    World Rankings

    Scotland 44 - Lithunia 117

    Wales 10 - Georgia 137

Maybe not as bad as we thought

That also looks like a very even group between Wales, Austria, Serbia and Ireland. Hopefully they all take points off each other and second place in this group finishes with a low total.

Sixteen is probably the minimum you can finish second with - ten points (excluding the Malta games) will be border-line to getting a play-off spot. Realistically, if this results occurred, we would have to convert a draw in one of the Slovakia/Slovenia games to a win to be safely inside the play-offs and it would make us more likely to finish second, in the first place.

Agreed. I don't think by drawing with Lithuania the damage has been done, as long as we win in the Away game. Slovenia have already dropped 2 points against them and I can see Slovakia dropping a couple of point against them. We need to be beating our main rivals for second place and like you say, this will in turn give us enough points to secure a play off place.

  3. After last nights disappointing draw with Lithuania I'm interested in finding out where everybody thinks we will end up in this group. At the start of every campaign I like to do a prediction for each game in our group and a final table of where I think we will finish.

From now now until the end I reckon the results will be:

    Slovakia  Away - D

    England Away   - L

    Slovenia Home - W

    England Home -  L

    Lithuania Away -  W

    Malta Home      - W

    Slovakia Home  - D

    Slovenia Away.  - D

This would leave us with 16 points which I think would possibly be enough for us to sneak into 2nd place however I think 16 points would not be enough to secure a play off position.

  4. To be fair to him I think he did have a decent game, held it up well, won us countless amounts of free kicks in decent positions and was very unlucky with his efforts on goal. I still would have started with Griffiths but can't complain at the way Martin played.

  5. It'll be really interesting to see how we are impacted by the new Nations League that'll come into place after the 2018 World Cup.

If it was drawn now we'd be in a 'league' with: Norway, Slovenia, Iceland, Wales, Israel, Scotland, Albania, Montenegro, Northern Ireland, Serbia.

So a mini group with 2 or 3 of those teams. We could take 6 points of any of those teams home and away (though, sadly, we wouldn't) so that'd perhaps give us a better chance of topping the mini group.

Extrapolating that, and removing the current teams that have qualified through the regular means, then ranking the 4 best teams from this last qualifying to imagine they would be the 4 teams to get into our Nations League play-offs, that'd leave us in a play-off situation with Norway, Slovenia, and Israel to qualify for Euro 2020. Which would work out Norway Vs Israel, and Slovenia Vs Scotland. One off game, then winners play another one-off play-off match.

Convoluted, but in theory qualifying for the 2020 Euro's could be as 'easy' as 6 matches Vs 'pot three' opposition.

Not a completely impossible challenge. That's on top of trying to finish top 2 in whatever regular qualifying group we get drawn into for it as well.

I've had a wee look at this myself and follow it up until it says the winners of each group make up the play offs. You would think most of the A section would be already qualified and some of the B section would have already qualified so would that mean the remaining teams in the section go into the play offs instead or would it be the next best ranked team within the mini group?

I then can't figure out how the seedlings work in the draw for the 16 teams left in the play offs. You any ideas?

  6. Just had a look through our qualifying campaigns back to 1996 and here's a few things I've gathered.

In 1996 and 1998 when we qualified for these major tournaments, we averaged 2.3 points per game. We were in pots 3 and 2 respectively so there aren't any excuses on that basis. Since then however we have only averaged 2 points per game in one campaign which was the euro 2008 qualifying campaign which included Italy and France.

In the last 4 qualifying campaigns the highest points per game average we have achieved is 1.5 Ppg which was the campaign just ended. Who knows maybe the qualifying campaigns for 2010, 2012, and 2014 were the dark days and we may be slowly rising from it.

the average points per game we achieve doesn't really seem to differ too much with pot places. Since 1996 we've averaged 1.8 PPG when in pot 1, 1.8 PPG when in pot 2, 1.66 PPG when in pot 3, and 1.53 PPG when in pot 4.

I thought the decline may have been down to increased competition over the years with the introduction of new members but there's not really an argument for that. Since we last qualified in 1998 Yugoslavia have been replaced by Serbia and Montenegro, and Kazakhstan, Andorra and Gibralter (euros only) have been added.

The data suggests we will get 17 points in the next campaign, which is probably border line play off place.

