The only issue is finding a way to fit the best players in the team.

    Marshall

    McTominay    Cooper     Tierney

    Forrest     McGregor     Armstrong   Robertson

    McGinn     Dykes     Fraser

    What are you worried about?

That line up is a possibility but there’s no chance Armstrong would play behind McGinn if you’re not playing Jack too.

Yeah. I'm watching it. Hopefully the injury isn't too bad.

Shinnie has been the best midfielder on show in the first half. Solid in the challenge and I can't remember him losing possession.

Good player but not good enough for our squad without a few injuries. Same as Fulton and Bannan.

However, Clarke today did allude to the concern we all have that he will be loyal to the players that got us there. He is probably just keeping his cards close to his chest, but it could mean players like Turnbull and Gauld might miss out.

Yeah I did find that a little concerning.

Obviously he needs to strike a balance  between loyalty and including in-form players.

But we all need to remember that our form isn’t THAT good and that the ‘players that got us here’ were also guys that played under Alex McLeish in the previous nations league.

Steve Clarke’s record for qualifying for the Euros was a 0-0 home draw against Israel, barely creating an open play chance and a good performance against Serbia (but still a draw). We then followed that up with losses against Slovakia and Israel.

There’s no need to be loyal to players that played poorly/adequately in these games particularly if their club form isn’t special.

It may turn out to be true but Tancredi Palmeri is an utter spoofer who talks some amount of guff.

I don't think he has any serious contacts in the game to have the inside track on that sort of info. Until any other serious journalists/outlets start spreading that info I'd take it with a massive pinch of salt.

I was about to say...isn’t this guy known for speaking shite on Twitter.

You do realise these are WC qualifiers? Clarke will have to play his strongest eleven in each game.

It’s WC qualifiers but it’s 3 games in 6 days in an already congested season. One of the games is against Faroes at home.

There’s no way it’ll be the same team in all 3 games. He needs to rest a few of them. Plus he needs to see who can replace McTominay at the back. Clarke might want to keep the team consistent in the first game but I’m sure he’ll change it against Israel and Faroes. Maybe make one change for Israel to get McTominay in midfield. Then a new back 3 against the Faroes.

    Austria: Tierney Gallagher McTominay

    Israel: Tierney Hanley Gallagher?

    Faroes: Cooper McKenna Hendry

People touting Hanley for a spot, have you actually watched him?

He’s a big heed to replace Gallagher rather than McTominay.

People also touting Cooper has central centre back. For me he’s more suited to the left centre back role. He’s a rotation option for Tierney.

I’d say these are the centre back options are for each position (assuming we continue as a back 3).

    LCB: Tierney, Cooper

    CCB: Hanley, McKenna, Gallagher

    RCB: McTominay, Hendry, Palmer

Ideally you play McTominay in midfield so is cover for RCB only. And Palmer and Tierney are already in the squad to cover wing back positions.

For the March squad I’d call them all up and play them all. You’d probably only drop 1 of them for a 23 man squad in the summer.

Guys like Porteous and Considine miss out but could come in if there’s injuries.

McBurnie should be about 8th choice striker IMO

Doesnt take much to go from 8th choice to one of the best options though.

Shankland can show he can do it against a high level of opposition tomorrow too. Although he's probably going to have to rely on his teammates to give him a chance.

    Ah.

Are you sure about that, though? The once thing.

Young Dembele has switched between Scotland and England three times. I think the previous rule limit four times, at youth level, so, Dembele's next switch wouldve locked him in.

I think the new amendment has cancelled out the previous switching rule. I could be wrong, though.

Yeah FIFA mention switching association only once in 9.1 of this https://resources.fifa.com/image/upload/commentary-on-the-rules-governing-eligibility-to-participate-for-representative-.pdf?cloudid=ro8mje8vw98yp3rvfbmi

Although it's not immediately clear when you officially 'switch association'...i.e. is it just at senior level or does it count as a switch at age group levels.

The Dembele thing is where I read about this initially I'm sure. He was OK to switch back and forth because it has at under 15/16/17 level. But once he gets to under 19 level (I think) then it's an official switch because he would be playing competitive UEFA qualifiers.

Someone maybe told me on here? Maybe it has been superseded by the new amendment though.

    Thanks

I saw one interview where he said he was proud about representing Scotland but I won't get my hopes up yet.

Yeah and he's been involved for a decent amount of time, hoping he's made his choice. His name sounds Italian...he's Englishness his maybe diluted by that too. Might make it easier to pick Scotland.

  9. 2 hours ago, Taylor1996 said:

    No.

The new rules state that even if he played 3 senior matches for England, before he reaches 21 years of age, he would still be able to switch.l to Scotland.

    https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/54211943

That’s a different rule I think. That’s taking about allowing players to switch countries even after playing senior games, but not switching association twice.

He could play for England even after playing 3 senior games for Scotland but after making that switch to England he couldn’t then switch back to Scotland.

It’s the switching back and forth part I am talking about.

You’re only allowed to change your association once. At the moment Fiorini’s association is Scotland (even if it’s not at senior level) so would require a 2 switches to go to England and then back to Scotland.

    That’s my understanding anyway.

    Grandmother he never met.

Represented England u15s then switched to Scotland and has been with us up to u21 level.

    Born and raised in England

Can he still change his mind like rice from West ham did recently?

He can switch to England. If he plays for England in an under 21s game he wont be able to switch back to Scotland.

You're only allowed to switch once once you get to under 19 level as far as I'm aware.

Pity Nathan Patterson decided to be an idiot and get himself suspended. Just when Tavernier will be out for a while. Big opportunity missed.

