  1. Wotte or anything he was part of putting in place will have had next to no influence on the players currently coming through.

He instilled best v best games for the years just above performance schools and hand picked the coaches. The selection of those players was based on ability rather than durability, hence some of the tiny players turning out for the Victory Shield. It's true that we are waiting on the generation that have gone right through the new system, but I expect good results.

  2. This.

On Sportsound last night, this point was brought up, asking why so many had left a well paid, full time coaching job with the SFA to go to part time lower division clubs. The inference was that Wotte was a self important, arrogant person.

Perhaps Wotte pulled a chronically underachieving collection of nepotistic know it alls out of their comfort zone and they didnae like it? I've noticed our youth players can now trap a ball, which they definitely couldn't 5 years ago.

  3. A more effective player means a better all round one and to me that is nonsense but sure what can ya do....

One question for ya, what english division would you say the spl is the equivalent to at the moment, championship?

League 1 but most of our international players play in the premiership. SPL still miles ahead of the Irish league.

  4. Strachan said at his first Q&A that we just do not create the chances for our strikers.... he mentioned the bigger nations have the system in place that 1 chance can equal 1 goal, whereas we have to be putting in 50+ chances into the box for our strikers to get on the end of to create one goal.

That was over a year ago he said that, and I think things are starting to click into place that the goals will come.

Problem is, Strachans style is defend from the front almost..... look at Griffiths in Zagreb, he wasn't put there to score goals, but just get stuck in to the Croatians and chase after every ball to keep it up the park.

This has continues somewhat under Fletcher, as he just seems to be failing to get himself into scoring chances, yet holding the ball up to create chances for others.

I do not think Strachan will turn us into a team who will beat teams 3/4-0, but got us playing in a way that we make all our goals count when it matters at the end of 90 minutes.

The current system is a lot more sophisticated than the one Kenny Miller had to slog his guts out for.

  5. If he was played in an advanced role it wouldn't be the worst thing. He's got goals and assists in his game. If a loose ball fell at the edge of the box, he's the one you want on the end of it. We could have done with his corners in the last two games. That said, he's got work to do to get back in.

  6. Mulgrew will be needed for the Ireland games. We need good deliveries and a bit of brawn. He's not the best we have from open play but these will be 100 mile an hour and could come down to set pieces.

  7. I've never seen Hampden so subdued as on that day.

Next month's game against Ireland is obviously massively important, but a defeat wouldn't be a total disaster. It would, however, mean we'd need a minimum of 4 points from the two remaining games against Poland and Ireland, as well as probably needing to take all 3 in Tibilisi. Tough, but by no means impossible.

I think we'd need more than that.

  8. I thought Scott Brown was honestly outstanding on Saturday. After Morrison getting booked earlier on I think he had to do most of the digging in midfield, which he did tirelessly. I think he'll be one of our most important men on the field tomorrow. Also have to give a mention to Andrew Robertson, how good is this young lads delivery?! Apart from his error at the end he had a great game too.

The only changes I'd make would be Bannan for Maloney, as I thought wee Barry Bannan played well in Germany and we'll need a similar performance tomorrow. Hutton and Maloney didn't link up well on Saturday in my opinion, looking down on the game from Copland Rear I think they were slow to go forward at times. I'd also put Darren Fletcher on for Steven Fletcher, to put another body in the middle of the park and push Naismith up top on his own.

I think S.Fletcher links up play superbly and holds the ball up well for us which is why it's hard to drop him. But he was blowing out his hoop after 65 minutes on Saturday and we can't afford to have any passengers.

Huge match, in Gord we trust!

Play him for 65 mins then!

  9. Totally agree.S.Fletcher a bit of a luxury we can't afford to start off with.

Don't agree. Fletcher can hold the ball up and has the touch and awareness to exploit space. Naismith will be a lot better with a bit more room. Better delivery from set pieces required though - so possibly Bannan for Maloney.

  10. These games are always awkward. We were miles better than them and they set out not to lose. I actually fancy we'll score a couple of goals in Poland. We're playing the right way and with a bit more room, the goals will glow. Fletcher is top class and maybe just lacking a bit of sharpness in front of goal, which will come soon enough.. I'm delighted we've got a player of his talent.

  11. Looks like May has made a big impression on WGS this week, just been bigging him up in the News Conference. Great option off the bench, Dorrans in for Bannan for me but much the same as above otherwise, think week in week out so far this season he's been very good for WBA by all accounts

Dorrans could be good for a home game. When he hits top form he's a match winner. Not as careful in possession as Bannan though.

  12. Can't say I rate Forest mate. Granted I don't watch him often but my Celtic supporting mates certainly don't rate him that highly and he has done little in a Scotland shirt to date. Strachan likes him though so he will make squads and I'll be delighted to see him prove me wrong.

A fully fit Snodgrass would be in there, no question. Out of interest who would you drop for him? Bannan would be the obvious choice but it then means shunting someone out wide. Morrison for me. Good to have these sort of headaches for a change.

    haha aye fair one mate.

as you say lets get wired in :ok:[/quote

Probably Bannan but I rate him too. Prefer Snodgrass through the middle but I think Naismith will play there as it's his best position. We do have a lot of options and good players at the moment. I hope it can be converted to points. As you say, intae them!

  13. This would be my team but with Morrison in for Darren Fletcher.

Don't agree with Davied14. Naismith played his best football Rangers when in behind Jelavic. I agree he can be effective from wide right but Bannan deserves to play after Germany, as does S. Fletcher.

Either way this team is just about as strong as we have got at the moment.

    Come on!!!!!

Apart from Snodgrass who would start, and a functional Forrest, who would certainly make the squad.

  14. This is what I'd like to see as starting line up. If Snoddy was fit he'd be in where you have Dorrans.

As for Strachans selection I think it will be close to above but Right midfield is up for debate. I think it's more likely to be Morrison or Bannan in that position..... Strachan seems to always squeeze Bannan into the team so I would say Bannan at right of 3 behind Fletcher is most likely what we will see.

Am I one of the only people who seems to think Bannan rarely brings much to the side? Sure he can pass it 5-10 yards and is good for ball retention but most of our midfield players can do that. He also is very guilty of failing to beat the first defender when crossing, taking a corner or free kick. Yet to be convinced.

I'd be happy with Dorrans or Bannan. Yes, all players can pass the ball 5-10 yards, but not all of them can pass it to a team mate while being closed down by two of the opposition. That's why Bannan gets a game. Simple as that.
