Huh.. Dan Ogden is still employed by ESPN? I'm surprised by that. A month or so ago he was caught on air mocking Harry Kane's speech.

Thought he would've been fired. Apparently not.

There's a reason why SAF gave him a lifetime ban from Manchester United press conferences.

    Anyway.

I have a feeling that Euro 2020 will be cancelled. If you add in domestic leagues and cups as well as the World Cup qualifiers, the wiggle room is shrinking by the day.

    Money talks though

My only criticism of him is that he always looks to be playing within himself. His range of passing is exceptional but more often than not he plays it safe, he never seems to sprint and seems content to hang around outside the box when its on to burst into it.

Now this might be the tactics but sometimes a player needs to make his own decisions within a game.

It is definitely tactics and at times it looks as though he has been over coached to stay disciplined. He started as a striker, for me he naturally would like to go forward, box to box, arriving in the opposition box, scoring goals, I think if they let him of the leash a bit he could be a bit like Steven Gerrard, although I don't think he has Gerrard's passing ability.

If Craig MacGillivray is playing Championship football with Portsmouth next season then it would be stupid not to give him a couple of games and see if he is up to it. The lad has said in the past that he is really keen to play for us.

I don't know why he is still being touted, he was 1st touted about 2 seasons ago, and he is still playing League 1. Not good enough. McCrorie or Doohan have to progress quickly or we are up shit creek when Marshall retires. McLaughlin and McGilllivray are not the standard required, certainly nowhere near the standard we have had over the last 10 to 15 years

Personally I wouldn’t change it.  Midfield 3 of jack, mcgregor, Mcginn.  If we had baresi and Maldini to come in at centre half, I might be tempted to move mctominay in to midfield with jack and Mcginn. Currently I see gilmour competing with mcgregor for his spot, only if he gets game time.

Sensible post pretty spot on to be fair

I don’t see Gilmour the same way you do. In my mind I want Gilmour in possession, controlling the tempo of the game in the middle 1/3 and the opposition half. I want him using his brain and mobility to be constantly probing and searching for weakness/opportunities to exploit in their halve of the pitch. That would mean someone sitting behind him in front of the defence. Early days but it will be interesting to see his role at club and international level as he matures over the next few years.

If you were playing a 3 of him McGinn and McTominay, for him to move further forward you would have to drop McGinn or McTominay for Jack. McGinn isn't a holding Midfielder and certainly not a player who will receive the ball from defence and dictate play. I wouldn't pigeon hole Gilmour, I think he can play anywhere in Midfield but so far Chelsea see him as a deep lying playmaker and right now we have a position available there as a replacement for McGregor in the two in front of our defence beside Jack. My preference though would be to also push McTominay into Midfield instead of Jack and let Gilmour sit a little deeper so McTominay can go box to box...

    either.           Jack.

             Gilmour.              McGinn.

    Or.                 McTominay.     Gilmour.                                                  McGinn

Leeds style of play is going to leave them very open at the back, the goals against collum doesn't reflect on Coopers ability.

Agreed, the Leeds defence was left wide open time and time again. The game was won in Midfield, Leeds always play man for man all over the pitch and United's Midfielders won their personal battles snapped into tackles won the ball and produced quick turnarounds

Great performance by mctominay, hopefully keeps the haters off his back. One minute he's great next he's terrible according to the fans on message forums. Man utd starting to look strong and mctominay can be part of that going forward. Let's hope he follows up this performance with more great games.

Only negative to that game was Leeds look very open at the back which doesn't reflect well on Cooper. I reckon they will probably look to upgrade the centre back position in the future if they stay up.

Was fantastic yesterday absolutely brilliant midfield performance, it had everything. Just shows that when let of the leash a little he can be a great attacking threat also. Always thought there were goals in him, he should be allowed to play box to box for Scotland in my opinion. Him and McGinn can easily alternate box to box and have Jack or Gilmour sitting behind them.

Gilmour wants to be too involved to be sitting deep. One of his biggest attributes is his movement, mobility, he’s a dynamo in the middle of the park. If you have him sitting deep, you take that away from him and replace it with the responsibility of having to be disciplined and limit his movement. Let McGinn sit, especially as he gets older. Let Gilmour have the freedom to roam around the midfield and control the game.

Pirlo controlled every game he ever played in from the same deep role Gilmour plays for Chelsea

Armstrong, McGregor, and some good young talent at Bayern, Man City that will hopefully come through.

Up front seems a problem and probably my biggest worry is the centre halve spots. If we can find centre halves that match the quality of the players of the other positions within  the team/squad, we could be entering a period of real resurgence of the national team

The players we have at Bayern and Man City aren't even regulars in their youth sides at these clubs yet so let's not hold a torch for them like we have done for the likes of Jack Harper in the past, they have a long long way to go. Had high hopes for Liam Morrison but looking through Bayern's u19 lineups he is never in them so don't know what's happened there. Barry Hepburn got injured in his second game or something unfortunately so hopefully he gets back soon. The boys at Man City seem to start now and again but then drop to the bench. Hope they all go on to match Gilmour though

I disagree, I don’t want Gilmour deepest, I want McGinn holding, winning the ball back, doing most of the physical work. You get Gilmour doing that and he won’t be as effective as McGinn and he’ll pick up a lot of injuries because he’s not so well built. I agree, most of the play should go through him, but higher up the pitch. McTominey would be my box to box midfielder.

