  1. Feel like yesterday was a bit of a missed opportunity.  Happy with the draw after being 2-1 down so late on but we could have won that with the right team selection.

O'Donnell had a tough task and struggled. Christie and Dykes looked like players out of form and low on confidence.  Fraser and Adams should have started ahead of them two.

KT is wasted at LCB.  The calls for him to play LBW are going to get louder and louder.  Robertson needs to stay well away from corners.   His corners and McTominays terrible free-kick at the end show how wasteful we are with deadballs.  Another reason why Turnbull should be in this squad.

If mctominay shows his club form in midfield Jack will struggle to get back in

    Real dilemma is up front

Dykes and Fraser looked great together

But Adams scored 3 in last 4, and goal ruled out for baw hair offside at weekend

I think he'll go with Dykes because he's played before.  But only Scotland would select a forward that can't score in the Championship over a forward scoring in the EPL.

The more I think about it, the more disappointed I am that Clarke hasn't called up more players. Jack has just dropped out AND it's a home fixture. Obviously calling up Gauld or the American lads last minute is inconvenient, but Turnbull is literally a half hour drive away. As is Forrest, McCrorie, Ferguson, Campbell etc etc

It cements the thought in my head that Turnbull has zero chance of breaking into the squad for the Euros. Which is a real shame.

I wouldn't be surprised if players were called up after this match or the Israel match.

We are bound to pick up injuries and/or suspensions.

    Marshall

    Hendry Gallagher Tierney

    O'Donnell                                 Robertson

    McTominay McGregor

    McGinn

    Dykes     Christie

This is the team I predict will start (not the team I necessarily want, though it's not far off)

I'd be really disappointed if Christie started ahead of Fraser.

I don't think it will be too far away from that.  I'd expect Tierney, Robertson, McTominay, McGregor and McGinn to start.  After that, There are a few decisions to be made -

    • Is Marshall fit or does Gordon play
    • O'Donnell or Palmer?
    • Where does McTominay play? which impacts
      • who plays CB? Hendry, Hanley or Gallagher
      • who plays CM if McTominay is CB? Fleck, McLean or Armstrong?
    • Forwards?
      • Dykes or Adams?
      • Fraser or Christie?

Are the Irelands, Wales and England losing anyone to us? Surely it can't just be one way!

We have a lot of English born players in our squads, and always have done.  It isn't very often we've selected players that England actually wanted though.  McTominay is about the only one I can think of.

Other than Dykes, I'm not sure we've ever really "poached" players from other countries.

The list of players we've lost is worrying.  We didn't seem to learn from the McGeady and McCarthy situation.  There must be something going wrong somewhere.  Harry Souttar is a more recent annoying loss.

Rodgers leaving was a huge loss for Scottish football. I say that as a Hearts fan but he was brilliant at developing players. He played more Scots than Lennon did and certainly more than Gerrard does. Although maybe Gerrard gets the benefit of the doubt due to being newer to the role and the pressure of immediate success.

Totally agree.  When Strachan had his best run it was because he filled the team with Celtic players.  We were starting matches with Gordon, Mulgrew, Tierney, Brown, Armstrong, Forrest and Griffiths while Celtic were playing great football under Rodgers.  I still think not bringing inform Callum McGregor through was one of the major reasons Strachan ended up losing his job.

It is of course possible that he and Hendry  have improved since leaving a shite set up at Parkhead.

And it would also be possible to argue that Johnston hasn't progressed for the same reason, hell you could easily use the same argument for Christie's decline this season.

I do agree with that.  No player improved under Lennon and a lot went backwards.

Personally, I thought Morgan was poor for the u21s and every time I watched him for Celtic - most of which were under Rodgers.  I'm not sure looking good in that league changes my opinion.  Russell looked good in that league.

I'd be thrilled if Morgan and Johnston could do what Hendry has done and prove me wrong.  I'm more than happy to do that with players.  I ruled Copper out in the past but I think he deserves a place in the squad now.

I dont think Morgan will ever be at the level we need to push us forward. Decent player who will do well in the USA.

Im also struggling to see that Mikey Johnson has what it takes to make the step up.

    Totally agree about both players.

  9. 39 minutes ago, Taylor1996 said:

Oh. Definitely not on the same level. Those players were world class. Brown did a good job, but I'd say that even he was a box to box player.

I think you might be right about McGregor. Hope you're right about McTominay.

It'll be interesting who gets the nod, Dykes or Adams. If I were to guess, it'll be Dykes. I don't think Clarke would be brave enough to pick both. It'll probably be Fraser/Christie + 1.

My prediction for Thursday would be -

    Gordon

    Gallagher    McKenna    Tierney

    O'Donnell     McTominay     McGregor     Robertson

    McGinn     Dykes     Fraser

    Still not convinced?