  7. The first verse should be played with bagpipes and all as it is but the second verse they should stop and let just the players and crowd sing. I hate the second verse being played in bagpipes

  8. Fair dues, Greenie, you are a good lad, and a nice guy, I'm happy for you, but obviously gutted at our weakness, - and guess you'll be jumping after our diaster showing.

    I'll go for

    Ireland 2 Georgia 0

    Poland 5 Gibraltar 0

    Scotland 0 Germany 2

    Scotland 1 Poland 1

    Ireland 0 Germany 2

    Georgia 3 Gibraltar 0

    Poland 1 Ireland 1

    Gibralar 0 Scotland 3

    Germany 2 Georgia 1

    I think that would put

    Germany 25

    Poland 22

    Ireland 16

    Scotland 15

I would go for something like this. Another hugely disappointing outcome against poland.

  9. There is hope I think. We have some good young players coming through and they will be better than the players we have playing just now. The problem we have is that we are not arrogant enough or confident enough. When Maloney gets flagged in the first 20 minutes yesterday he should be screaming at the linesman saying was I guck offside, and done it in a way where the next time it happens the linesman will give him the benefit of the doubt in a tight situation. Instead he wanders away without even challenging the decision when he was onside.

  10. I think he would do another U turn and take up a final opportunity if Strachan were to offer him it. I think he will turn out to be a really good player, probably not with chelsea but a decent European side or premier league side. Just hope he matures and makes the right decision for himself and Scotland.

  11. For me it has to be Wales, Iceland, Scotland, Faroe Islands, Moldova, and San Marino. I think this would possibly be the first time ever that we have been the most populated country in the group (in my life time anyway).

  12. Greece are awful and just lost to the Faroes. Again.

I do see what you're saying but why don't you think Poland won't beat Ireland? If they're not good enough to beat Ireland at home, why are they good enough to take a point off Scotland at Hampden?

I'd rather go to Portugal knowing a win will send us to France without having to worry about what happens in Warsaw.

You can't really look at results or opposition in these friendlies or we would have looked pretty awful against Qatar. I think we will qualify automatically personally, and I do think we will do it at home to Poland, but if we go into that game after a defeat to Germany then the game v Poland is must win for automatic qualification. A draw v germany gives us a bit of cushion, takes the pressure off a bit and puts it on Poland, and gives us a likely chance of getting through even if we draw with Poland at home. I think Poland would bottle it at home to Ireland if they had to win and Ireland are a very difficult team to beat so I think they would do us a favour.

  13. Why would we want to draw at home with a team that is below us in the world rankings?

Poland have done nothing spectacular in this group apart from beat a German side that pummelled their goal for 90 minutes and didn't manage to score.

Poland were average at best against us and against Ireland in Dublin.

We need to win our home games if we want to qualify with the possible exception of the Germany game.

Have a bit of ambition, man.

I fully expect us to win in Georgia, and would fancy our chances against Poland at home which would all but Put us through. I agree that Poland aren't world beaters but I was impressed with how dangerous they look going forward against Greece during the week (without Lewandowski) although they didn't score at all. All I'm saying is if we were to sneak an unlikely draw against Germany after beating Georgia, then we would not NEED to beat Poland and a draw may be good enough if it's less than 2-2, as I can't see them beating ireland at home. Anyway it's all ifs and buts so we will need to wait and see if we have the bottle in September.

  14. If we could sneak a 0-0 draw, then a draw against Poland in the next home game would be a good result providing we beat Georgia away. That would mean poland would need to beat ireland in the last game.

  15. 19pts won't be enough to be best 3rd place team as you have to deduct 6pts for the 2 Gibraltar games giving us 13pts. We will need a minimum of 14pts to have a chance of that which means winning one of the Poland or Germany games. This would likely see us qualify automatically anyway especially if it's against Poland.

Agree with this. I've been looking at group A and the fixtures remaining and just can't see any of the top 3 in that group finishing with less than 19 points. I think we will end up with either 18 points or 20 depending on the poland at home result. With 18 we will be in the play offs and with 20 we'll be through automatically.

  16. I think the automatic 3rd place will come from that group so I think we'll avoid them or the Czechs. I wouldn't wabt Russia or Ukraine but apart from that the playoffs look decent
