  1. Worst performance since the Burley era. We get 40-50% out of Tierney and Robertson in this system, would be better choosing one or the other to get 100% out of them. Would allow us a shape to play our more naturally attacking players like Forrest (and when he comes back) Fraser etc, need to scrap the 5-3-2 or disaster is pending.

Think the problem with Griffiths is McLeish already stated that Naisy would be his first choice striker in Israel not omitting im from Albania match. Not a wise thing to do. What if Naisy got injured and he was relying on Griffiths to take over? McLeish should have waited until the meet up and then assessed each player. Really poor man management but also toys out of the pram for our erstwhile number 9.

He never said he would be first choice striker in Israel though, the headlines in the piss poor newspaper said it but all McLeish said was it would be hard to drop a a striker who performed well but it’ll be down to form and fitness.

Que someone asking Griffiths about something that was never said and building a media crisis narrative.

    Always preferred Gordon.

In what measure is McGregor in better form?

He’s unbeaten in 10 European matches and is consistently making outstanding saves in big matches. The clean sheet numbers you posted are a misnomer.

McGregor kept a clean sheet against Albania. Why should he be dropped for the Israel game?

It’s Pasta Mick you’re replying to, he thinks he should be dropped because McGregor is the Rangers GK and Craig Gordon is the Celtic GK.

Im comfortable with both but McGregors been in better form imo and did nothing to get dropped against Albania.

And that's why we never qualify for any thing. If you have the choice of an average 22 year old or an average 30 year old you should always choose the former. We do not have any players over the 30 that have ever been more than average so we should have been taking chances on younger prospects, Cairney for example or Shinnie perhaps. They are both at an age now with next to no international experience but they could have if Strachan had been in any way forward thinking.I am sure you can name a few players with potential that should be on the bench ahead of Shinnie now

If Cairney does get in the squad he will not get on the pitch to prove he is any good until others have proved they aren't good enough, that is our mentality

The reason we don’t qualify for anything has nothing to do with the age of the squad. Northern Ireland fielded half a pensioners eleven at the Euros.

Disagree.... I don’t care how old they are young or old, pick the best players. Ffs snodgrass is only 31... hardly old.  Using the same logic you wouldn’t pick Naismith who was one of our best players in the last game.   McGregor is 37... our best goalie.  Best players young or old.  I like snodgrass.

If every player in the squad was 36 and we get to the Euros I won’t care a jot what age they are, if a young player is good enough they’ll get in ahead of the experienced guys like Robertson and Tierney did.

I'd imagine he gets booed because he's a wee lying, judas cunt. Not just because he plays with Rangers.

I wouldn't have booed him on Friday though.

Funny with all the old firm stuff that goes on the most abuse on this forum is always from petty Aberdeen fans.

The common denominator for me is that the three of them are/were shite...that said, boo'ing a player representing Scotland is baffling

In my time I have seen a multitude of abhorrently bad players playing for Scotland and none of them were booed for “being shite”. Absolute nonsense.

I agree. If you can't let club issues go for 90 mins then internationals aren't for you.

That being said, I do find it slightly amusing that the complainants are the same group who used to congregate in the west stand booing Celtic players (who were some of the best in Europe at the time) and singing the sash.

I’m the complaininant here and I’ve neber done that.

    ”Whataboutery” at its finest.

That’s exactly how I see things.

Some but not all rangers fans are absolutely desperate for this to be because jack is a rangers player.

I wouldn’t boo him unless he had the gun top on but if he comes on for Scotland that takes a back seat.

There’s been players booed that aren’t rangers players too.

    What’s a gun top???

  11. Was he booed onto the pitch on Friday because he’s a Rangers player?

its not the first time this has happened and there was a fair amount of whataboutery the 2 pervious occasions with Black at Easter Road and Jack again at Pittodrie.

The standard response I’ve had was “its because he’s crap” but I’ve seen players play for Scotland who are so bad they make Ryan Jack look world class and none of them were booed.

Keep the club pish to your Saturday afternoons and turn up at Hampden to get behind EVERY player, I’d never boo a player for Scotland because I didn’t like him or his club domestically. Disgrace.

Feel a wee bit better now England have been done similar to us except they didn't  gift them goals. They too mistakenly thought they could go toe to toe...

They played defensively with the 5 and low block until they went behind, didn’t open up and go “toe to toe” until they were losing late in the game.

