  1. He was a better manager for Scotland than Ormond who replaced him. He was a man the Tartan Army would have got fully behind if he'd stayed a bit longer.

But why has there not been a thread for the other guy who died - the guy who should have been Scotland manager but the SFA didn't have the courage to ask him? (Parallels with the English FA and Brian Clough.) The guy who didn't suffer cheek from insolent BBC reporters. The one and only Jim McLean...

I have, this boy is fuckin class man. I'm no saying this because I am a  Celtic man, Turnbull is pure class. He just so calm on the ball, never panics, has great vision, and not afraid to take anyone on. His corners and dead balls are spot on. The big thing is his energy, he never stops. Oh aye, and he scores goals...🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Turnbull has the balance and agility of a matador.

  3. Che Adams is not good enough to play for England so this "will he, wont he?" story could run on for a long time. Nigel Quashie came in on the granny but he actively approached the SFA and told them he wanted to play for Scotland, as I understand it. I've got no problem with the granny rule but I'd like to see some desire to play for Scotland. A player holding off in case England come calling doesn't tick the boxes for me.

Hopefully he makes a full recovery. He did think that his career was over when it snapped the most recent time.

Will it be detrimental long term, though? There are injuries that make your body vulnerable.

I watched the Stoke match last night.

Initially I thought that losing Souttar to Australia wasn't a big deal... But now... I think it's a big deal. He looks impressive. He'll be in the EPL sooner rather than later.

It's a shame, Harry Souttar, McKenna and Tierney would've been quite the trio.

Harry Souttar could not be bothered working hard to improve his game and get a cap alongside his brother for the country of his birth. Bringing guys in whose attitude is not right has a negative effect on the morale of the whole squad. Lou Macari once said of the 1974 World Cup squad that he always knew someone would let them down. I don't care where a player was born - Goram, Rioch, Hutchison etc have been great players for Scotland - but I do want see a genuine desire to play for Scotland.

  5. Players coming in for the wrong reasons (i.e. because their agents say an international cap will be help get new contracts) can destroy the morale of the team. The whole is worth more than the sum of the parts.

  6. Vogts, Smith, McLeish, Burley, Levein and Strachan all failed to qualify for major tournaments. If the clubs are not coaching players to the highest standards, there is only so much a manager can do. Instead of changing managers, we should be asking why we're not producing players like Messi, Ronaldo, Zidane etc? MacGillivray, playing in the third tier of English football, has been in a Scotland squad. What does that say about the quality of player the Scottish clubs are bringing through?

Snodgrass scores as well and still ppl think we don't have decent players to choose from. We have some good players playing well in the epl and for Celtic in Europe. Clarke Should be able to get a decent team together for march and give us a good chance of going through.

    Clarke can't pick Snodgrass

  8. Ritchie's agent will have explained that it's better for career prospects not to be capped because you have retired from international football instead of not being capped because you're maybe third choice.

The Scottish cringe is strong here.

If you are going to make these comments, then I suggest you do your research first instead of behaving like a Conservative Party MP and opening your mouth to expose your ignorance. People used to talk about having "all-tartan" teams in the 1960s and 70s and what they meant were Scotland teams comprised entirely of players who were not only born in Scotland but also playing their football in Scotland. These arguments surface when the national team is unsuccessful. The suspicion is that players from outwith Scotland do not play with their hearts on their sleeves. I think it's unfair and bear in mind that we're talking about Andy Goram, Stuart McCall, Richard Gough and Don Hutchinson, here.

If you're not a cringing Scot, you won't be anywhere near the football on Saturday - you'll be in George Square. See you there.

Don't really have that much of a problem with dubious nationality cases, but if your going to dilute the squad it shouldn't be on the basis that what we currently have is awful.

From what I can see Caulker isn't that much better and is no were near the standard we require. If we are going to have to play sub standard players I would sooner they were 5 years younger like some of our options.

He will probably start our next game along side Cooper though which will delight some on here.

If we're going to dilute the team, it's exactly because the current squad is awful.

If you want an "all-tartan" team, don't criticise the manager if he loses a few games.

When you find out what international class means let me know, it's used around here to describe loads of players despite what they are capable of at club level.

The likes of Mcallister, McClair and now Robertson would appear to be more capable at club level but were/are unsuited to international football.

By definition they must not be "international class"

They used to say Kenny Dalglish never replicated his club form at Liverpool when he played for Scotland. In reality, he was too good for the Scottish diddies he had to play alongside who did not have his intelligence and did not know how to play alongside him. McAllister, Collins and Lambert carried eight other ordinary Scots into the 1998 World Cup. Don't  criticise Robertson who's turning up to play with English lower league players when he plays for Scotland. When we have players like Liverpool, he'll reproduce his Liverpool form.

    Embarrassing

Yes, it's embarrassing that this country has not been able to produce an international class centre-back since David Weir retired.

Ethan Hamilton played 90 min for Southend.

He's 21 next week and he's never played for the Under 21s. I'm surprised at that. I've seen him several times at youth level for Manchester United and he looks very good. A lot of United fans think he'll be better than McTominay.

Don't you remember when Rangers fans were saying that Stephen Hughes was going to be better than Barry Ferguson?

  14. Vogts failed to qualify for a major tournament, Smith failed, McLeish failed, Burley failed, Levein failed and Strachan failed. It's time to move on from blaming the manager and start addressing the fact that the players coming through are not good enough.

I really don’t get it.....is the relentless failure to not qualify for major tournaments the reason the Performance Schools were set up in the first place??!

The truth is clubs do not have the patience to develop players.... managers don’t get enough time for a start..... there’s got to be a degree of instant success or they are out on their arses within half a season. Playing kids is seen as a “risk” so they opt for experience.

I always use Levein as an example. Two seasons ago, Hearts were skelping Celtic 4-1 with a young, exciting squad of players. Add to that the experience of players like Naismith and they had a real recipe for success. Fast forward a couple of seasons, where are these young talented hungry players now? And more importantly where are Hearts now???

Am sure Levein has recently said something along the lines of Cochrane not being physically ready for the SPL yet.....best midfielder at the club though....what chance have we got with this kind of mentality?!

Then you’ve got the Stevie G’s who would rather develop other team’s players...

The truth is clubs do not have the patience to develop players....

Nor do they have the patience to wait seven years for a boy to progress through school.

  16. Vogts failed to qualify for a major tournament; Smith failed, McLeish failed, Burley failed,  Levein failed, Strachan failed.

How much evidence do we need that the players the clubs are producing are not good enough? In the squad to play Belgium and Russia, we had three goalkeepers all playing their football in the English lower leagues. Closing down the performance schools is an outrageous act of greedy self-interest by clubs which want their hands on the money and do not care about the national team.