Gerrard might need to play Ryan Jack as a right back. Could me interesting for Scotland if he does and plays well.

Mcintyre keeping a clean sheet so far for reading.

He seems really promising. Might have a chance to get in the March squad if there’s 1 or 2 injuries. Probably a guy Clarke will want to look at.

Noticed that McKenna is injured, not sure when he’s back.

Not to bring up the foot debate again, as. I. Just. Don't. Care.

Watching the Arsenal vs Leeds match.  Smith Rowe (right footed), played on the left and Saka (left footed) played on the right. Arsenal's left back, Soares, is right footed. Also, Stuart Armstrong has been playing mainly on the left a lot this season.

Some people underestimate football players and simply do not understand football.

    On topic.

Another strong performance by Scott McTominay. Too bad their two centre backs are too easy to bully.

I think most posters know what Taylor1996 is like but I just want to point out what he's done here incase anyone thinks that he's being treated unfairly (like he does).

His initial post suggested playing Fleck at RWB, he then took this back when he reaslied that he was left footed. Showing a preference of playing a right footer at RWB.

He then suggested McGregor could play there, again not realising he was left footed despite him having 26 caps for Scotland.

He then argued that he cant tell a players preference of foot because he is watching the ball instead.

And also changed his mind about wing backs playing on their opposite side. Trying to change the argument to suit him.

Also note, after watching this game that he's now able to determine the favoured foot of random Arsenal players despite him not being able to do this with Scotland payers.

For what its worth I don't mind wing backs playing on the side of their weaker foot. I'd like to see Tierney play RWB, ideally in a friendly first.

He'll probably still be in "recovery" mode for our next set of games.

I reckon if he’s fit arsenal will ask that he doesn’t play in all 3 games. He’s only been injured a month, so that’s the least I’d expect.

Same for Robertson, he’s playing in 3/4 of our games.

Means that they’ll only play together once if you want at least one of them playing in each game.

Or play neither against the Faroes...so probably will mean Taylor will be called up.

The only way I can see Taylor making the final cut is if one of the other left-backs gets injured, and even then Hickey might be preferred due to his versatility (he can also play right-back).

I notice Tierney hasn't featured at all for Arsenal these past few weeks though, I take it he's injured?

Yeah, been injured. Meant to be back in the next couple of weeks.

  16. I think Taylor could only be picked for the Euros if one of Robertson or Tierney are injured. He’s not flexible enough to play other positions, someone like Palmer is far more useful.

He might get picked for the qualifiers but agree, would prefer someone like Turnbull or Gauld or Hendry to take a squad place.

I think I read that it was unlikely because of travel ban between Portugal and UK due to covid

Yeah, don’t think he’ll be able to meet the squad in Scotland.

Think they’d have to call him up for the Israel away game only and meet him there the day before. Seems very unlikely.

Unless Portugal are removed from the red list/the government change the rule for sportsmen.

I am by no means a rangers fan but rangers play some nice football these days and it wouldn't be the worst choice for him. Chance to win medals and play in champs league/europa league. Probably get a better wage at rangers than at alot of other clubs.

    You're probably right.

Would just be more exciting if he played elsewhere.

Sorry, but what are Rangers paying these days.

    More than Braga I'd imagine.

I think Celtic/Rangers can compete with mid-low table Spanish and Italian clubs. So it might end up being one of his options.

You'd think an English team would be interested too though...and thats where Championship clubs can outspend the Old Firm.

Ryan Gauld out of contract in the summer and many clubs interested in him including, according to reports in Portugal, his former club Sporting Lisbon

Hope he doesn’t go back there. They treated him terribly, cutting short a loan spell out of spite and didn’t seem to get enough of a chance with their A team.

    Hopefully not Rangers either.

    Playing in Europe suits him.

Braga would be good but he’s maybe a bit more ambitious than that. Would probably mean he gets first team football but he’s now peaking and should want to play for the best possible team.

Maybe there will be Spanish or Italian clubs interested if he doesn’t stay in Portugal.

  20. I was trying to bite my lip on this but it too hard not to...

Not knowing that a guy like McGregor who has 26 caps for Scotland isn’t right footed is very surprising.  Everything he does is with his left foot. Stating that you’re looking at the ball instead is a bizarre excuse. It’s fine not to know, I don’t think anyone is claiming you’re not a fan because you didn’t know.

But...arrogantly stating that Scotland qualified for the Euros because of a formation, and hadn’t qualified previously due to playing a back 4 is weird and shows a lack of understanding. There are so many reasons that we qualified this time around (one of them could have been due to the change of formation). Other (and probably stronger) reasons why we qualified are...better players, better coaches, easier qualifying route, luck on the day, and an effective system and style understood by the players (unrelated to the formation).

This is all simple correlation not equaling causation. You can’t say that Scotland were robbed of previous tournaments because we played a back 4.

You really need to reign it in on the formation thing. There’s no need to continuously bring it up. It’s been done to death, we’re are actually playing in a back 3 now, and there doesn’t seem to be any arguments about changing back anytime soon.

Anyway, that McTominay guy is a good player.

There is an exemption for professional sports - which is why Celtic were able to go to Dubai and return without quarantining.  Of course 13 players and two of the staff had to self isolate but that was because they'd been identified as a close contact of a positive case.

No I think that Portugal specifically is in a higher risk category. Elite sports people need to quarantine after coming back to the UK.

They’re trying to make arrangements for Arsenal to play Benfica at a neutral venue.

Scotland’s Women are going to play the Portugal away game in Cyprus.
