Entertaining game. I thought Doak along with Cannonier were the stand outs. I'm not sure any of the Rangers players really stood out except Lovelace and unfortunately he's English.

Well at least there is King and Lowry who would have been eligible, as far as I know. I quite like the look of Ure but time will tell. Only saw the Doak moments via Twitter.

  2. Biden talking up the dangers (rightly) and I think this may be to prepare the way for a negotiated settlement. He talked about “looking for an off ramp” for Putin. The West won’t be too bothered if Ukraine loses ground as long as it isn’t a strategic problem (for the West). Ukraine haven’t got much leverage because if the weapons (and ammo) dry up, Russia will eventually prevail. I think some kind of neutral, demilitarised  status for the Donbas and Crimea is most likely. Some kind of schengen arrangement. Putin would come up with an excuse to save face and declare it as some kind of victory. The Black Sea fleet would probably have to go elsewhere though. The alternatives are not good especially if Russia is facing defeat in Crimea, that along with the potential destruction of the Black Sea fleet by Ukraine is where the nukes would most likely come in.

I said at the last squad I'd have King in the squad as a 6th choice CB. No need for him to play but he will learn a lot playing and training with top players. Also integrates him early into the squad and get used to everything and everyone.

I think he’d be better off actually playing for the u21s than not playing for the first team. He played last night because Rangers played with a back three and Sands was suspended. He is still being used fairly sporadically in the Rangers first team, so getting games for the u21s would be good for him.

Unless the last 3 Scotland games have been flukes, Hendry would be more than capable of playing in the EPL. I’m not saying he’s going to end up at Liverpool or Man City or anything like that but would he look out of place playing for Southampton or Leeds for example?

He looks to me to be a better player than Liam Cooper.

I think a lot of clubs from the EPL and beyond will have taken note of Hendry’s recent performances for us. He will be in demand in January. Pace is a prerequisite for a defender at top clubs. Add to that his height, technique, competitive qualities and self-confidence, I think he joins a fairly short list.

Lowry will be a "nailed on starter" and "star player" for Scotland by the 2024 Euros? Do you seriously have that much confidence in him that you are certain he'll be playing ahead of 2 of McGinn, Christie, Armstrong or Fraser? Not to mention finding a way to get ahead of the likes of Turnbull in the pecking order.

I mean, I absolutely hope you are right. But that is a bold prediction.

    100%

  6. Apart from goalkeeper, everything looks fine. The current strikers will still be around and hopefully better ones will emerge (perhaps Rory Wilson).

Armstrong will still be fine at 33 and McGregor at 32, but they’ll have Lowry and Gilmour to compete with and possibly Cole McKinnon, Connor Smith and Chris Mochrie, to name a few.

I'll probably get shot down for this but Colin Hendry wasn't some Beckenbauer figure. He was fairly limited. He was blood and guts and had flowing locks but there's some amount of revisionism to portray him as a colossus.

As much as I respect his contribution for us, the above is true. Blackburn played quite industrial football and he was a player who could clear his lines and dominate the box. He didn’t have pace or particularly good technique, and wasn’t as good as Gough, for example. I wouldn’t swap him for Jack.

When did we lose to Ireland 4-0?

I can remember the great trams you talk about getting scudded 5-0 away , drawing with an utter hopeless Estonia side,

Football has changed massively since the 90s. The standard that our EPL players are playing in now is at a higher level.

Agree. Even the mid 80s teams got some doings and under performed on a fairly frequent basis, although undoubtedly we had some tremendous players then (including the three I mention).

Your suggesting that this squad is better than the late 80s and 90s?

92 we had mccoist, mcclair as strikers. One was prolific for man utd and the other was winning the golden boot and scoring insane amounts of goals. We even had guys like john spencer, mo johnston and kevin gallacher around those years. I am not wanting to run through the squads in massive detail but these days we rely on guys who cant even score in the english championship and adams has never scored more than 10 in the epl.

I know we are all happy and excited by our progress recently but its a long way to go before we have squads as strong as our ones in the late 80s early 90s.

Not even sure our current squads are better than the 98/96 ones.

In terms of overall squad depth, best since the mid 80s. Of course many players since then would get in the current first 11.

