvements they are going to bring. Yummy.
I could see people wanting a change of government if they could actually see an improvement, but it ain’t going to happen. Yes, you might get a few potholes fixed but you will be paying Boots the chemist for the privilege when prescription charges are reintroduced.

I am retiring at the end of the year and had a financial guy in earlier to get some advice . He lives just over the border. His son has just graduated and has student debts of £45k. His girlfriend £85k. This is normal. Yippee. Just what every young person wants. Bring it on.

  11. Someone who only a year ago ruled himself out saying new talent was needed does not inspire me with confidence.
IMO John Swinney is either under immense pressure from certain colleagues to put himself forward , or he is allowing his ego to be stroked , neither are a good reason to take on this responsibility.
I actually like John Swinney as a person, but he is not strong enough.

In the interview Ally ( I think) posted, Stephen Flynn did not sound convincing at all at supporting Swinney. Sounded a bit too ‘script like’ than passionate. Makes me think not only is pressure being put on Swinney to stand but pressure is being put on MP’s and MSP’s to nominate him.

There is not one person I feel totally confident about but if she is on the list then Forbes will get my vote again. .

I like John Swinney as a government minister but his name getting put forward is like when a managerial vacancy comes up in Scottish football and the Open All Mics team starts bumming up one of their own like Billy Dodds or Jim Duffy.

Especially when they have previously managed the club and been ineffective at best.

Another leadership contest. At least by retaining my membership I can have another say but if no one is nominated that I feel is competent for the job I wont bother voting. Picking the best of a bad bunch is pointless plus I am not encouraging a party that just makes the same mistakes again.

Has anyone got confirmation of Alba’s demands yet? It would be good to know if they were taking the piss or the high heid yins will just never entertain AS.

She's fine and just cause i think something doesn't mean it is right. She might do really well. However views are entrenched on independence , only time will move the landscape really. Which is done by young people getting older. Which is why young peoples concerns about things were getting aired. The older folk 3 generations above them don't understand that it's always the case that 3 generation gaps never think about the world the same. So you end up in a culture war "woke" blah di blah.

The problem is does Forbes appeal to generations that are not yet entrenched in their views or not. I think for every "older person" she brings in it will be matched by a "younger person" going out.

Hard to say anything concrete though. Always liable to just spout pish where politics are concerned everything is so opaque around it.

This is true ( gaining support in one demographic and losing in another) , probably similar to the Brexit situation where independence support rose in pro EU people but reduced in anti EU .

In Scotland though we still have an older generation and I think the more ‘woke’ policies are harder to implement , particularly when we have a media happy to distort  information. I cannot claim to truly understand all the science , arguments and nuances around transgender for example but its been an easy win for the ‘ anti woke’ as neither does most of the population . Too much focus has been placed on it I think at this particular stage. Easy for me to say though when I am not affected in any significant way by it.

Tbh I am glad something is happening , I feel we have just been sleep walking for years, this is a massive juncture, the SNP really need to consider the bigger picture .

They wanted to dictate what SNP priority policies should be. Now you might agree with what the priority policies should be, and if you do then ALBA is a great place for your vote.

I can see why other folk disagreed though.

I hope, if able, Forbes takes over folk see it won't make much difference on the big issue of independence.

The gradualist approach was the correct approach. Everything was too entenched you need time for the actual population to shift , Brexit might have been a catalysing event to change people's minds pretty ropey though. If impatience had ruled the day and we somehow got another referendum, again there is no mechanism for this outside being given permission but let's just pretend, it would have been lost as well.

Obviously the current FM wasn't up to the job but neither is Forbes, some anachronistic product of Oxbridge and Edinburgh. She's smart will she even want the job at the current state of affairs?

I agree with all of this. However I think Kate Forbes has the ability to steady things and oversee policies that would appeal to a wider range of people, and in turn increase support. Increasing support is the ONLY long term way of independence succeeding.
My concern however is that she is not ‘ likeable’ enough , there is something about her that I cant put my finger on.

My patience with the SNP is being tested. If it transpires that they have rejected Alba’s support for no good reason I will seriously consider my membership. At very best I will refuse to campaign for them. I only joined SNP for independence, if they reject the only other party who has this as a priority then they are not for me.

The subject of the meeting has not been disclosed to us. It could, for example, concern imminent developments in Operation Branchform, or it could relate to the Bute House Agreement between the SNP and the Scottish Greens. Or Scotland could be about to declare war on Morocco or something. But we are told that the fact of the meeting taking place is a 100% certainty.

So no sleeping in tomorrow, readers. It’s probably going to be big.

Missed at the time but had an interesting wee break. Bordeaux for 2 days first, then train down to Handaye in the border for quick change to light rail for San Sebastián. 4 days there then a day trip through Bilbao and the Guggenheim, continuing on to a night in Santander for flight home the next day. Kids and I had a great time but the Mrs wants something more relaxing next time.

Thats a lot of places covered especially with kids. Have heard San Sebastian is lovely . In 2014 we travelled to Split for 3 days , Dortmund for 2 days ( for the Germany game) , Budapest for 3 then Berlin for 3. Was absolutely knackered by the end but really enjoyed the various places.

In Morocco now. Its mainly just for relaxation and sun so not seen very much but we are close to a wee village called Taghazout which is interesting .  An old man gave me a row for taking a video. I didn’t even reallse  until i played the video back later and heard him saying ‘ no video laydee . No nice’ 😂’ I was only taking a quick video of the street he wasnt even in it. The folk are generally very friendly though.
