  1. I wonder if the old 442 Diamond might get the best out of our squad of players.. Tbh apart from Fraser we don't have top class wingers anyway, a more compact Midfield would allow us the extra men we need in there with the full backs providing width when required. This also would hopefully allow us to get the best out of McBurnie playing beside a partner perhaps Griffiths or using Frasers pace up there away from home.

                               Marshall

    Palmer.     Hanley.    Cooper.   Robertson

                             McGregor

             McTominay.             Fleck

                               McGinn

                 McBurnie.       Fraser/Griffiths

I’m going to assume that Smith, McLeish, Burley, Levein, Strachan, Clarke and most of football can’t all be wrong on this one though.

There must be some reason why you have to play with one up front, and to my untrained eye, I’d assume that with two up front, it leaves you a man down elsewhere, and therefore you lose the midfield battle and therefore lose the match?

I’d love to hear the educated explanation, but it can’t just be a coincidence that all underdogs, as well as most big teams play this way.

I’m not sure that you’re correct in saying that Scottish football is played mostly with two up front. If you are, then that would go a long way to explaining why we’ve fallen so far behind the rest of Europe!

Well I think I'm right in saying that not one of them have qualified us for a tournament playing that way have they... They have all played exactly the same way. The last time we did qualify we did so with two up front...

Look I like the 433 I think it is the future for us, all our youth teams currently play that way and if, as you say most of out top flight clubs are now playing that way, then I hope these clubs can help  these boys develop into a higher calibre of player than we have now so we can play that system properly in an attack minded way. The problem for us right now is it isn't 433 it is 451 and the 1 we have up front is doing nothing to affect the game and he is getting no support from the midfield against decent sides. We just invite pressure and have nothing for the opposition to worry about. I am only suggesting we do more to occupy the opposition defenders as currently it is far far too easy for the opposition to play against us. I like the examples of Burnley and Sheff Utd who play two up front and show it can still be done in the modern game.

I think this is a common mistake that we as fans make. ‘Just have a go.’

Playing an extra striker doesn’t necessarily equate to ‘having a go.’ It just means we have less players elsewhere, less of the ball, more problems in defence etc, etc. An extra striker isn’t much use to us away to Norway or Serbia. We need to take care of matters elsewhere on the pitch, and a second striker is a luxury we can’t afford.

I totally get this I understand the fascination with 3 attacking players in behind a centre forward but only if you have 3 real high quality attacking midfielders who can create and score and an outstanding centre forward who can basically do it all. We don't have that we offer literally nothing against decent sides. We have one striker scurrying about up top chasing lost causes, whilst the midfield 3 behind him offer no support they just sit in to create a five man midfield and protect our defence, we make it so easy for the opposition defenders to play against us its embarrassing. We offer nothing against semi decent sides. Like it or not, and it goes completely against the grain of the modern way of playing the game, but scottish football in the majority still plays with two up front. It is the way we play, the way the majority of our clubs play, the way the majority of our players have been taught to play. The 433 and 4231 are great when we're sitting watching Liverpool or Man City play it but until we have players of that quality playing for us I just don't think we are good enough to get results against good sides playing that way. We will beat San Marino or Cyprus, just, but we need to offer more in attack, occupy their defenders give them something to think about, we are too easy to play against. You can literally see the same old story unravel before it happens playing with 1 up front. If we had Lewandowski or Lukaku or Suarez fine but we don't.

I don’t see us playing with two strikers, as I think it leaves us well short elsewhere on the pitch.

It might be an outside possibility for a formation against Israel, but no way we can go away to Norway or Serbia with two strikers.

Why not? Why not just give it a go. We basically play with two up front when McGinn plays anyway. In all honesty watching us sit back and offer nothing in attack and just waiting for us to concede and eventually get beaten is a movie we have seen time and time again away from home. I'm actually fed up of us being far to cautious away from home and offering nothing. Why not actually go for it for once. We aren't playing Spain, France or Germany here. We need to give their defenders something to think about as well not just make it an easy night for them. We have one shot at this, I say go for it.

  5. I am leaning towards something like this

                               Marshall

    Palmer    Cooper    McKenna  Robertson

                    McTominay   Fleck

    McGregor                                Fraser

                   McBurnie     Griffiths

Id be looking for the full backs to provide the width with Fraser and especially McGregor drifting inside to create from there. If McGinn doesn't make it which doesn't look likely we need goals from somewhere else and Griffiths and McBurnie have goals in them as a partnership.

You couldn't build a better footballer than Oliver Burke, trouble is ability wise he's no where near top level. English championship and that's at a push.

Wee bit unfair seeing as he's just scored in a higher standard of League than that

Folk on here debating two pretty average defenders in Liam Lindsay and Tom McIntyre and completely glossing over the fact we have an absolutely outstanding 18 year old who played and excelled today for Chelsea 😒

A generational talent, who we are so fortunate to have!

