As soon as the SFA made turning up more optional under McLeish, we have seen the call off culture creep in. Ultimately it has been endemic over this campaign and unless we get on top of it, this will continue for a long time. The only way we can do it is to call players up and assess them ourselves where dubiety exists.
If it was optional under McLeish then it seemed to be a requirement to call off under Burley. Did we not pick up someone in an airport in London on way to Japan (?) as we had so many call offs?

I would tend to agree.
He moved from Premier League Bournemouth to Championship Newcastle the transfer window after making his debut. Possibly for more money. Given many English clubs are reluctant to release players for international football then I think its not exactly a big negotiating point when the next contract talks came round. Peter Grant claimed a player was offered a raise if he gave up international football.

Look at England, their players want to be there, they've even had the balls to tell one of their best players to fuck off home after an altercation with a team mate. NI, ROI and Wales all seem to have players willing to run through walls for their country but we don't.
Northern Ireland used to suffer terribly with withdrawals. i remember when i used to bet quite a bit betting against them on some S American end of season tour they had where they had a small number of Irish League players in their squad, they were that low on numbers. Doesn't seem to happen as often nowadays though.....
I sort of raised this topic last week. Notables from England who "retired" have been Carragher and Vardy. Carragher a while ago, Vardy more recently and someone who would still be a squad pick now I think.Neither were first choice at the time.
Giggs used to duck Wales friendlies quite often, or that was the impression many had. Don't know the actual numbers. Maddison pulled out of the last England squad because he was unwell and went to the casino instead.
They certainly don't seem to have the same number of retirements or lack of commitment as we do. Injuries wise, I can't say. The big difference between them and us is that they have all been to major tournaments recently, we haven't.
Point I was trying to make previous week was that I don't think a lot of players don't see international football in the same way as fans view it, an honour. I think for some its a hinderance more than anything. That certainly seems to be the case with a lot of our squad and possibly the odd player at other home nations....but definitely not to the extent we suffer it.
Squirrelhumper but up a decent post about the large number of caps several players have across these nations. Yet at a time when its easier than even to pick up caps due to the number of games being played, our record cap holder is still Dalglish and our current squad might see Naismith make 50 this coming round of fixtures then its Forrest and Marshall on 32. Take our recent game v Belgium. Both Hazard and Witsel have more caps than Dalglish and someone like Lukaku is on 83 and only 26 year old.

Only game I’ve been to this campaign is San Marino away. Due to getting £55 return flights to Milan and the fact I love Italy.
Im heading through to Glasgow on Saturday to meet some mates and one asked in our chat about watching the game. I didn’t even know we were playing Saturday. If we are in a pub that has game on then fine but If not I can take it or leave it. Certainly not going searching for it.
It’s not just me. It’s loads. Lads at my work who have been members for ages just not interested. We used to run a bus to most home games. And filled it especially at weekends. I’ve not had one enquiry asking if we have been running one this campaign, not one, not even for the Saturday game at home.
i actually only hang around here for the banter now!

Seems the other Home Nations don't have an issue with turning up for internationals. Our h ighest in recent times is Darren Fletcher (more reason than most to miss games) - 80 Caps, Kenny Miller 69 Caps, David Weir 69 Caps and Christian Dailly on 67. Then it's Caldwell on 55.

IMO Scottish players aren't as committed to playing for Scotland as us fans think they should be. They would rather spend the time at home, clear up injuries or do a variety of other things when an international break comes round. We, as fans, find it hard to understand someone not wanting to play for their country. A lot of them, as players, don't have that same view. That's what I have been arguing. You seem to be saying this too. Or have I misunderstood the whole "Scottish players are wank" comment.
Other nations suffer it to with certain individuals. But not to the extent we seem to.

Have you ever heard of Arsenal Fans TV? I have seen a couple of bits of it. Just some boy ranting about wanting Wenger out when he was manager, possibly now wanting Emery out.
My middle lad likes Arsenal so we went to the Newcastle Arsenal game at start of the season. We were walking up to the game and he says to me "There's xyz, the boy from from Arsenal Fan TV".
I have no idea if this guy has made anything out of it but he is certainly well known and a "personality". Again previous description applies.

