I disagree to a large degree. The last double header really was about regaining some momentum with wins and you do that fielding your best team which ours would always include the likes of McGinn. If we had gone into that double header in fine form then yes by all means experiment but we were a long way off that.

Fair enough, respect your opinion. Although, we should have won that game with or without McGinn, and helping someone like Ferguson integrate with the team benefits the whole squad. McGinn is going to end up being one of the most played players in Europe by the end of the season.

Clarke can't predict the future. You reckon he should have called heaps of players that had never been capped for the last 4 or 5 games?

It's important to build a team that has a bit of continuity international football and chopping and changing it with loads of new players isn't a good idea imo.

We all wanted him to give Ferguson and shankland a chance which is what he did.

It's all very well looking back with hindsight now that we have loads of injuries.

He could predict that there would potentially be injuries at the end of a season.

He always picks small squads and doesn’t always replace players that pull out. I get that he wants a tight knit squad but one or two additions would have helped.

He also doesn’t tend to give newer players a chance, eg not starting Ferguson against Northern Ireland. Playing McGinn against them had little benefit, imagine it was him that was injured instead of Ferguson.

Should have been looking towards the future in the last seven friendlies and dead rubbers not at the finals of a major tournament.

Yeah this seems like a pretty obvious mistake from Clarke. Maybe he would have called up more if he knew it would have been a 26 man squad though?

Ok then, he wouldn't have the number of assists over here that he gets in America.

He's 29 this year. No Scotland manager has ever capped him. It's not solely Steve Clarke that hasn't called him up . He might get in the squad now due to injuries/bigger squad but i'd rather go with Forrest personally as he's got experience at this level, both for club and country and is hitting form. Gauld has neither experience at ether club or country at this level.

Good luck to him if he gets called up, as with any player.

IF we are going to take a punt on a completely leftfield player, i'd rather take a chance on a younger player like Connor Barron. Doak wouldn't have been nailed on in a 26 man squad.

He didn’t deserve to be capped before Steve Clarke was manager. He’s been worth a few caps from 2020 onwards. Even then, Strachan did call him up (assume for experience) in 2014, but didn’t cap him.

Im also only suggesting him as part of a 26 man squad with injuries or for friendlies/low risk games with the potential to integrate him in. 28 is definitely still young enough to bring someone in (someone like Hartley is a good example of an older call up).

I’d also agree that Barron is a good shout and potentially Doak if he was fit.

Wouldn’t like to see someone like Ryan Jack called up as a squad player instead of Barron for example.

The standard of the defending is brutal. I'd stick my mortgage on Gauld getting nowhere near the goals over here that he gets currently.

He scored 8 in 38 games as an 18 year old in Scotland. He scored 12 last season and 8 the season before so your mortgage wouldn’t be very safe.

Regardless, he’s an attacking midfielder who shouldn’t be judged by the number of goals that he scores.

  6. I think there’s far more of chance of him picking Turnbull, Forrest and possibly Ryan Jack (if he’s fit) as replacement/additional midfielders rather than Gauld.

Although I think he will pick Tommy Conway considering he asked him to train with the senior team previously.

Clarke loves to be loyal to keep the club mentality. Can only see Gauld being a popular call up with the players though, he was childhood mates with Souttar and was close to Robertson (and Armstrong?) at Dundee United. He must have played under 21s with a lot of the current squad too.

I can’t imagine call ups for Elliot Anderson or Ryan Fraser being popular due to issues with their last call ups. Or Cairney as a 33 year old with patchy form or Turnbull with almost no form.

I agree,  Fraser ,Gauld , Morgan & Cairney are all good shouts . Would be even happier if Ross Stewart or especially Doak could get some first team action & make it. Turnbull not though, hasn't done anywhere near enough in recent times to deserve it.

Anyone any news on McTominay ?

Ten Hag’s quote after the game was:

We have to assess this, to set the diagnosis," said Ten Hag. "I don't know in this moment to return [against Crystal Palace next month], I think it's a little bit too quick turnaround.

"You have seen he has a problem. We have to diagnose this and see what it is."