Best player on the pitch for the time he was on according to Lampard today

  8. McBurnie is an interesting option but it is obvious he is far better when he plays with a partner and actually has licence to roam into different areas of the pitch. I think he is more than just a focal point front man, he likes to move wide, likes to find space and makes some good runs. He isn't a target man as such, his lanky frame kind of makes us think this is what he is. He finds space well and takes up good positions when he is given more of a licence to roam from the Centre Forward position. Would like to see him up front beside someone and with Fleck in the Midfield behind him as they link well

Eta... Sheff Utd have nailed the 352 formation it really suits them and their players and definitely suits McBurnie playing with a partner up front

He did one to coulibaly last year and loved the attention it got him, even posting pictures of it himself. Then their was the viral image of him shouting at Morelos. Get the feeling he kind of loves himself and was just out to make a (social media) name for himself today. Barisic is very lucky he tried to avoid going into the tackle and only took the studs to the high shin. Same with Coulibaly last year if he didn't jump, it would've probably been a leg breaker (can't even remember if Porteous got booked for it), I'm sure Lennon had a pop at him for it and wanted that recklessness out of his game. It seems he has gone the other way and is reveling in it.

Until he massively sorts out this rashness and leave a marker on them attitude out, he won't ger far in the game.

    Tbf he got the ball

Never played there so impossible to say on paper.

But realistically would be a waste as he likes to cut in on his Left with his strong foot so for me wouldn’t get anywhere near the best out of his ability aswell as Forrest Fraser and upcoming prospect Johnston being able to play there.

with Christie it’s either play on the right or in the middle depending on the formations here’s my ideal team.

    McLaughlin

    Tierney-Souttar-Cooper-Robertson

    McTominay

    Christie-McGinn-McGregor-Forrest

    Griffiths

if Fraser or Johnston are unreal form come March then it’s debatable but this would be my ideal team as of right now.

I like this team, but as a keen Sunderland fan I can confirm McLaughlin hasnt been anywhere near his best this season unfortunately so for me Marshall ahead of him and I'd happily go with that team

It doesn't always work like that.

For every Darren Fletcher we've had come through at a big club there are countless players like Daniel Galbraith, Warren Cummings, Ryan Flynn, Islam Feruz and Michael Stewart.

Then there are plenty of players like James McArthur that have had really good careers in England after playing over 150 games in Scotland before moving south.

I'd suggest playing competitive football early on plays a much bigger part in a players development than being coached at a big club where very few players reach the first team.

I understand it is different for every player but we don't have many success stories of players moving south young and doing well.  I am hopeful that the Performance Schools are setting up these young players to make more of a success of their careers but we will have to see whether this crop of young teenagers are making the right move.

Andy Robertson the other fine example of that. I totally agree to be honest it can work both ways, but for the extremely talented youngsters such as Billy Gilmour who genuinely aspire to be one of the best players in the world it makes sense to go and  get the best coaching and play against some of the best player sof their age group and prove how good they are. It takes a very strong mentality though at such a young age to believe you can go down to some of the academys down there and stand out. There are many ways for players to develop I suppose but the coaching and standard down south will be far superior to anything our clubs have up here, it is the crucial age of around 18, 19 which Billy Gilmour is at now when they need to start playing competitive games and start to carve out a proper career in men's football. The standard of coaching they receive before that obviously depends on what club they serve their time at.

  12. Let's be honest though if the boy is ever going to make it to the highest reaches of the game it will be through the best coaching he can possibly find and playing against and beside some of the best players he possibly can through his age groups. Unfortunately for any of our top young players to reach the very top of the game now they have to leave Scotland as in Global terms we are quite sub standard. He will learn far more at Man City youths than he will playing against youth teams in Scotland. It is a positive for me that all these massive clubs seem to be pin pointing Scotland as a breeding ground right now for top talent. How much is that down to the performance schools I wonder

From what I've heard Hickey needs a good shake attitude wise. Absolutely massive time.

If true he probably needs the right manager to guide him. He has been really really poor ever since all the transfer speculation

He has to be at the very least be in the squad. Said it pre injury as well, he was ripping my club a part at times (rangers).

Definitely 1 of 4 youngsters I'd have in every 23/25 man squad. Other 3 are Gilmour, Porteous and Turnbull (when fit)

The boy has a talent none of the others have, he can produce something out of nothing. Watched him for a long time in the youths for Scotland and he is now translating it to senior football with ease. I was worried how his recent injury would affect him but there was no need to worry at all. If we need a spark from somewhere he is the man to look to.

ETA Also agree with your other choices for youngsters integrating into the squad, all have talent

Why is this thread still going, you don't have to drop any of them.

Two different formations that we played against Albania and Israel we played all three.

If we have played any better since, let me know.

McTominay and McGinn are easy replacements for McGregor and Armstrong.

You have to drop one of them for Mikey Magic Johnston

Wales midfield options for last international:

    Aaron Ramsey

    Joe Allen

    Harry Wilson

    Daniel James

David Brooks would've been in squad aswell but injured currently.

Actually a good example there is Dylan Levitt. Only turned 19 over the latest international break. No games for Man. United yet (can't remember if he played in Astana in the week) and hasn't been loaned out but Wales getting him involved. Very similar case to Gilmour when you look at it.

I think given Billy is on the fringes I'd imagine Chelsea will loan him out in January, either to Holland or a championship team. Hopefully he can start playing week in week out and be a new option for March.

Pretty sure Terry Taylor got called up for a squad gathering not long ago, young boy born in Aberdeen, signed for Wolves from the Don's not long ago. Missed the boat there

It’ll be fine, our quality midfield will boss most teams

Only the best in the business can boss most teams. We can boss a few teams, and compete with most teams. Our Midfielders are performing with quality right now though so here's hoping.

Mitrovic Is more than a championship striker, he's excellent and better than anything we have including a fit Griffith's.

We have the best centre back in the Championship to combat him though...