Their 2018 World Cup qualifying campaign was not stellar by any means finishing fourth in their group behind Wales, Republic of Ireland and Serbia. They drew 2-2 at home to Wales and lost 1-0 in Wales. They lost 3-2 away to Serbia and 1-0 at home to Republic of Ireland and drew 1-1 in Dublin.

But hey-ho such is some Scottish mentality lets elevate their level to the stars and downplay ourselves.

Those sound like the kind of results we'd get!  But some of these results are as far back as September 2016 so I'm not sure they have any more relevance than their Euro 2016 campaign where they won 28 out of 30 points.

Make no mistake, we have a chance of beating them but they are a good team. Like I said, I think they are better than Czech Rep and Serbia, or any team we played last year.

I think we probably have some better players than them.  We certainly select more more of Europe's elite clubs but I would say they don't have the same weaknesses we have as they probably have a much better balance than we do.

Their squad also has a lot more international experience than us - 577 caps to our 409 caps.

If we can keep things tight at the back, like we have done recently, and add a bit more quality in the final third with Fraser and Adams, then we can beat them.  We have enough in midfield to win this game.

A win would be an amazing way to start the group.

Knowing Scotland, we'll beat Austria and lose to the Faroe Islands. ;)

If we are going to qualify, we really do need to win this.

To finish top 2, I'd suggest we need 7 points from the 3 games.

If you win your home matches, and the away matches against the lower seeds, you won't be far away.  The problem is, we haven't got near this record in a very long time.

  12. 48 minutes ago, Diamond Scot said:

I agree that we shouldnt be chucking untried players into games like Austria however would there really be any issue subbing on Aaron Hickey for Stephen Odonnell with 30 mins remaining in a match against the Faroes assuming we are winning at the time?

Why players like Considine or Taylor are in the squad is beyond me. For Taylor to get gametime both Robertson and Tierney would have to get injured. He cant play anywhere except LB and doesnt have the potential to hold down that position in his career. Hickey could challenge for RWB now and its reasonable to say that in a couple if years time the position will be held down by either him or Paterson. Get them in and exposed asap.

Also, the first step is getting them in the squad and seeing how well they fit in.

He could have easily included Hickey, Patterson, Gauld, Turnbull and Gilmour without even having to drop any of the others.

  13. So it looks like a full-strength Austria team heading to Hampden this week.

Make no mistake, Austria are a good side.  I'd say they are stronger than both Serbia and Czech Rep, who we have played recently.

In 2020, they played 8, won 6, drew 1 and lost 1.  They won their Nations League group which included Norway, Romania and Northern Ireland.

The bookies have Austria as favourites.

This is a game in which a crowd could have been a big help for us.

Clarke was just saying that he doesn't understand the clamour to bring in lots of new faces. That the WC qualifiers is not the right time to do it. He also said that Gilmour, for example, has 15 years ahead of him to break into the squad.

That's quite disheartening to hear. I'm perfectly happy with the lotalty aspect, but not at the expense of better players.

Turnbull, for instance, won young player of the year and has been a stand out performer for months. Although only 21, he has shown that he is ready for the step up. Gilmour is lacking game time, but we can all see that he is more than ready to be called upon regardless of the opposition.

Just coming back to this post...I wonder when Clarke does think the right time is?

We have these three matches (personally think Faroes could be a good game to have new players on the bench).

Then we go into pre-Euro 2020 friendlies.  Is that the time? I can't imagine Euro 2020 group matches is ideal.

Then we have WC qualifiers in September, October and November.

I'm not even sure what matches will be played in March 2022.  Nations League? Do we have to wait that long?

It is disheartening.  I could understand it if we were on a really good run...but we aren't.

    Results in 2020 -

    • Scotland 1-1 Israel
    • Czech Rep 1-2 Scotland (this was their 'C' team)
    • Scotland 0-0 Israel (won 5-3 on penalties)
    • Scotland 1-0 Slovakia
    • Scotland 1-0 Czech Rep
    • Serbia 1-1 Scotland (won 5-4 on penalties)
    • Slovakia 1-0 Scotland
    • Israel 1-0 Scotland

We have improved but we have a long way to go if we want to do well in the summer.

Players should be picked on merit - not just because they were involved when we won a couple of penalty shoot-outs.

  16. According to reports, Gauld was excellent again yesterday as Farense beat Boavista.  He won a penalty, which he then missed - it was a good save.

The win takes them out of the relegation zone.  There is 9 points between 8th and 18th in that league so will be an interesting end of season for Gauld.

I still think Gauld, Turnbull and Gilmour all improve our squad.

I thought Christie was ok today, and expect him to be fine for Scotland. I’ll be delighted if he moves in the summer.

    He needs to move.

We was a waste of a shirt today. Taking Turnbull off instead of Christie summed up our season.
