Great video. Although i'm a bit unclear on his 3rd type of socialist. Are they the 'cultural marxist' type that makes us watch hours of diversity training via diktat from HR? 😄

I'm firmly in Wolff's 1st camp, and i think Tidier is too.

As for it not being a dirty word, i totally agree. I've never had a problem describing myself as a socialist when my Centrist Dad pals and neighbours give me that tag during the political arguments i have with them.

The third type of socialism is the one that he personally advocates for which is about having democracy in the work place. By that he means that companies should operate under a co-op style structure where employees are not simply the slaves of their employer. In a capitalist system workers are told how long they will work, how much for and are essentially subservient slaves to their bosses. In a worker co-op the worker has a say in how that company operates, what rights they should have and how the pay structure of that company works, they also have a say in company policy and business direction. In a worker co-op the employees labour is not exploited for profit but everyone reaps the benefits under that companies success. Not just the board and shareholders.

One of the great myths of capitalism is that the harder you work the more money you will earn and this is simply not true.

We only think our entire existence is based on this as this is what we are being told. There has to be an alternative to this way of living. It is just not sustainable. Capitalism is going to meet a bitter end.

I am not a socialist, I think people should be rewarded for hard work and innovation , but things have gone too far and we are now just living in a greed culture.
You are right, we can’t just turn the tap off as that would be a disaster, but there has to be a gradual way to reign in the constant demand for more.
Given the sophistication and knowledge we have in the world there must be clever people out there with new workable ideas on how to restructure an economy . How to move away from this capitalist model. The problem is , like Orraloon says , businesses just want more, more, more, there is no real desire from the people in control to do things different if it comes at a cost. Lets be honest, its not governments that are in control its big business. Whatever happened to being satisfied with your lot . Society has created a monster.

Why aren't you a socialist? It's not a dirty word. You've rightly identified a lot of flaws of the capitalist system that perpetually transfers money and wealth from the poor and middle class to those who own all the assets in society. The cost is the habitability of the planet and the financial wellbeing of about 90% of people in most of the western world.

Socialism is our alternative to capitalism and it doesn't mean we're all going to be poorer, it's the idea that wealth and power can be distributed more fairly in society so that we all benefit.

Watch this video from Professor Wolf, he's excellent.

    3 kinds of socialism

Not sure what the point of that would be when they are able to win elections as it is.

The issue is being unable or unwilling to come up with a plan to achieve independence beyond asking for a referendum.

The SNP have been leading the electorate round in circles on independence for the last nine years. Nicola took us all in to a dead end then just walked away. I'm surprised more people aren't incredibly pissed off by that.

There is no plan, and there never has been. They've been making it up as they go along dangling the carrot and shaming people who don't vote for the party as not real independence supporters.

    Absolute hyperbolic pish

As i asked Aaid something similar earlier - how the fuck is that remotely possible without a huge swathe of new "centre right"  SNP MSPs at Holyrood

    Please explain for us dummies

    Hahaha

Her politics are centre right, if the rest of the party follow her lead that's where the SNP will go.

I'll be curious to see how far aaid will go to defend the SNP if Kate wins

    Aye ok

Even the Tories dont think she is a Tory but what the fuck do i know

If that article is good enough for you then have it. On policy the difference between her and Tories on both social and economic issues is paper thin. She's also a careerist with a passing interest in independence. If that's good enough for you, so be it

Until someone finds another solution it is the only way. There seemed to be a lot of opposition to the defacto referendum plan too.

I know you said to build support to 60% for independence and then go defacto which is fair enough but it has taken 300+ years to get support up to around the 50% mark so we may have a long wait to reach that benchmark. I say that as Scotland is awash with subservient Scots who, even after, utter rank incompetent Westminster governments, soaring fuel bills and lots more who still feel the essential need to remain in the gutter within this union. That subservient portion, therefore, will put up with whatever shit Westminster deals us and still walk around with a glaikit grin on their face.

We went from 30% support to 45% in two years and then stalled because we haven't done any real campaigning.

What is your plan when support is at 65% and Westminster keep saying no?

  7. 1 hour ago, Caledonian Craig said:

And that is just tosh really.

As is a known fact the only way a referendum will happen (currently) is if Westminster approves it. It matters not one jot if the SNP are on an even keel or not. And Westminster are NOT going to grant one. Yes Sturgeon did say that and was the plan but by many accounts it seems others within the party and outwith did not share the desire/appetite for a defacto referendum. It is those you want to attack and have a word with - the underminers. 😉

I don't understand your obsession with asking for permission. That's getting us nowhere

  8. I want to see us get support consistently above 60% at minimum, if at that point Westminster is still not willing to budge we go ahead and hold a referendum and get the people's confidence on the issue. If Westminster pull a Catalunya on us it will only increase support. We can't just allow the British state to invoke fascist rule over us as a matter of "legality"

Sovereignty lies with the people as far as I am concerned and we have to be willing to take matters into our hands, if there is no legal route then we have no choice.

One way or another the dam will burst

I do find it highly comical how everyone talks about referendums and why aren't we having one. Where have you been living the last 300+ years?

If Westminster says no then forget it. The Supreme Court decision confirmed that too. Sturgeon cited a defacto referendum to satisfy those of us baying for it anyway but my guess is too many within her party were against it as we seem to be seeing from the step back from that stance by her potential replacements.

We have the unionist myth they cannot answer as in if we are such a financial burden why are Westminster desperate to hold on to us? Well the independence movement has its own unanswerable question of how do we get a referendum on independence when Westminster do not allow it?

Perhaps we need to stop being so servile by "asking for permission" and take matters into our own hands? It's not going to be given to us, so it's up to us to do it.

If we build enough support for independence through smart campaigning  then the rest will follow.

You're all over the place on this. Desperately trying to justify SNP policy.  Bottom line is indy should be achieved without putting pre-conditions on it.

    Agree, it's absurd.

I've spent the last couple of years talking about the fact that the SNP have done nothing to actually campaign and build support for independence and now that we are at a point where the referendum they promised this year is no longer possible the party are saying that they need to build more support. It's completely comical.

As long as it's consensual and legal then it's no-one's business.  There are certain circumstances in which its probably not a good thing to do though - like for example with your wife's sister.

I'm just interested in Freeedom's opinion on the other side of that relationship, a married man who sleeps around.  He seems reluctant to share that though.

    Still waiting on your promise

Or EFTA , ither as an interim measure or even long term - in my view we must have a vote on our European status rather than it being a cut and dried consequence of indy as currently proposed by the SNP.  I would vote to be in the eU myself but the main things I want are single market and freedom of movement.

Indeed. 40% of Scots voted for brexit.

Independence is dead regardless of who wins the SNP leadership contest anyway. That party will never get us there

There’s a problem with the timeline with this Humza Yousaf story, just looking at Anum Qaisar’s work history and she was a case worker in the Scottish Parliament from 2016 to 2018.  She wasn’t elected until 2021.  If there was something between them then, it’s likely they were both single - or in Humza’s case separated, so only Kate Forbes would have an issue with that😉.

Maybe she was the reason for the separation?
