Doak needs to be playing at some level consistently to make the squad i think.

Agree to an extent, and that could well happen. A first team game every 3 weeks with u23 games to maintain fitness would be fine. We need a wild card.

Squad is far too heavy on attacking players.

Will be at least 1 if not 2 more defenders in there. For a variety of reasons. One being we will play 5 at the back, 2 being one of our defenders (Tierney) is very injury prone and 3 being that defenders are much more likely to get suspended.

I think he takes 3 strikers who will be Adams, Dykes and 1 other between Shankland, Brown, Nisbett

Personally I dont think Doak makes it as he would have to drop one of McGinn, Mactominay, Christie, Armstrong or Ferguson. (Thats bascially 5 players for 2 positions although McTom can play deeper).

Doak is in, that’s why there’s one fewer defender. Hickey and Tierney are versatile enough to shuffle around, plus if there is a crisis we can go to a back four or use McTominay. Doak salvages games or wins them in the last 15 minutes. At least that’s the plan. Let’s see how he does tonight against top class opposition.

  3. Important to note that Doak will be playing tonight for the u21s away v Belgium. Live on the Scotland National Team Youtube page. This is the sort of game for him to stake a claim for the Euros, along with the Nations League and the odd EPL game.

Yes I would take that but I don't see McCrorie making the squad ahead of Clark or Kelly whilst hew remains at Rangers playing no football. I would love to see Doak there but time is sort of running out.

I think McCrorie should go for the experience. We don’t need 3 keepers (but obliged to select them). Surely McCrorie won’t be at Rangers next season. Still time for Doak. It’s obvious we need to have the option of blistering pace off the bench. I’m sure Clarke would have put him on last night if he’d made the squad - much like he did with Shankland.

  5.

    23 man squad

    Gunn 1
    Gordon 2
    McCrorie 3
    Hickey 4
    Patterson 5
    Robertson 6
    Tierney 7
    Hendry 8
    Porteous 9
    McKenna 10
    Gilmour 11
    McGregor 12
    McTominay 13
    McGinn 14
    Armstrong 15
    McLean 16
    Ferguson 17
    Dykes 18
    Christie 19
    Adams 20
    Doak 21
    Brown 22
    Shankland 23

  6. Two games in a row McLean has been our best player. He gives good balance on the left and is a good all rounder.

Patterson was great going forward, and I’ve no fears about him especially with three at the back.He was at fault for second goal but that can be coached out of him.

Shankland should start on Sunday. A bit like Griffiths,  he’s done the hard work and now has a physique suitable for top level football.

As said, it would be good to have, but I think with Hickey we have someone that a lot of people just do not appreciate what we have with him (apparently Pep is a big fan of him and has made it known that as soon as it becomes known Hickey is available to buy, he wants first dibs on him, and apparently Bayern Munich are sniffing around as well).

If the long term plan for Hickey is to move him into a more central role and RCB, then Livramento becomes appealing, but for the moment its something that does not really suit both parties/

Not sure I follow your logic there. Hickey could play right back and Livramento right midfield. As was said, you can never have too many good players.

Apparently he has no shortage of options..... naturally England first of all, but he has links to Scotland, Ghana and Barbados through Grandparents.

Livramento is interesting to hear that we are actually following up on, but unless Hickey is out long term (ie the Euros) we are sorted in that position for the next 10-15 years with what we have already.

Apparently Livramento can play further forward, also.

  9. Archie Gray probably has the greatest Scottish pedigree out of any player out there in terms of family achievements. He looks a tremendous talent. The prospect of Gray and Gilmour in the same midfield is mouth watering, but it doesn’t look like it is going to happen.

I was speaking of best/worst (depending on viewpoint) scenario. Trying to shoehorn all three into the team/squad would displace team/squad regulars who have grafted hard to get us where we are. That would be certain to get backs up especially given media reports of Anderson's off-hand remarks whether true or not.

Footballers are grown men and know all about competition for places. I don’t think for a minute Clarke would let players walk into a side. If they show in training that they are clearly better than the competition then that is a different matter. Players can accept that. It’s a bit like when people complain when a 26 year old that always turns up for squads is overlooked for an 18 year old who is better and goes straight into the first 11 in his first squad. Harsh, but that’s the nature of the game.

I'd be all for starting an established club partnership if that's what happens with Adams and Stewart. Even if it's at the expense of Dykes who has done nothing wrong. The closest thing we have to a striker who can take a half chance is McTominay and if the goals come from midfield, I'm not bothered. I still think Jacob Brown should get some gametime in the next two qualifiers.

Clarke is loyal and I see the benefits of that but sometimes he can be too loyal.

Dykes takes half chances, he’s bailed us out on numerous occasions. McTominay would be fine as a second striker but not as a lead striker. He doesn’t have the hips for it with his back to goal.

