Shankland deserves a decent shot at being third choice. I was a bit pissed off he never got a proper chance in the last 2 games.

Our striking options are poor but dykes and Adams have done enough to make themselves first and second choice.

So no matter what they do or don't do between now and June their seats on the plane are safe?

Admire your belief in Mc Burnie but I think its misplaced.

In my time watching Scotland seldom have I seen as inept a striker as Mc Burnie. Unintelligent, lazy , indifferent and fundamentally skill deficient. Best example check out Kazakhstan away when Mc Burnie performed like a competition winner--- and a poor one at that!!

Imho Mc Burnie is the perfect example of the absurdity of the English transfer system where below average players are traded for millions.

That he wore Scotland gear in Leeds amounts to the square root of hee haw.

I think what some people are missing out here is just how bad our other forwards are. I mentioned  that Dykes and Adam haven't scored a goal between them over their combined last 26 games.

Were do you draw the line.

If Dykes becomes a bit part player at a relegated QPR side, if Adam cant get a game at Southampton. Jacob Brown isn't even an out and out striker.

That leaves us Shankland who I can't have until he plays at a decent level.

Big hope is probably Ross Stewart if he can get into the Southampton team or Tommy Conway.

The hidden factor for McBurnie not coming into the squad might be that his exclusion for the last Euros squad probably prompted some conversations for them just to draw a line under it. There have been occasions where he has been in far better form than most/all of our forwards and hasn't had a look in, especially at times when we clearly needed some depth in that position.

Not to say he wouldn't be included under future managers or when our squad starts to transition again. Similar to Steven Fletcher who had basically 2 separate international careers either side of being excluded for criticizing Levein.

He was injured for the last Euros

Depends if we have a fit Gordon available. In terms of making Gunn irreplaceable.

Hickey is fast becoming one of the first names on the team sheet, but I love that we have Patterson to step in as well.

No one can do what McGinn, McTominay, Robertson or Tierney can. Which makes it all the more painful when they are missing.

There's a chance we have all got a bit over excited about Patterson.

No he also played in a fair few of Clarke's early matches when we began to get decent results in the Nation League and still couldn't score or make any real impression. It bugs me when there are calls to call-up a tried and failed striker (16 caps 0 goals) yet a player amongst our all time top goalscorers with 18bin Kenny Miller regularly took pelters and was dubbed Kenny Misser. Sums up Scottish mentality I reckon.

Not sure how many and who against Miller scored in his first 16 caps but it wasn't many. Just checked it was  2,one against Iceland and one against Germany.

The main reason for wanting McBurnie is his club career so far and only Adams has the same sort of record.

I doubt if there are any defenders who would prefer to play against McBurnie rather than Dykes, Shankland or Brown.

McBurnie is also a massive asset in defence, and with the lack of quality we have at the back we need 10 outfield players that can contribute.

Yeah, the chances of everyone being fit come June is pretty slim. Fingers crossed none of the casualties are McTominay, McGinn, Tierney or Robertson. The 4 players that aren't replaceable.

You could probably add Gunn and Hickey to the list.

Good thing about Tierney and Hickey is that they cover 2 positions.

He only came off the bench after 79 minutes, must have been a terrible first 79 if they've awarded a sub MoM just for scoring the winner . Don't think he will ever be good enough but I'll be delighted to be proven wrong.

Touched the ball 10 times and didn't complete a pass. No idea who makes some of these MoM decisions.

McBurnie comes off the bench at halftime to try rescue the Blades

Will be interesting to see if he gets a sniff

4 attempts at goal, 6 aerial duels won, 4 tackles and 3 clearances.

If he'd replaced Haaland at half time Man city would have beaten Liverpool.

    McBurnie 3rd choice ??
Everyone entitled to their view / opinion 👍

S.Clarke gave McBurnie a dozen or so games for Scotland and Zero goals

McBurnie has hardly featured for Sheffield Utd this season, his only goal this season a penalty at Old Trafford……

I personally think he’d be a poor option to bring to Germany!!
L.Shankland + J.Brown are ahead of him going by S.Clarkes selections of late.

I’d rather S.clarke took Youth / U21 player instead of McBurnie

Think McBurnie has started every game he has been fit for, his ability to stay injury free is nearly as bad as Tierneys.

I don't rate Shankland or Brown and they have had plenty time to prove themselves at club level.

Hopefuly one of our other prospects will kick on though.

  10. We scored 17 goals in qualification which is more than the vast majority of the qualifiers for the finals if you take away the total minows from the 6 team groups.

Don't really care if Adams and Dykes don't score many, they are part of a set up that scores enough goals.

For what it's worth McBurnie is my 3rd choice.

TBF, I thought this competition was a load of shit, but its been pretty productive for most countries.

It's meant a hell of lot more competitive matches for us plus a major championship appearance.

Not so sure the next one will do us as much good though.

Lack of meaningful games over the 20 years before the Nations League helped hold us back.

Looked a little more solid with McLean coming on for Gilmour but personally I dont see the point in playing 4 at the back when we need to sacrifice a ball playing midfielder to accomodate and we still look weak at the back. We need to find a suitable replacement for Tierney whether that be Kingsley or trying Hickey in there.

Never been a fan of Taylor at this level. He is small, not fast, not strong and not great on the ball. As I said earlier im not sure if Doig is amy better and he hasnt been playing consistently at club level but might be worth a start against Norway to have a look.

Christie is a great player if we are playing high tempo. If not id rather have Armstrong or Ferguson.

And finally, controversial on here but McGinn is like a man down at times (until he comes up with the moment of brilliance which I know he does so often).

McGinn by his standards was very poor tonight.

Not sure that's right, i wouldn't have Scott Bain anywhere near the Scotland squad.

Craig Gordon is also our number 2 at the very least when fit.

    Fair point about Gordon.

However I don't think there are many players on the Celtic and rangers bench that wouldn't start elsewhere and I don't think there are many if any good enough for either of the old firms benchs.

  14. 1 hour ago, ProudScot said:

    I’d honestly start McCrorie tonight.

Dykes will get the nod upfront but he’s very out of form for his club and hasn’t scored in a while for us either so expect Shankland to be on relatively early doors.

    I'd probably agree about McCrorie.

Second choice at celtic or rangers is probably a higher standard than any other SPFL keeper.

Pretty sure Brown is ahead of Shankland in the pecking order though.

Papers down south are running the story tomorrow that we are after Antony Gordon after his snub from Southgate.

I'd be a hundred times more exited about Gordon than Barns. I might read too much into stats, but according to who scored they rate Gordon as the best player in the Newcastle squad so far this season Barnes is 19th,older and in a position we have players.

At 22 Gordon has massive potential.

  16. Seeing as he's had a few mentions in here and being a maybe Scottish player in action, Livermento played on  the right hand side of the Newcastle front three in the first half tonight agaist Dortmund. Back to right back now with Trippier moving to the left after Lewis hall wass subbed