  13. The fans that booed Jack coming on are a disgrace btw, no Scotland player should be booed because of what club they play for.

Genuine apathy to the team and the game, don’t even feel that down because I genuinely have no connection to this Scotland “team” embarrassing performance.

Scotland played well to score 3 goals considering Andorra just sat deep the whole game, very mature and patient display. Can clearly see the talent Gilmour and Johnston have. Gilmour glides along the park constantly finds space to receive the ball when there was very little given from Andorra. Our second goal was great play. Hornby is a talent and Johnston has so much potential, very positive and these 3 boys are 19 and 17

I like Johnston too, Middleton (who did really well for the 19’s tonight) plays the same position and is the same age as Johnston and offers something different. Johnston likes to cut in and drag full-backs inside and Middleton is more old fashioned and bombs down the line to deliver with a natural left out.

Its a nice thought that maybe these 2 will provide different types of options on that side in years to come perhaps even going into the senior set-up. And we can change depending on the opposition we are up against.

  15. Porteus and Bates with McCrorie sitting in front is really solid at 21’s level and I’d like to see that pairing tested against the stronger sides, Hornby has potential to be our first really regular 21’s goalscorer since Rhodes and we don’t lack midfield talent at this level either (I really rate Gilmour and think he’s destined for the top).

Wasn’t a sparkling performance but quite excited to see how this group develops especially with so many players missing tonight. Would be good to have a competitive 21’s group for the first time in a long while, it’s been our biggest problem as a national set-up.

  16. It worries me how many off form players we have going into this window, the Celtic core that served us well in the second half of the last campaign seems to be breaking up and Robertson aside we have very few core members of our squad performing at a consistently high level. Even our midfield which used to be nailed on to be trusted with a settled 3 seems to be disjointed in terms of who we go with and being in-form.

    Hello!

My name is Sindre Leganger and I work as journalist for Norwegian newspaper Aftenposten. I'm writing about the supporter culture for our national team. We haven't qualified for a championship since 2000, and the support for our team is currently not strong. However - If I've understood correctly, Scotland has not qualified for a championship since 1998 (when we were in the same group!). Yet the Tartan Army stands strong. I'm trying to understand why that is. What are you guys doing right, that we are doing wrong? Who should I talk to? Can you help me with contact information?

Hope hear from you, and have a great day!

Hi Sindre, that’s a very interesting topic and welcome to the forum!

The Scots are world champions at talking ourselves down so if you come across pessimists about our support then don’t be surprised.

I think home attendances and our overall feeling for the national team are not inexplicably linked, for instance Scotland actually has (per capita) the best attended domestic top division in Europe and has a disproportionately high number of Football supporters.

Scotland and Norway are probably similar in that we’re both waiting for that magical moment where we can reach a major tournament and capture the imagination of the nation again, there’s an undoubted pessimism about the teams failings and Football in Scotland in general but I still think we’re on cusp of something perhaps in the euros.

Seems like you need a football revolution in Norway to get people excited again.

I watched this today on iplayer and thought it was very good. Very fair to Ally too; the press built him up and then he took all the flak. He was very naive as we all now know and the stuff about hotel and training facilities was not known by fans until much later. We did have a great squad - as we did in 74 and 82 - but we had gone off the boil and McLeod should have changed things earlier.

Fair play to the folk who went over though. I regret allowing myself to fall at first hurdle as mentioned in previous post. Just as in the late sixties as a wee boy in Dunfermline when I did not think about the Pars NOT playing in a European competition, I did not imagine my nation not being at a World Cup finals. We even had the luxury then of dismissing the Euros as unimportant. We have to go to another WC finals very soon, especially for all youze who have never experienced it. For the record, I believe we will get to Qatar. Not saying we’ll win it mind. If we do qualify, make every effort to go. I am lucky enough to have been and, however excruciating it was to get knocked out in first stage, especially in  ‘82, they were fantastic experiences. Wonderful memories and 77/78 was brilliant even though I did not go over to Argentina. Wembley, Hampden, Anfield. Only 2 other teams in our qualifying group. 4 games. Changed days.

I’m 24 and it seems almost unthinkable to me what Scotland being in a major tournament is actually like. Its almost like it’s in the back of my head that we just won’t ever do it again, I don’t think I even feel the crushing disappointment that I used to when we inevitably don’t qualify.

The energy of the country playing in a World Cup looked incredible. Must have been some experience.