Great comment and analysis. By the way, I see that Rhys McCabe is managing Airdrie now. Remember he was seen as a great prospect at Rangers. Wonder what went wrong?

Injury mainly, but he was a midfielder.

Perhaps mccoist wasn't used enough or maybe not used in the right way. He was a poacher and maybe seen as a luxury. Who knows.

McCoist was more than a poacher. Very strong on the ball, great with his back to goal and could link up play. Scored a fair few from outside the box as well.

I have high hopes for him as well, but it seems he is banging goals in mostly for Villa's u18s, rather than their u21s. Also, when he was included in the Scotland u21s last year, he was then papped back down to the u17s straight after (if memory serves). It's only the most recent games that he has gotten back in. He also isn't training regularly with the senior Aston Villa squad.

All of that would suggest his coaches don't think he is ready yet. I think we are far more likely to see Doak making an early breakthrough than Wilson.

That's a bit of a negative spin on it, but I'd say we should be focusing our immediate attention on Stewart, Conway or Nisbet.

I don’t think anyone is saying Wilson is ready yet. I’m fairly sure Villa want him to develop physically over the season as he gets older and then put him on loan next season.

I’d certainly put Doak in, as it’s a long way till June for a 17 year old and he’ll have improved by then. He’s already got the physique to play. He could make an impact as a sub at the Euros even though he’ll get way better in the years to come.

Unfortunately it doesn't look like we have anyone like that coming through

It’s hard to know when a player is coming through what they will be like, but I don’t remember anyone with a record as good as Rory Wilson, including McCoist and Johnston at the same age level. Early days at 17 and he’s not filled out yet, but I’ve got very high hopes for him.

  16. Jacob Brown looked good as a main striker, decent touch and a bit of pace. I thought Kenny McLean was our best player on the night, brave on the ball with an assured touch. We were sloppy at set pieces, for and against. That would kill us at a finals.

Yes, more disappointed with that than the A team in France. No real coherence and thought a few of the Malta boys should much better techniques which is worrying. Thought Barron looked like a cross between Barry Bannan and Billy Bremner and hopefully kick on from there. apart from the goal Bowie did not do very much and thought both full / wing backs did well. As someone says above Lowry has got to choose when he wants to beat 5 players, wont work every time. A win is a win.

Lowry needs to fill out a bit more, which will help him beat 5 players. I agree though, a simple lay off is often the best option. I do think he’ll make the full team. He wasn’t at his best last night but he has an ability to inoculate defences that is rare in football.

  18. I think the OP squad is more or less correct, with Doak replacing Jacob Brown from the current set up.

I would like to see Gauld given a chance, certainly over Anderson. I’m very confident Gauld would have controlled and scored from that through ball McGinn played to Christie versus Spain. The thing with Gauld is he’s physically much stronger than when he was last in Scotland. His stats are off the charts in the MLS. He might have a chance if he moves to Europe in January.

I would imagine Max Johnston will also be in with a shout.

I really hope not, I hope he turns into a top passing centre back. If he moves into midfield he’ll probably be good, but I’ve seen nothing from him that screams elite level midfielder. I’ve seen plenty that makes me think he could be elite as a centre back. Being utterly selfish, Scotland doesn’t need more midfielders but very much needs some top centre backs.

I hear what you’re saying but I’ve been extremely impressed with him in midfield. I’m not convinced he’s quite tall enough to be a really top tier centre back (in a back four anyway), but his physicality could be great in midfield. He looks completely unhurried in that position which is always a good sign - strolls it.

Anybody know the team and formation? And is Kieron Bowie a centre forward? If so we might have another prospect to add to Conway.

I think it was 3-5-1-1 with Doak behind Bowie up front.

Apparently Clarke was at the game and when Doak was subbed off, he just left. If true, that is pretty telling.

I'm going to assume the France game has come too soon for him, but Clarke will surely have been impressed enough to consider him for the next set of matches. Especially if we have already qualified.

That seems odd, unless he was catching a flight.

Was pleased with Gemmil finally playing the same formation as the A team.

Thought Doak was exciting and played well but probably enough bits on show to understand why he isnt quite in main squad yet.

Overall pleased with how comfortable all our players look on the ball. Really like the look of Barron. Not seen that much of him but he impressed me when he came on in Aberdeens last euro match.

King played well in holding role aswell. How he isnt deemed good enough to play for Rangers is beyond me.

Silly sending off from Johnstone at the end but he will learn from it.

I was a bit worried about King, but I now think he’ll be a top midfield player. He really makes the game look easy. He needs to keep playing in central midfield.

Another fuck up by VAR is one I have said for a while would happen. The offside flag goes up way too late and as a result there was a serious injury to Andy Robertson. Had that flag gone up straight away there would have been no contesting for the ball between Robertson and the keeper.

The keeper deliberately left one on him and should have been a red card.
