  1. I think we may have to wait a few years to see any real top quality centre backs come through. McKenna, Souttar, Porteous and maybe even Tierney will probably occupy CB positions going forward. McIntyre highly thought of too.

Leon King, Liam Morrison and there is a boy called Jamie Hamilton at Hamilton too.....but they are all around 17/18 years old and won’t be on the first team scene for another few years.

Here's the highlights, Burke makes a good run and shot just before his assist. The assist is a really well weighted pass as well. Promising signs, hopefully he can establish himself at alaves as la Liga is a good level and a good learning place for his development.

Unfortunately I remember his debut for Leipzig when he blitzed by a full back and set up a goal in his first involvement. That was about 3 seasons ago now and he never kicked on from there....sorry to burst your bubble.

  3. Was very impressed by Aaron Hickey yesterday, and at 17 years old you can see why top teams are looking at him.
Started the game at left back, but moved to right back for the second half where he was equally as good if not better.

Another real talent on our hands.

That’s what used to happen when our players weren’t good enough. I don’t think it will happen with players who are.

Bringing in foreigners and journeymen hasn’t exactly improved the quality of our league i would argue.

  5. For anyone interested, Scotland u18s have been playing in a development tournament in Turkey, where they played against top opposition from Africa and South America.

We beat Cameroon, who won the Youth African Cup of Nations, 2-0. And today we won 2-1 against Paraguay. Paraguay came third place in the South American Youth Championships. Kai Kennedy of Rangers scored a double in that game.

    Scotland weren’t full strength either.

  6. I understand everyone playing it down....but for the first time in, I would say,  DECADES we have a potentially world class player coming through.

You can throw in names like Feruz, Gauld etc but for one reason or another they were never going to reach the very top. Gilmour is different, he wants to be the best and will work his wee socks off to get there.

Some Chelsea fans are already claiming he is a better footballer than Barkley and Jorginho who are very good players in their own right!

No Henderson for Verona again tonight . Guess that's the last of the great hopes we had at this time in Europe last season gone.

Roll on the next false dawns

To be honest I never rated Henderson that highly. Talented player don’t get me wrong, but doesn’t work hard enough going back the way. Can’t get away with that at that level. Very much like Scott Allan.

Vogts failed to qualify for a major tournament; Smith failed, McLeish failed, Burley failed,  Levein failed, Strachan failed.

How much evidence do we need that the players the clubs are producing are not good enough? In the squad to play Belgium and Russia, we had three goalkeepers all playing their football in the English lower leagues. Closing down the performance schools is an outrageous act of greedy self-interest by clubs which want their hands on the money and do not care about the national team.

I really don’t get it.....is the relentless failure to not qualify for major tournaments the reason the Performance Schools were set up in the first place??!

The truth is clubs do not have the patience to develop players.... managers don’t get enough time for a start..... there’s got to be a degree of instant success or they are out on their arses within half a season. Playing kids is seen as a “risk” so they opt for experience.

I always use Levein as an example. Two seasons ago, Hearts were skelping Celtic 4-1 with a young, exciting squad of players. Add to that the experience of players like Naismith and they had a real recipe for success. Fast forward a couple of seasons, where are these young talented hungry players now? And more importantly where are Hearts now???

Am sure Levein has recently said something along the lines of Cochrane not being physically ready for the SPL yet.....best midfielder at the club though....what chance have we got with this kind of mentality?!

Then you’ve got the Stevie G’s who would rather develop other team’s players...

I like what I've seen of Porteous in action for Hibs but am worried that he seems rather injury prone.

This might be a result of how rash he is at times. He definitely doesn’t hold back.... no wonder he picks up injuries.

I was just covering my back, knowing the negativity from some on this forum. I do have every faith in Morrison. They wouldn't have signed him if he wasn't showing the ability to make it to the first team.

By the time he does break through, I'd like to think he'll be alongside a more experienced McKenna to create a solid partnership.

I reckon Morrison’s teammate at international level might have something to say about that..... Leon King is a fantastic talent too.....plus Porteous arguably has more ability and leadership qualities than McKenna

  11. I think we have seen in flashes what these players can do and that is the most frustrating thing, and part of the reason so many folk get angry and frustrated at the performances.

As soon as things aren’t going their way, they retreat into their shell and lose all confidence not only in themselves but their teammates.

We need a true leader out on the pitch.