So it wasn’t instant, bad news. But could easily be after he’s been assessed.

Both gauld and Morgan must be in with a shout for the squad now that it's 26 and we are potentially missing three attacking midfielders in Armstrong, mctominay and Ferguson.

Never know these guys plus Fraser might turn up to the euros and do really well. Feels the squad needs a wee shake up after the recent bad results.

I think Fraser has a strong chance, although he’s not been starting for Southampton recently (apart from this weekend) or assisting/scoring.

Not sure if there’s any lingering hostility between him and Clarke too.

Turnbull doesn't have the energy toget about the park efficiently. Be better bringing in someone like Miller from Motherwelll

Yeah he always looks classy on the ball but doesn’t seem to be a Steve Clarke type player.

Lewis Morgan scored again for New York Red Bulls last night. Has to be in with a shout of a squad place. I think Clarke has selected before whilst he wasn’t playing well for Celtic.

Seems like Gauld played well against him too.

  10. Good to see Tommy Conway score again, albeit another penalty. I think he's got a good chance of being in the squad in the summer.

Karamoko Dembele finished the season with another goal too. 9 goals and 14 assists from a number 10 type position is pretty good. Hoping that Steve Clarke has word with him and lets him know if he continues that form at a higher level, he'll likely be in our full team next season.

  11. Given that it’s a 26 man squad like the last Euros, here’s the previous squad and who is likely to replace them. The ones in italics are ‘dropped’ and the ones in bold are their replacement.
Numbers are my guess of % chances of going if they’re fully fit. Shows the few that are in danger and the one place that’s anyone’s atm.

    Goalkeepers

    Craig Gordon 100
    David Marshall Angus Gunn 100
    Jon McLaughlin Zander Clarke 95

    Defenders

    Liam Cooper 75
    Declan Gallagher John Souttar 95
    Grant Hanley Ryan Porteous 95
    Jack Hendry 100
    Scott McKenna 95

    Stephen O’Donnell Tony Ralston 75
    Nathan Patterson Aaron Hickey 100
    Andy Robertson 100
    Kieran Tierney 100
    Greg Taylor 95

    Midfielders
    Stuart Armstrong 100
    Billy Gilmour 100

    John Fleck Kenny McLean 100
    Callum McGregor 100
    Scott McTominay 100
    John McGinn 100

David Turnbull no idea who will replace him, he might just do something boring like pick McCrorie rather than attacking midfielder or stick with Turnbull

    Ryan Fraser 50
    Ryan Christie 100

    Forwards
    Ché Adams 100
    Lyndon Dykes 100

    Kevin Nisbet Lawrence Shankland 100

    James Forrest Tommy Conway 50

  12. In our last squad of 25 he picked 4 goalies and 1 too many centre backs, I think knowing that Hanley was injured.

Since then Paterson, Ferguson and Armstrong are ruled out, McGregor is apparently fit and Hickey is hoping to be fit. So he’ll likely drop Kelly and Hanley to make it 23, swap McGregor for Ferguson and call up an attacking midfielder to replace Armstrong. I think this will likely be Fraser who Clarke knows and has played ok this season.

So using that squad as a template it’ll be:

Goalkeepers: Zander Clark, Craig Gordon (both Hearts), Angus Gunn (Norwich)

Defenders: Liam Cooper (Leeds), Jack Hendry (Al-Ettifaq), Scott McKenna (Copenhagen), Ryan Porteous (Watford), Anthony Ralston (Celtic), Andy Robertson (Liverpool), John Souttar (Rangers), Greg Taylor (Celtic), Kieran Tierney (Real Sociedad), Aaron Hickey

Midfielders: Ryan Christie (Bournemouth), Billy Gilmour (Brighton), John McGinn (Aston Villa), Kenny McLean (Norwich), Scott McTominay (Manchester United), Callum McGregor, Ryan Fraser

Forwards: Che Adams (Southampton), Lyndon Dykes (QPR), Lawrence Shankland (Hearts)

Only player in danger is Ralston due to lack of minutes.