Gilmours job wouldn't be to win the ball back and do most of the physical work that would be McTominays beside him. Gilmours job is to dictate play in the same mould Xabi Alonso did from a slightly deeper role, the same role he plays for Chelsea. McGinn is a massive threat pushed further forward did he not finish our highest scorer in an advanced position this year

We have a lot of talent in most of the midfield roles, a bit sparse in the defensive/holding role. In the not too distant future you could go for a midfield 3 of

    Gilmour    McGinn  McTominey

    McGinn as the holding mid

Same 3 for me but no way should McGinn be holding. Gilmour should be deepest everything should go through him. McTominay beside him and McGinn advanced

Glad to see someone else bring  Steven Caulker up again.  Good to hear the guy finally seems to have found some stability in his life. I don't think there's much doubt that at his best he has the quality to represent us.

He actually asked to be considered last year when we where struggling so what's not to like 😉

Why, he's played for England, he's English. If England came in again to play for them in the Euros he would choose them over us again, why do you want someone who isn't truly committed in the squad over guys who are. Imagine Gallagher or Considine losing their place to a guy like this, it would be a disgrace

Watched the Sheff Utd game at the weekend purely because McBurnie and Burke played up top as a partnership - Sheff Utd should have scored 3 or 4 and they looked dangerous together.  The whole team looks absolutely jinxed though and would imagine the manager hasn't got much longer.

Good header from Burke good save from keeper first half. He needs a run of games

Poor league - do me a favour. Pretty much any top flight Belgian team would finish least third in the SPFL.

Exactly, still an ignorance from some people regarding other leagues in Europe, the Scottish Premier League is ranked 14th in Europe and that is because of 2 teams, the rest are dug meat

  15. Out with the Premier League we have had 'players in action' in the 4th, 6th and 8th best leagues in Europe consecutively now for the last few weeks and playing well. These guys are starters for their clubs in leagues that are a higher standard than our League in 14th. Is there a strong argument these guys should be included very soon and given a chance. On paper it's a no brainer when you see a guy playing in Serie A who is comfortable at left back and right back surely he should get in ahead of others in our squad. Hendry playing in  Belgium at a higher level than a number of our other centre backs and gaining wonderful praise. And Gauld starting to show his class in the 6th best league in Europe!

Paul McGinn. Has played RWB for Hibs i believe and has been in the best form of his career. Scored a double for Hibs the other day. Better option for me then those 2. I also would have Forrest as a back up RWB if it came to it as he played there regularly for Celtic.

Rather than have another slot for one of those players giving how hard it is leaving others out.

McCrorie would be a better right wing back than all of them and he's primarily a central mid!

Jack Hendry played well for us.

Celtic could do a lot worse than have him back right now also.

Definitely will be back in the squad at some point.

Gauld, Morgan & Hendry all seem to be performing well abroad now.

Morgan is another interesting one. Seems to be playing really well over there and could be a good option for us as a back up to Fraser or Christie in that position just of Dykes or if we change things up out wide. Wouldn't mind giving him another go although I still have reservations after his poor loan spell at Sunderland.

  18. 1 hour ago, er yir macaroon said:

Wouldn't right him off, he has great natural attributes for a central defender, pace  strength, height, confidence was just shot to pieces at Celtic. Davie Weir came good for us later in his career, maybe with some experience behind him and confidence Jack Hendry can get in about the squad again it's never too late. He actually played well for Scotland in the games he did play.

  19. More than just an alternative to Dykes or McBurnie I think we need an alternative to the system when things aren't going to plan. When we go 1 nil down or when we need to break a team down we struggle. We are a little thin on creativity, most of our chances come from our pressing, or feeding off second balls. When this doesn't work we really need players who can come off the bench and change the game and apart from Christie and Fraser there is no one else really who could unlock a team with a pass or bit of skill. I think we need to look at players such as Ryan Gauld, Billy Gilmour, Mikey Johnston if they are all fit and on form as players who could potentially come on and open teams up.

There is no evidence it woupdnt work here nor is there any it would. It hsnt been tried in scotland.

Im asking how it would be implemented in scotland.

So far weve had the idea of playing the best young talent from 2 to 4 clubs against part time players. Id rather the top prospects played in the championship or lower premiership.

I also dont think it would work because big clubs from ouwith scotland have such a vast reach in terms of scouting, they sign up youngsters long before they used to.

Lets use billy gilmour as the example, had their been a Rangers colt team, would he have stuck around to play against elgin? No he still wouldve went to chelsea

No your right there is no evidence yet until it has been tried, so why not try something that hasn't done before there is more to gain than lose.

I also think you are right that, although they should start in league 2 which is only fair, I don't think a colt team should be held back if they win that league, I think they should be allowed to be promoted as far as the Championship, that would be great for their development.

Players like Billy Gilmour are a different case altogether, they are targeted as potentially elite level players at an early stage, no harm in them getting picked up and trained by elite level clubs if that's the road they want to go down, but not everyone is a Billy Gilmour and picked up at that age, youngsters develop in different ways at different stages in their career. There doesn't have to be a set route to the top but opening up as many routes as possible gives us a greater possibility of developing more top players.

Some will get the early move like Gilmour. Some will benefit more from the loan system. Some would benefit from a Colts set up. Let's open up as many avenues as possible for our youngsters to progress