Lol steady on. This is probably our best squad since 96/98. Its a very long way off our squads of the late 80s and even early 90s.

It has potential to surpass the early 90s imo but the late 80s we had strikers who played for man utd and barca. Even mccoist couldnt get a game at times and he banging in 40 a season.

The 96 and 98 squads are probably of similar standard imo. Ppl forget we had two excellent centre backs one of which was instrumental in blackburn winning the league. Collins who played for a brilliant monaco side and lambert with dortmund. Gary mccalister won the league with leeds and was one of the best centre mids in the epl.

I am loving this squad but its still quite weak in areas. Especially strikers and goalkeepers.

“Best since” means best of those that came after the “since”. So about 1985 or there abouts. If we had Dalglish and Johnston up front now…

I’m well aware of the players we had in the 90s and I’m also aware of the variable squad depths of those days.

Really hope cremonese give him a proper chance as he was building a decent career in belgium up until recently. Hes a guy that will improve with more experience, just hope he can get serie a experience this season and wont stagnate on the bench. His ability to stride out from defence with the ball is excellent and hes really been rock solid defensively in these games.

Hes definitely put himself at the top of the centre back pecking order. I would say him and mckenna deserve the centre back positions for right now but obviously as we know that can all change pretty quickly.

I’d go with Hendry and McKenna as it gives us a high line with their pace. Porteous was great though and Souttar, if he can get himself fit, is also a very good player.

  12. Hendry took a lot of stick on here during his Celtic days and was ridiculed by some. His potential was always clear enough and it would seem he’s now fulfilling it. He was different class these last three games.
He has unbelievable pace, very good technique, good in the air, can bring the ball out of defence and he shouts and organises. If he gets a full season of games in Italy his transfer value will become very high indeed.

  13. Clarke is doing a good job, although I’m not convinced he would have changed formation without the injuries. No complaints about the way he set out the team, and the players seem to like and respect him.

This is probably the best squad of players we’ve had since the days of Dalglish, Johnston and Cooper up front, or at least it soon will be. Striker is the main problem, and keeper is the looming one. Other than that, it’s top class and we have the likes of Lowry, Doak and Morrison on the horizon plus a few others.

i think we are now at a point where we are looking at a back 4 with eiher tierney or Robertson.  We don’t really play a left midfielder as such.

We could play 4-2-3-1 with Tierney in the 2 or the 3. Some tough decisions to be made. The alternative is to drop Robertson.

  15. We may end up with Tierney and Hickey in midfield. Alternatively, we’ll just be like big nations and have great players on the bench. Patterson is currently more of an attacking threat from RB. Hickey, like Tierney, could play just about anywhere. Having a two footed player in central midfield would allow for very quick switches of play and counterattacks, and more effective tackling.

  16. What garish monstrosities are en vogue these days? I don’t see the problem with the top - it’s classic style with a few wee touches here and there. Much better than the weird squiggly horizontal lines on the last one.

I agree with on both points.

I concede he's not everyone's cup of tea (including a number of managers 😉  ).  But I personally would have liked to have seen him in the squad. And have a hunch he could have put in a shift in what will likely be a counterattacking game on Tuesday. Plus I worry that Che Adams and  Dykes might not have enough left in the tank to play the single striker role on Tuesday? I hope I'm wrong.

For the future, I'm hoping Oliver Burke will kick on at Werder Bremen. I'd be happy to see him in future squads. As 'er yir macaroon' says, he brings something a wee bit different to our other striker options.

Most players improve with experience and I’m optimistic he’ll be worth the effort. Even now opposition defences will be forced to adjust their position if he’s on the pitch.

Taylor didn't do a bad job when he came on. It's unreal to think the depth of our squad now has two celtic full backs as third choice for Scotland.

Why are you amazed a player who has had an average career is not in the squad? He's also not started for his current club yet.

Because he brings something  we don’t otherwise have. Two goals in the Bundesliga is also not bad for September.

I was thinking the same. This game could be tailor made for him: I suspect we might defend a wee bit deeper than usual and look to hit on the break?  Saw a couple of games when Burke played a similar role for Alaves and he suprised me how good he was at doing it (e.g. using his pace and stamina to press the keeper and any centre back not on their toes).

I’m amazed Burke isn’t in the squad. Get him called up.