I admire the optimism lads, I really do, but I don't share it. Another humping, another inquest but nothing really changes. Repeating the same mistakes over and over is a sure sign of insanity.

Not gonna lie what little optimism i have had is slowly draining, but am still hopeful the Performance Schools will reap rewards over next few years. Been running for 7 years now and the first batch of kids are coming through.

Hope indeed is necessary when it comes to Scotland. I put quite a bit of faith in the performance schools and I’m certain the younger players have consistently better technique than previous generations, although I’m not yet sure if they have the fighting qualities. What is encouraging is that their schooling seems to have made them fiercely patriotic and desperate to play for Scotland. That we have had a team of smallish players in terms of stature dominating and beating the top teams in Europe in recent years at youth level gives me hope that when they mature we’ll be in a good place.

Defensively the top team is in a bit of a mess and I’m now wondering whether we need to wait for Morrison of Bayern and Leon King of Rangers to emerge, both seen as outstanding prospects. Do Souttar and McKenna have enough to get us through the next 4 or 5 years?

Midfield with Gilmour, Turnbull, McTominay and Christie seems promising and there are a good few more on the horizon that look very promising. Up front we need to pin a lot of hopes on Hornby and Rudden emerging in the next couple of years.

We can still qualify and give the nation a lift, but I am optimistic that there will be a jump in quality on the horizon, even if i wouldn’t put my mortgage on it.

I think there is hope in that now some of the biggest clubs in Europe are picking up our top talent. Gilmour and Morrison are two examples of this, Hickey also being linked with Man City.

In an ideal world they would develop in Scotland and improve the quality of the domestic game, but as long as clubs put their faith more in journeymen and loan signings, lack of opportunities will always stifle them.

Ryan Porteous will definitely come into contention as well. And hopefully Hickey can develop into a top right back.

I don’t think they froze, I just think that Russia actually woke up and started to get into the game. Even before the goal we were doing well and getting at them/getting a few corners but they still looked sharp at times. Once they got the wake up call of the goal they upped their performance and pinned us back. Sometimes you just aren’t good enough to counter that.

I can completely understand this take on how the game panned out, but I genuinely believe most of our problems are psychological. Add to this a lack of leadership on the park and it’s a recipe for disaster.

Russia have some good players, but no superstars....and they have an absolute unit up front who I would imagine most centre halves would have trouble dealing with.

And what I will say about the Russians is that they never panicked when we scored....they had enough BELIEF in their own abilities to stick to a game plan, began to keep the ball better and smelt blood when we started to shit the bed and retreat into our shells.

Look what happened to us in Kazakhstan....we lose an early goal and fall to pieces!

We have good players, playing at a high level who perform week in week out for their respective clubs, but when they pull on a Scotland shirt, you can visibly see the belief draining from them.

The performance of Robertson was a snap shot of what I am talking about..... nearly EVERY TIME he received the ball his first touch was inside whereas with Liverpool he is always on the front foot.

Clarke was at a loss after the game about what happened....he watched them train all week, said he was really impressed with the quality and application, then when it comes to the match, despite getting off to a flier, as soon as they were put under a bit of pressure, they completely crumbled.

  15. I don’t think it’s too harsh to say a player simply isn’t good enough....it’s not a personal attack, he’s an honest player who tries his hardest but he is not cut out for international level football. I was at the game on Friday night and while no one had a particularly good game, O’Donnell is just too slow and immobile, and in an attacking sense he slows down the tempo of the play too much.

It may seem like a crazy idea, But back in late 2017, we played a friendly against the Netherlands. Ryan Jack played right back, we did lose 1-0, but Jack definitely put in a fine performance, a performance at right back that’s better than any I’ve seen from our natural right back O’Donnell who’s been nothing short of horrendous and is way out of his depth at international level.

At this point I never want to see SOD name near the team again. Performance after performance is just terrible from him. And I feel he’s ran out of anymore Chances, it’s clear he’s nowhere good enough and he’s only getting in the team due to facilitating the 4 at the back role. The Group is gone for us, so why not try something that actually seemed decent first try and go with Jack RB? It may have been in late 2017 but back to the point, he put in a fine shift and with the group gone it's worth trying since O’Donnell is a non starter for me at all anymore, he’s had his chances and he’s been terrible at every one.

Absolutely..... it’s through no lack of endeavour but O’Donnell just isn’t good enough, and any international team will exploit that as Russia did on Friday night.

It’s not an ideal situation, but I would definitely have Jack in at right back until Tierney gets fit.
