Interesting that Celtic have signed a young midfielder from Bolton.

I wonder if he was the 2nd choice on the list after Turnbull?

I've no idea if he's any good or not but he hasn't had much 1st team football and last season was his breakthrough, albeit when Bolton were being relegated.

I wonder if he's heading back out on loan?

No, he was always on the radar even before Turnbull. Picked up for potential and cheap, not the same category of player Turnbull would fit into.

It’s my understanding that we’ll play Finland at home during March 2020 for a play off final place. The other semi-final is currently Norway v Serbia. All teams are subject to change, if any of the 4 qualify automatically from their current group.

If Scotland qualify for the final and a chance of a Euro 2020 final place, home advantage for that final will be determined by the toss of a coin after the 2 finalists are confirmed. This would give us a few days to organise flights and accommodation, if we won the semi-final and then got drawn away.

Have I interpreted the information correctly?

    Cat

    No.

There will be a draw made before the semi final to decide which semi final winner has home advantage for the final. If our semi is the unlucky one we are still, as you say, in the boat of having a couple of days to organise transport at very least. But we will know ahead of the semi if we have to do it, not after it.

  3. I was actually quite looking forward to Euro 2020 having games in Scotland. However those prices have killed any excitement stone dead. For one I wouldn't be paying €50 to watch a game between two random countries that I have no affiliation to. And secondly there is now way I am paying €125 or €175 to watch Scotland games. I wouldn't pay €175 to watch Scotland playing in the World Cup final at Hampden, v San Marino, and starting 3-0 up from the first leg! So no chance that I am paying that for group games at the Euro's.

I believe there is a second ballot later in the year where you can apply for tickets for your actual country instead of blind booking games where you have no real idea who is going to be playing? I will take my chances with that, if we qualify, and SSC, over spunking money on games where I couldn't give a hoot who wins.

Celtic have the newspapers to put across their narrative, Motherwell go direct to the fans, as some of the media don’t even send someone to our pressers unless we are playing the OF, let alone do our dirty work for us.

    😂

I agree with Slasher that neither side has really done well on this matter but in this instance but, as Motherwell did, Celtic have also gone direct to the fans with the Twitter statement.

It is unusual but, again as Slasher said, while it sounds like a teenager who’s just been papped off a burd be fancies, I do think it’s been done too try and ward off likely criticism by the fans of the deal not happening.

Celtic feel they have offered fair terms, from other stories it seems the Turnbull side thinks that doesn’t represent terms which would guarantee him as a first choice pick. Which, IMO, is a wee naive. What money you get at Celtic and your transfer fee doesn’t really indicate how likely you are to start. That’s been shown this season alone with Sinclair and Ntcham, about £6-7m worth of fees and probably both near the top of the pay scale, being benched for the likes of Johnston and Henderson at times. If Turnbull, or his agent, thinks that a certain salary equates to a guaranteed start then they are both in the wrong game.

We need an outball that is more than just Burke .  Otherwise were just inviting too much pressure .  A solid central three and wingers tucking in for me.  Will be interesting to see what Clarke does.

    Never a truer word said!!

He got the winner on Saturday but his game more summed up by his first action of coming on. getting ball, running past a couple of their players and then straight into another Cyprus player. Heidless chicken.

doubt we will go with two wingers for an away game v Belgium, so possibly Armstrong for Forrest.

I can understand what you are trying to do but my only problem with that sort of line up is sticking central players in wide positions.....unless you mean for him to sit further in from the right and leave the right hand side of the midfield free? I have seen Armstrong playing wide left for Celtic under Delia, it didn't work at all and nearly finished the lads career before it started.

We are going to need to defend tonight but we will have some of the ball and I would rather have (hard working) wide players who can tuck in, drop back and double up with the full back rather than players who don't normally perform that role.

Venezia and Harvey St Clair got relegated from Serie B last night

Didn't play last night but he was getting slightly more game time towards the end of the season.

Still only 20 but I'm not sure were this leaves him now.

I am pretty certain Venezia will appeal and probably stay in B. Italian clubs like an appeal.

Given you have no choice in the matter or any control over it......being proud of where you were born, country, region whatever...

I can understand your thinking here. However I think as you grow up you can help make a positive contribution to your town/region/country and help make it a good place to live. I like to think of Scotland as a outward looking, inclusive and forward thinking country, that's probably something to be proud of.

I’ll be honest and admit I’ve probably said worse in group chats.

But you are not in a public position of power and influence near the top of our football association. That's the difference.

I am not saying Mackay should never work again. However certain roles should probably be off limits for him including the one he is in at the moment.

but disingenuous there, when you know fine well what the point was. Robertson doesn't get to Liverpool without first taking that next step to Hull.  Virgil doens't get there either without that next step to Southampton. It would be part of Tierneys development IF he wants to get to that next level......IF.

I'm arguing it only on the individuals players development point of view. IF he's more concerned about Scottish League titles then thats his choice.

I understand a Celtic fans perspective as what else are they going to win. but not really from a players perspective.

Fair enough but he has just turned 22. There is every chance that he could satisfy everyone's demands.....stay at Celtic to hopefully win the league for the next 2 seasons and then leave having just turned 24 to further develop his career elsewhere. Thats easily a potential 10 years elsewhere, a long time.

It doesn't have to be one or the other but from the way some people are talking, you would think his career will be finished come August if he is still a Celtic player.  Some halfwit was even saying he was mentally weak because he wasn't going to leave.

