I worry King might not be tall enough to be a top class centre back. He may still be growing, though. He will make it in midfield if there’s a problem I’d think.

Don’t need to worry about him being tall enough, the boy is the real deal, similar levels of potential to Billy Gilmour but obv in a different position.

Also I’m understanding that Liam Morrison is moving up to Bayern’s second string and will be training with the first team soon.

  2. It’s been unfortunate for Gilmour that when he has played under Tuchel it has been in much-changed squads. Man City made 8 changes yesterday and look how disjointed they were. Sterling was honking! Can’t argue with the job Tuchel has done, but I don’t think it was a tactical masterclass. A full strength Man City team doesn’t lose last night, especially if De Bruyne plays the full 90.

Apart from Jack, who is very injury prone, have we got any defensive midfielders? I see McIntyre at Reading fulfils that role and he may well be one for the future but who else have we got what plays or could play that role. It's frequently been said that midfield is our strongest area but most of them are more offensive.

Apart from Gilmour, no one else springs to mind. McLean can do a job in there, but solid as he is, it’s very uninspiring. Unfortunately Jack has chronic injury problems that will flare up now and again. Hopefully he’ll be available for the Euro’s or we’re going to struggle.

The bottom line is we can’t play possession based football.  We can’t control the tempo of a game against a mediocre team because we can’t hold onto the ball.
Can anyone remember a Scotland team playing out from the back, putting 15-20 passes together then sticking it in the net?
Id exclude Tierney from this generalisation, he’s probably the only player we have capable of playing this style of football.

Aye if he keeps it on his left foot😝 love the guy to bits and he’s a great player, but scarily one-footed

  5. I’ve said it before, none of the midfielders last night are defensive midfielders, none of them shield the defence well enough. Israel were able to find wee pockets of space in front of our defence with ease. Jack is the stand out in that position, but stick Gilmour in there and you have someone who is not only outstanding at reading the game but who can make things tick in midfield.

Course it's not. Austria could drop points in Israel. Both they and Denmark could drop points to each other. No reason why we couldn't hold Denmark to a draw and beat them in front of a Hampden crowd.

This is the issue and has been for the past 20 odd years.... Austria won’t go and drop points in Israel. They will go there to win and not just avoid defeat.
We have the same conversations at the start of every qualifying campaign, we leave ourselves having to get results away to the top seeds which we invariably never achieve.

Thought there may have been a shift in our mentality after qualifying for the Euro’s, but that tonight was, as much as I hate to say it, the same old story.

  7. I will reserve judgement until I’ve seen him play. If he shows the passion and pride that an international player representing their country should always display on the pitch, that’s what matters to me.

He’s a distinct level up from what we currently have in my opinion.

  8. My big concern is Jack’s fitness for the Euro’s. I hope I’m wrong but think there’s a chance he’ll miss out which leaves a gaping hole in our midfield. We have some good midfielders but few natural sitters...... that’s why i would’ve taken Gilmour, he can play a 6 or an 8.

Anyone know why he's not been featuring for the under 23s? Doesn't make any sense for him not to play at all unless he's got an injury.

    Its two separate “bubbles”.

Gilmour has outgrown u23 football (ability wise) and playing probably wouldn’t do much for his development. He’s training with senior pro’s every week now, but he’s going to have to be patient.
Frustrating because if he had been playing regularly he would’ve been going to the Euro’s.

My midfield 3 would be jack, Mcginn, mctominay.  I wouldn’t put gilmour in ahead of any of them just now.

Yeah to be fair we can agree on that!😂 McTominay box-to-box rather than sitting though?
    Gilmour on the bench

he is not ready in the sense that there are better players.  If he was good enough he would be playing for Chelsea every week.

There is not a chance that say Kenny McLean is a better player than Gilmour. He’s a bit taller and more experienced obviously.... but that’s about it! Every technical aspect of the game, Gilmour is far superior.... even at just 19 years old, which should not go against him. And i don’t think McLean is a bad player at all.

  12. 15 minutes ago, Malcolm said:

What if Chelsea get injuries? He is a safety net.

Have you seen their bench recently? Looks like they would rather load it with full backs than midfield cover.... if Gilmour is going to develop into the top player he’s got the ability to become, he now needs to be playing senior games.... not taking steps back to u23 football...

If I was touchel I would do exactly the same.  He has the option to bring in gilmour in whenever he feels like. If he loaned him out he wouldn’t have that option.  Gilmour played in the fa cup game and was poor.  It’s up to billy to force his way back in. Touchel quite right won’t give a toss about the Scotland team.

So the best way to develop a young player in the first team is to drop him back to the u23’s where he is clearly several levels above? Mount went on loan to Derby, now look at him.... Harvey Elliot at Liverpool has went on loan to Blackburn and has been a standout. It’s clear to everyone bar Tuchel that Gilmour should have went out on loan if he wasn’t part of his first team plans. Barring an injury crisis he won’t even get on the bench at this rate.

  14. Just unfortunate from Gilmour’s point of view that Jorginho, Kovacic and Kante are all doing fine and they don’t seem to have any injury or fitness issues in his position despite playing 3 games a f**king week..... feel sorry for the boy

  15. Piss poor man management from Tuchel. Could be away getting regular minutes at an epl or top end championship club.... but instead been demoted to the u23s.... that’ll really develop his game..

  16. He will have learnt a lot from last night’s game. Barnsley were well-drilled pressing high up the pitch. And it didn’t help that Chelsea were continuously passing it across the back then punting up the park, completely bypassing the midfield. But the rare times that Chelsea did threaten he was more often than not involved in the build up.

The pass in the goal build up probably isn't seen as a key pass, it was a pretty simple ball. You probably cant give points for "it should have been a penalty" much the same as you don't get points for "that was never offside"

Perhaps if his  pass to Abraham had been better he would have scored.

Not sure how the weighting works, but I am sure the ability to head the ball is over rated.

I wouldn’t call the pass to James “simple”. It’s a perfectly weighted ball to a fullback running at full pelt, didn’t need to break stride or overstretch. For me it’s the moments before it, the first touch to open up then the awareness to delay the pass so the defender doesn’t have a chance to cut it out. It’s those glimpses of ability and decision making which make him a special talent.