If it’s a 26 man squad he’ll probably just pick an extra defender, a central midfielder and a striker/winger

Probably Max Johnston or McCrorie as a RWB.

Not too sure on the midfielder. He’s liked Turnbull before, Jack might be fit or he might try to tempt Anderson again. Gauld would be my pick.

Not sure on the striker/winger either. He’s liked McBurnie in the past or he might be rogue and pick Doak, but Forrest is more likely.

Gauld, Morgan, Turnbull, Doak (if playing) all y'all need to make a statement in the next month with your playing and social media that you can answer your nations call.

Morgan is a shout but maybe as an additional striker if it’s a 26 man squad.

Still not convinced that Callum McGregor isn’t just playing through an injury for Celtic too.

Wondering what other attacking midfielders he’s called up before who could replace Armstrong and Ferguson.

    Turnbull, Fraser and Forrest?!

Forrest looked lively off the bench today and I guess he could do similar job for Scotland.

He’ll possibly go for Anderson again, and it could open the door for Doak.

Personally would like Gauld but he’s probably still behind the 4/5 above according to Clarke.

Tom cairney another consideration. Would be odd to pick a 33 year old squad player that’s never been selected by Clarke before(?) though.

Adams is hitting good form right now! 👍🏼

He actually has a better goals/minute ratio than Shankland this season, without any pens. Would have scored 20+ if he had the game time.

Should be our starting striker IMO. Wouldn't mind a way of playing both Shankland and Adams together either.

  17. To add to the good news it looks like Tierney is no longer Real Sociedad’s first choice left back. Didn’t get off the bench at the weekend.

He’s less likely to be overplayed and injured I suppose. But he could do with a couple of starts over the next month.

The point is those touted have shown no interest at all and, in all honesty, why should they? Born in England, raised in England with an English culture, with English mates (presumably) and representing England at junior levels is surely enough indication where their loyalties and desires lie. Granted not all cases are like that but the ones constantly sniffed after on here (the Newcastle clan) certainly and should be left to pursue their dream. Continuing to sniff around them is embarrassing and shows low self-esteem in my opinion. Approach if you do not know how they feel and if they do not commit then never ask again.

    Agree to disagree.

We need to remember most people aren’t like you or I or the rest on this forum. A lot of football fans and players won’t grow up watching a national teams, let alone attending home or away games. It’s just so unlikely that someone like Livramento or Adams were passionate England supporters (especially because they have mixed backgrounds). And that’s why they’ll happily and proudly play for us.

But fair enough if they are passionate English fans, and turn down Scotland call ups (obviously Adams didn’t do this and is a successful player for us).

So I’d always hope that a Scottish qualifying player wants to play for us.

Livramento has been in the press quite recently speaking of his England ambitions. Other articles out there too like the one below and he is already and England international at several levels:-

    https://www.independent.co.uk/sport/football/kieran-trippier-eddie-howe-southampton-magpies-manchester-city-b2510341.html

Doesn't mean he would very happily play for Scotland too. He might end up playing for England but I hope he doesn't.

If you have a choice to play for a number of countries at youth level and have lots of people advising you at a young age it it makes sense/is understandable that you play for the team with a better set-up/facilities/stronger coaches/players. And this is true even if they have stronger ties to Scotland, see Fletcher's sons, K Dembele, Jensen Weir etc.

  20. 45 minutes ago, Caledonian Craig said:

Yes, as he has committed to play for us. It is this arrogant presumption that we have some sort of a shopping list of players like Barnes, Livramento, Gordon, Gray and others that we have some sort of right to even though they are quite clearly committed to England. Good on them, move on and leave them in peace to get on with their international career with England.

Some players because of their heritage/where they have been brought up would be proud to, and would give 100% to representing more than country. It’s not that difficult.

We should support these players unless they actively don’t want to play for us (Gordon and probably Barnes fall into this category). I don’t think anyone is suggesting that they have any right to play for us over England.

From interviews and reading about Livramento, he’d be proud to represent 3 countries. We should obviously be hoping he plays for us.