Lots of kids now watch other kids playing games. Part because of those playing's personality, and I use that in the loosest possible sense of the word, and part because they are good at it.
One of my kids showed me a gamer called Nick on a streaming service one night. He was watching him. So were a couple of thousand other kids watching this guy play FIFA. He was Canadian (I think) and swore a lot. Throughout the stream he was getting donations and "subscriptions", basically kids donating a $ or 2 here or there, sometimes more. And what did they get from it?? Well Nick would give them a "shoutout". This isn't even 15 mins of fame, its 15 seconds...."Thanks very much for the donation BillyBob, I really appreciate that". And the kid has just had his name shouted out to a couple of thousand other kids and gets some kudos because Nick said his name. Honestly the money churning in was nuts. And some were doing it frequently.....Thanks very much Englebert, 14 months subscription in a row, really appreciate those $5....
My mates laddie isn't a big personality but hes really good at Fortnite. He's 15. He streams on YouTube I think. He's making about £750 a month from kids giving him money. My mate said he heard a noise from his bedroom one day, went through and his laddie had jumped out the window of, thankfully, their ground floor house. He asked him what he was doing....."Someone just paid me £25 to jump out the window". So he did it. He has a fleece/hoody that he wears when streaming...someone has sponsored it. He is just small scale but is still making decent money for a school kid sitting on his arse playing games. The ones at the top of the tree are coining it in, like Nick. The ones at the very top have used their "fame" to go into other things.....such as PPV boxing matches.

I cannae really criticise folk on here for jumping the gun when the situation is handled so vaguely.
Clarke was characteristically tight-lipped in his conference and it was difficult to tell from him and his answers what, if anything, the real story is.
I mentioned yesterday that Tierney played for Scotland wi a broken jaw, or ten days after having it broken at any rate. I think it would be churlish to say he didn't have commitment then. I suppose the question is has that changed (it does certainly look that way) and if so, why?
Peter Grant said on one of the podcasts I listened to that Steven Fletcher had an injury which needed a small operation and that's why he wasn't picked on one occasion. He then said it wasn't Scotland's right to disclose that X player had an injury and was having to have an operation. I have the feeling that we (Clarke/SFA) do know what's what but they aren't at liberty to disclose what's what!

Its definitely an age thing. I have Sky, Amazon and Netflix. Have 3 laddies of 18, 15 and 13. They all have access to watching any of those options in their rooms. Without doubt if I walked in their rooms and they were watching something it would be You Tube. I think its to do with attention span. A lot of the YT stuff is short bites of maybe 10 mins or so. I don't think kids want to commit/watch even a 42 min TV programme nowadays. Actually I will take that back a bit....my 18 year does watch more "TV" nowadays, films and programmes. Younger two are still very much favouring YT though.
In amongst the multitude of pish I am sure there is some decent content on YT but a lot of if is very much home made "presenters" just waffling a lot of pish. Its like an audio version of the TAMB.
The boy KSI who is one of those "fighting" used to make FIFA videos for YT. It basically involved him shouting and screaming and swearing uncontrollably at the camera. Kids seemed to like it. No idea why. Its brain numbing stuff. But then he's the millionaire so who is the stupid one?

And yes, if we ever made a major tournament then 10 days would seem like a day at the park given how long the squad would be together but I have a feeling there would be much more “commitment” with a major tournament over a trip to Kazakhstan and a game in San Marino!

Your EPL level players aren’t going to be juggling childcare and their wife working shifts and it’s these guys that are making themselves unavailable. Your Aberdeen, Motherwell, Killie and Hearts players are more likely to struggle with these sort of real life issues.
The week of football hasn’t really changed much, I feel that factor is overplayed. We used to play Saturday and Wednesday, can now play Thursday Monday and be home 2 days earlier... Wednesday is still the last day you can play.
We didn’t always have double headers guaranteed though. Week of football pretty much guarantees that is the case every month from September to November.
I think you are taking the “being away from family” too literally. Doesn’t have to be kids, doesn’t even have to be even wife or girlfriend, I’m not saying their partners are struggling to cope at home. It’s more the just being away from your normal routine, home comforts, chance to get rid of a niggle or ease something for a couple of days off.
Again I will say for us as fans it’s nuts that we would look on those sort of situations as being a hardship over the chance to represent our country but I just have feeling for SOME players they would rather not make that sacrifice. Steven Fletcher and Peter Grant have both alluded to this being the case.

