I really can’t see us losing in Georgia again. I probably said that the last 2 times we’ve had to go there to be fair but this time I think we’ll actually win or at least get a point.

Georgia looked terrible for most of the match against Spain the other day. Constantly giving the ball away. They looked a bit better around the time they got their goal but apart from that spell they barely got out of their own half.

If we go to Georgia with the right attitude and play well they should be there for the taking.

I think you are correct, but some people seem to think we’ve already qualified. Still work to do.

Ive gone on record with my support for guys like Anderson and McTomminay who could have choosen England but elected for us.

Barnes is different for me as he actually played a full international for the A side. I wouldnt be comfortable with him being called up right now.

However if my memory serves me correctly (which isnt always the case), Clarke was aware that Adams was open to selection about 6 months before the Euros but didnt call him up until after the tournament.

If Barnes declares for us and is willing to wait until the start of the World Cup campaign then my thoughts would shift to being more receptive.

Adams played at the Euros and failed to hit a barn door!

  3. I don’t have a problem with this. He’s probably competing with Anderson for a place in the squad, and fairly soon, Doak. No sign of the players being pissed off when Anderson was selected. I think we’ll usually play the 5-4-1 so most likely we’re looking at impact subs. That will change when Robertson is missing or retired.

In a world of arrogant multi millionaire footballers hes a breath of fresh air. Brilliant for scotland and villa.

Just surprised he hasn't been bought by one of the big 6 in england.

Saying that i think villa have never really caused any problems with his availability for scotland so I am happy for him to stay there.

We dont have natural goalscoring strikers so we need guys like mcginn and mctominay to chip in with as many goals as possible.

McGinn will be remembered as a true Scotland great, as will McTominay and quite a few others in this team. McFadden, Barry Ferguson, Brown, Fletcher etc must be gutted they missed out on this era, as instead of 2 or 3 standouts, we’ve got more than 11.

Chances of all that happening must be tiny. Maybe 1 in 300 chance.

Odds of us losing in georgia 6/1

Odds of Norway beating Spain 8/1

Odds of Norway beating us at home 4/1

That comes out 1 in 315 chance.

Odds probably increase to 1 in 400 if we get a draw in georgia as norway would have to win by 2 clear goals at hampden.

Lol not an expert in gambling or odds so maybe someone will correct my calculations which are just based on an online odds calculator.

Being somewhat long in the tooth I can’t discount Scotland getting zero points from the next 3 games.

I’m happy to say though that this is the best Scotland “team” of my lifetime, and I think it will get a fair bit better still.

Yes and I'd say that if any team has to win that game it would be better if it were Norway as there hopes will be extinguished by Spain who they have to play in Oslo. We don't want Georgia winning keeping their qualifying hopes mathematically alive and potentially fired up for our game in Tblisi.

I think Norway will thrash Georgia.

This is obviously a decision he was torn over. The fact that he could be making his debut against England will compound whatever doubts he's having.

I personally wouldn't blame him if he pulled out of this squad due to mixed emotions. We've got plenty of other international breaks to give him caps this year.

Let’s not forget he is only 20 years old and not even a regular at his team yet. It's not like he is going to be slotted straight into the first 11, like Gunn was.

Or he’s got a tight hamstring.

I agree. England, and I say this with great sadness, have an exceptional squad. Hackney is up against:

Jordan Henderson (33), 77 caps - Some Saudi club [will probably drop out soon]

    Declan Rice (24), 43 caps - Arsenal

Kalvin Phillips (27), 27 caps - Man City

Jude Bellingham (20), 24 caps - Real Madrid

Mason Mount (24), 36 caps - Man United

    Conor Gallagher (23), 7 caps - Chelsea

    James Ward-Prowse (28), 11 caps - West Ham

James McAtee (20), uncapped - Man City

Arguably, depending on where in midfield he plays, also James Maddison, Phil Foden, Jack Grealish and Harvey Elliot. Coming behind there are guys like Lewis Miley at Newcastle, Archie Gray at Leeds (fingers crossed he is competing to get in the Scotland squad sooner or later) and Jobe Bellingham. Obviously they don't all play in the exact same way or position as Hackney, but with the money England have invested over the last 15-20 years I think they are becoming an absolute conveyor belt of world class talent.

I just struggle to see where Hackney, who looks like he could be a really good but not absolutely exceptional EPL level player fits? I can't see him being any more than occasional squad filler, if even that.

The Scotland midfield is also very difficult to break into. We were in far greater need of an attacking player. I’d much rather have Anderson than Hackney. Hackney did nothing in our u21s.

Looks like Campbell's Luton career is over. Not even on the bench against Gillingham. Lot of Luton fans thinking the same, one even hoping he's injured, instead of going. Doing a quick Twitter search, they all love him

He’s a good player with plenty of energy but miles off a squad place given who we’ve got nowadays.

