  1. The blame for me would lie at the door of the Scottish FA board who were guilty, after around mid-December, of dithering too long over speaking to O'Neill. Another Rangers and McInnes situation  where the current employer moves heaven and earth to keep their manager, while the prospective employer takes so long that the manager questions whether he would get the support he receives at his current job.

Blame would also lie at the door of the Scottish FA that we have ended up so financially poor due to not qualifying for tournaments for over 20 years.

  2. MON would be a positive choice for Scotland manager. He plays in form players and that is something that WGS was guilty of in 2015 and 2016, which cost us two campaigns.

MON might have a patchier record against the big teams however he got the job done on both occasions, only being outdone by a disgraceful refereeing decision and some bad luck upfront of goal.

Strachan brought us back to a more respectable level but couldn't the job done. We need someone to get the job done. I feel like MON would be the man to do it.

There are modern stadia, which are even worse for that.

The Emirates (when we played our Brazil match) and Wembley are both dreadfully shallow on the lower tiers.

I missed the game at the Emirates but on both occasions at the new Wembley, I've been in the bottom tier and you are correct. Poorly done.

I'm of an average height, about 5 ft 10 inches and on probably over half of my Hampden games, I have struggled to see over tall folk in the row in front of me. It's not a good place for watching the game at times.

    Stay.

I have always wondered why have the SFA never purchased the freehold on Hampden . with it they would have some borrowing power and could also sell the naming rights along the lines of the Etihad and Emerates ( i know they wouldn't get anywhere near the amounts Arsenal and Man city get ) but it could still be substantial. lets be honest without Scotland playing there Hampden is a white Elephant . They should approach Queens park about selling if they don't want to walk away it will be their loss.

That is a very good post. Agreed why don't the SFA just offer to purchase thr ground? Sorry if there are any Queens Park fans here but for a national football association to be grovelling for rights from a lower league ground it is quite laughable in this day and age and a situation so out of date it is unreal. I just wonder how much purchasing Hampden would cost though. Far too much I think.

Coming back to these two posts, I wonder if the delay in announcing whether we are staying or going is down to the Scottish FA exploring the option of taking over Hampden from QP.

If so, with a proper redevelopment to follow addressing the obvious flaws of shallowness, distance to park and failure to retain atmosphere then I am all for staying.

If there's no plans to upgrade, despite thoroughly despising both of the clubs, Parkhead and Ibrox as a home (Scotland fan) are better venues than Hampden.

Sad that our national stadium, is viewed with such ambivalence and contempt by some fans through Scotland. Obviously built on the cheap and fans of Scottish clubs can see that.

Murrayfield is not the answer and would be a dreadful move.

  5. Despite having 4 star status now (5 star in the old days), it's not a great ground to visit as a fan. It has obvious deficiencies: very shallow terraces that make it difficult to see over folk, being a fair way from the park particularly behind the goals, poor atmospherics.

However, despite all this, we will not move. The Scottish FA get a reasonably good deal at Hampden, which they are unlikely to get elsewhere.

Ideally we would stay and see a fully redeveloped Hampden Park, however it is very unlikely. There is little appetite in corporate Scotland to plough money into football and the governments can happily point to the high stadium rating.

The Scottish FA could surprise us and press for something better at Hampden but not going to happen.

Assuming that's CET then it'll be a 1pm kick aff here. Still better than the 7:45 on a Saturday night we had last campaign

No, that Is GMT, as its 3pm CET.

Its only a "optional" time, but if offered, I can see the SFA ripping UEFA's hand off for that.

Pretty much so UEFA can now do 8-9 hours of constant international football at weekends..... ie Scotland v Israel at 2pm, Ireland v Netherlands at 5pm and Italy v Germany at 7:45pm.

A total no brainer for us to get 2pm kick offs if we are at home over a weekend. Know of a fair few lads who would go then but don't for midweeks or the late weekend kick offs.

SFA Source describing Michael O'Neill's situation as "in the balance" can be termed as optimistic at best.

For me - McLeish is always too passive dishing out quotes like "come and get me" or "I'd be happy to talk". We need someone with a bit of gumption to apply themselves rather than sitting by a phone and stirring media speculation every time the Scotland or Rangers job is going spare.

Paul Lambert - some might say safe some might say uninspiring - former player turned manager who has several years of up and down success managing in England would appear to be the most likely choice.

Others such as Prandelli or Billic would be outside the box appointments, the type of appointment which would surprise everyone I reckon if the SFA were to pull off.

That said although I have had countless complaints about the SFA and the concept that they seem to be marketing over football as long as the gravy train keep running, since I care enough to emphatically hope that they get it right eventually, this is why I have to renew my membership. However I do understand this type of comment won't inspire the cynics or the weary sufferers of the National Team to do the same!

You've got a point - he seems to shite the big games.

I'm going by the SFA standards. I am all for a foreign coach, but need to be realistic with the SFA in charge.

    It'll be McLeish's again by March. ;)

Watch Aberdeen most home games and that is a big issue with McInnes, he's too conservative in big games and ultimately that does him. Not good enough tactically for international football.

Fail to see many Scottish candidates that would inspire me.

For me, it is important to get a manager that puts defensive strength and results ahead of style. Too often under WGS, at key moments, we conceded stupidly soft goals. Michael O'Neill fits that profile at least but I am beginning to worry about the Scottish FA's approach for him.

Billic and Prandelli are worth considering and interviewing if interested.