A manager that has the tactical nous and ability to set up and organise that group should see us being more successful than we've been in recent years.

    Agree totally.

I watched the end of N Ireland game yesterday and MON made 3 very attacking subs early second half to turn around a v poor performance. Looking at his 14 that he used yesterday I would say Evans and Cathcart are the only players who would get into our starting 11. The rest are Championship players at best. But they are set up well and the players know their roles in his line ups.

I got the feeling that Clarke was treating the game as “it’s only Cyprus” to a degree, as it’s starting line up did look more like a McLeish team, but he did seem to make the right changes, which makes me think he was saving McTormanay and Burke with a view to playing them in Belgium (he did seem to leave his subs until rather late in the game I felt).

I really don’t think Scotland are in the position at the current time to treat any game as an “It’s only...”. And I definitely don’t think an experienced manager, in his first game in charge, would have been taking the “It’s only” approach, or at least I hope that’s not the case.

I don't blame him, if I as a Celtic fan I'd want to be part of the history too. it'll never happen again.

It's not a question about what's hardest, surely you can't blame a player for having career satisfaction, memories, celebrating making history with his family and mates? I can easily understand why he'd want to stay for 10IAR.

I doubt he cares what other football fans think - I wouldn't.

It might mean nothing to 99.9% of football fans but it'll mean everything to him I'm sure. He's living the dream and for some, it's not all about chasing money as soon as you can. Fair play to him if that's his choice, it's his life after all.

I'd like to think he'd leave after 10UAR (or if Celtic fuck it before then) to a better league.

Away with your actually seeing it from a Celtic diehard, playing for the club he loves, sort of nonsense FFS. Why can't you just agree with the he should fvck off and fvck off right now otherwise his career will be dead by the start of August posters?

Its blatantly obvious he should be playing in the famous blue of Leicester (or Everton) next season and fighting for a glorious 7th place finish in the PL instead of something insignificant like being a large part of potentially one of Celtic's biggest achievements in their history. Madness. On his part.

Just to add what else I meant is I'm proud of how we support compared to how engand fans support and react.

Self policing isn't as hard for us and that's to be respected, appreciated and continued.

Our support is pretty grim now, there is probably more atmosphere on the moon than there is at Scotland home and away games the last couple of years. England, by contrast, actually make a pretty good racket in the stadium. How some of their young arseholes behave outside it is a different matter.

What this summer will tell us, If Tierney is not pushing to move. Is that he does not have the required mental strength or the strength of personality to take the next step to better himself.

Or as a massive Celtic fan he may want to stay and try and win 10 titles in a row over the next 2 seasons and then decide to play elsewhere. Or he may love Celtic so much he wants to stay and play his whole career there.

Suggesting a player lacks mental strength or personality just because he doesn't do what you think he should do is just made up pish. Your vision is anything but Golden.

You are probably one of those who continually slates the quality of Scottish football but at the same time is desperate for the best players in the league to fvck off ASAP.

Yes...but all of that apart...Ryan Jack has played the position comfortably umpteen times throughout his career.

I assume thats for Aberdeen then as I am pretty sure he hasn't played there for Rangers? I haven't followed his career closely enough to know how often he has performed well at RB.

I still stand by my original point that the vast majority of our players are of average ability and moving them from the positions they are most comfortable playing week in week out can only diminish their performances. Would love to be proved wrong by Jack but for me, for the moment, I am would rather see a right back playing right back for us.

Some footballers are able to play competently in a number of positions, pigeon-holing players seems to be something that we do with players from a very young age.

Paul Lambert was an attacking midfielder for Motherwell...a few training sessions with Dortmund and they seen something in him that would turn him into one of the best holding midfielders in Europe. Thierry Henry was a winger before Arsene Wenger fired him up front. Vincent Kompany was a midfielder prior to becoming one of the best defenders about. Who would have thought Matt Ritchie could excel as a full-back?

A competent defensive central midfielder should be able to play full-back pretty comfortably, especially from a defensive point of view...Jack has played at right-back lots of times, and for me is a far more accomplished fitba' player than Stephen O'Donnell.

Dropping back from attacking mid to defensive mid because you don't have the pace to play attacking mid isn't a big jump, you are still playing in the centre of the park, just deeper.

Henry didn't make much of a position change, he always played coming in off the left, just a bit further forward when Arsene moved him.

Kompany again, played defensive mid, dropped back into the back four, not a massive change, again playing in the middle of the park, just a bit deeper.

Ritchie certainly hasn't "excelled" at full back, in fact he doesn't even play full back, he plays wing back as Newcastle play a back 3 so he doesn't have as many defensive duties as a normal full back. Which is a good thing as he is as slow as a week in the jail and would be a very weak link as part of a back 4.

There is a big difference between playing a decent holding role in the centre of the park and playing widest of a back 4 expected to cover a player like Hazard for example. The young lad at Arsenal showed the struggles of playing a midfielder at full back last night. Gary Holt under Vogts v Hungary (?) another example of why its not a good idea to stick a centre mid in at full back.

Am I the only one on here who thinks SOD is alright? Not amazing by any stretch but he's put in a decent shift in every game he's played bar Israel away where the entire defence was bad.

I agree with you. And he is certainly a better option at RB, the position he plays week in week out, than some average central midfield player.

Anyone suggesting Ryan Jack plays RB ahead of him is firmly in the Bertie Vogts camp of sticking players in positions they are not used to playing.

We have, in the main, an average set of players. Lets not lessen their potential to perform and ability further by playing them in positions they are not used to playing.