Absolute pish. He made a choice to play for us. You reckon this kid wouldn’t back himself to be good enough to play for England when he’s starting to get game time aged 21 for one of the top teams currently in England. That would be a pretty weird attitude.

Do folk not realise that when Scots go and live in England, they bring their kids up to be proud of their Scottish roots? This runs deep. He asked for some time to think about it, as did McTominay. He chose us when he could have waited to see. It’s not like he’s 27 and realised that England are never coming calling.

    Deary me

Spot on. 21 year old EPL first team player at one of world’s richest clubs chooses Scotland and people think he’s not committed. He could have hedged his bets and chosen nobody for the next 3 years, but he didn’t.

Being honest, out of all the eligible players at Newcastle (Anderson, Targett, Livramento etc) Harvey Barnes is the only one we could call up and slip him straight into the first team (would basically be a straight swap for Christie) all the rest would need to wait, and even then, the way he is going he would just be keeping the shirt warm for Doak.

Anderson is a odd one, as I just can not see him breaking into the team any time soon, and if I looked at our team and had to pick who he is replacing, it would be McGregor, and even then he will still have a 2-3 year wait.

Anderson is nothing like McGregor. He’s an attacker in the Ross Barkley mould. I think there is a lot more to come from him, he has great feet and is a very strong lad.
Doak will be next, and I think next season Rory Wilson will get in.

Its all gone abit quiet regarding possible transfers for Tierney, McTomminay and Doig.

Doig maybe slightly different as he will hopefully be 1st choice but I cant get my head around the mentality of the other 2. Both arw clearly not 1st or even 2nd choice. Both were getting pushed out until a player in their position got injured and now possibly being kept short term until that player recovers or another player can be brought in.

I cant help but feel if they were foreign they would be banging down the managers door demanding to move.

McTominay was captain in a recent friendly. I don’t see why he needs to move. He’ll probably start 20 games next season and play in 35. He’s doing great for us and it’s probably in our interests that things stay the same. I don’t know if Neil Lennon permanently wrecked Tierney or if he is capable of playing a full season. He’s currently sensational for us so I’m not too bothered about that one either.

Yeh thats fair enough. I just hope hendry is happy to do the travelling and clarke doesnt mind it either.

It’s not as far as Dubai. Footballers seem to have no problem going there, tacky hellhole that it is.

I could be wrong but has he not only played twice for Liverpools 1st team in competitive games. Once as a sub in the league cup and once in the league.

He then returned to EPL2 which was the level he was playing at when he got injured.

He has been training with the 1st team for a while and Klopp has said that he plans to integrate him so ive no doubt that he will be a 1st team player however to say that he has been one so far is stretching it.

He’s played in 2 EPL games and 2 FA Cup. He’d need to have trained with the first team a fair bit to do that. Anyway come next summer he’ll be a full first team player for club and country, of that I’ve no doubt. He can make and score goals on his own and that’s probably the one thing we’ve been lacking. He’s 18 in November.

  15. I don’t think it’s correct to say Doak isn’t a Liverpool first team player. He was, then he got injured. I’m fairly sure he’ll be a Scotland player by the end of next season. There’s a chance he could be joined by Rory Wilson if he finds first team football. The two positions we need to reinforce probably have our two most promising players.

I hope you’re right but unless you count getting to League A in the Nations League the current team hasn’t really achieved anything yet.

Not having a go at anyone but I think I’ll wait to see if we can actually do something that previous teams have failed to do before I believe they are better than what has gone before.

Now if we go on to win our qualifying group and make an impact at the finals I’ll start to believe this is our best squad ever. If we end up qualifying in second place (or not at all) and then get knocked out at the group stage then it will be same old same old I’m afraid.

They haven’t really achieved anything yet. I said I had more faith in them (to be better than previous squads). They’re not there yet, but I have faith. I thought Clarke was far too cautious at the Euros but he seems to have learned from it and the squad is quite a bit stronger now.

There's far more teams in Europe now. There's far more teams in the world now.

Our qualifying group in 92 wasn't as hard as some of the groups we've had since.

If this team gets out the group stages it wlll indeed be a huge monkey off our back.

We can harp on about great teams of the past. Fact is, they shat the bed, sometimes to epic proportions time and time again.

I don't think we've ever had a united team, like we have currently. Boy's who'd run through brick walls for each other.

Squads in the 70s and 80s had great players but there was something not quite right there. I have much more confidence in this group of players than any other in my lifetime. I expect Doak, Lowry and Wilson to make them even better in the not too distant future.

Dunno i felt both him and smith really took the mickey. Both literally just took the job and then fucked off at the slightest better offer. They both just used it as stepping stone in the worst possible way.  Smith especially was dirty. To piss off in the middle of a campaign was dirty as fuck.

I think clarke has little more class to him and i wouldnt begrudge him leaving at the end of the euros in 2024. That would three campaigns hes had and thats a fair length of service imo.

Smith was quite clear there was only one offer that could have made him leave. Slagging off the dead and laughing about molesting women, it’s been some week for you.