With each squad it becomes harder to give Tierney the benefit of the doubt.
Just two very quick examples of the top of my head.
There has to be something why players, young and old, are ducking Scotland squads. Grant and Fletcher have both mentioned about the demands of now being together 10 days or more and it not being ideal.
As I mentioned at start, for us fans, who actually spend money home and away, it’s hard to accept players aren’t as committed to Scotland as we feel we are.

It really is. Two men who have just been involved with the SFA and the national team has said as much. I will take their opinions of actually being there and facing these problems and making these decisions over your non informed opinion thanks.
You can choose to not believe that if you want, and I know you have previous of not wanting to believe things from those who have more information and understanding than you, but it is a thing.
Just because every player doesn’t have that view or outlook certainly doesn’t mean SOME players don’t. Call it being away from home, family, routine, club fitness set up, needing rests or short breaks but it’s definitely a thing about why certain people aren’t playing for us.

The time away from their family doesn't appear to affect them much and 3 of those have more money than you could ever spend.
I think your are possibly missing the point if you are listing two of the most driven players in the history of world football, who played for two of the biggest nations going, as examples of players who do want to play for the country.
I will summarise. It’s not all players who might feel this way, only some. The “week of football” is a factor. The lack of success and continuity may have an impact.
Think about yourself as a fan. You have been about here years. Do you still have the same enthusiasm now as you did 10 years ago when we would think nothing of firing off to friendlies at the end of a season or double headers spanning most of Europe? Or has the lack of success and the week of football, and possibly some other factors too, dulled your desire to follow Scotland. It’s certainly done a lot to kill mines, that’s for sure.
Some of these may be reasons why our best option at centre forward doesn’t want to play. Likewise our best goalie and one of our best options in the centre of midfield. We have also seen the likes of Snodgrass and McArthur pass on international football as well in recent times.
Its not just us. England have had Carragher and more recently Vardy give up on international selection. Possibly because they were never going to be first choice but Vardy would surely still be an England option even now? Giggs was a notable sicknote for Wales in friendlies especially.
As I started, for the majority of us fans it’s not really conceivable that you wouldn’t want to play for your country. Especially us on here who have probably spent time and money over the years committing to follow Scotland. And probably equally as much time on here talking about Scotland. But I do feel, for SOME players, it’s not thought of anywhere near the levels of the “honour” and “privilege” that us fans feel it would be. It’s wouldn’t be a surprise to me if their commitment wasn’t at same level as ours and that translates into their willingness to play for Scotland.

Can’t discount their being genuine reasons for him sitting this out, but you’d have to presume he has some say in this.
Awkward one for the SFA, as they don’t want to damage any relationship with the player or club, but looking at Tierney and several others, is it time we got a bit tougher?
I think we, as fans, over estimate the importance of international football to players. I am sure there are a few who are as passionate about it as most fans are but I think for a lot its definitely a take it or leave it situation. Especially if its for a struggling nation with little to no chance of success.
Peter Grant put a good angle on it on a podcast I listened to recently. International football used to be a game on a Wednesday night where you maybe join the squad Monday or Tuesday and you are home probably Thursday morning latest. Now you are away from home, family, your usual set up of training etc for 10 days or more at a time. Again, no matter what we as fans think, that probably doesn't hold a lot of appeal for many players. Who could use that time to rest up that tweak or twinge or could nip off for a break with the wife/kids.
I don't think getting tougher will do anything bar drive those who find it less appealing into permanent international retirement. The national FA's are meant to have the power to veto players playing after missing international games but how many of them, not just Scotland, actually enforce it? Virtually none that I can think of. The players and clubs have the power here.
