  1. Both the Daily Record and Sun are reporting that McLeish will be sacked tomorrow.

not just because of Kazakhstan but unfortunately due to a “troubling incident” that sounds like a health concern before the San Marino game.

I wanted him sacked too but I hope his health concerns aren’t anything too serious and wish him all the best, gave us some great memories in his first spell but just didn’t work out this time.

Lets see how this ages when the Russians and the Belgians play on the same surface.

Let’s read my original post first then see how your own post ages. I don’t think international football should be played on AstroTurf but it’s not the reason we lost tonight. It’s a horrible surface to play football on.

Piss off with this horrible surface pish. They’re professional sportsmen ffs.

If you asked a golfer or a cricketer to play on AstroTurf they’d tell you to fuck off. People like you seem to think football exists in a bubble where the surface of play doesn’t affect the type of game you’re likely to play.

Tennis players might be happy to play on different surfaces but it always suits certain players etc.

  4. If I’m honest I don’t think Kazakhstan are worst team we’ve dropped a result against. All fully professional players, on a horrible surface 6 time zones away, possibly our worst performance tonight but drawing with a fully part-time side like Faroe Islands was an even worse result IMO.

Think a lot of ignorance was in play going into tonight tbh, Kazakhstan are a poor side but a huge banana skin and not a San Marino etc.

That abscess in the mouth is clearly complete bollocks to save him the mammoth journey and a tough game when they’re after the title.

Disappinting & our team looks fairly talentless and short of creativity or goals.

Utter utter garbage, he did everything he could to make the flight. Unbelievable commitment when you read the story, he wasn’t allowed to fly with it so needed the surgery and can’t sort another flight at such short notice.

Barring the tour he missed because he was playing in the champions league final Robertson has never been unavailable for a squad since his debut 6 years ago which is incredible really.

Don't think Souttar has progressed as much as we had hoped he would so, for me he s the last resort for central defence.

McGinn has to play but I would prefer to have Mctominay  or McGregor behind him in a similar formation to the one used in Albania.

In fact it is becoming almost impossible to pick a starting eleven out of what is left that suits our recent formations.

Probably end up with three at the back.

Don’t see any reason to change the Bates and McKenna partnership from the last 2 matches, try to keep it as settled as possible when we’re already missing players. They did fine.

Bain will be fine against Kazakhstan. He has played in Europe for Celtic against tougher opposition than Kazhakstan.

Im Not worried about bain stepping up at all.

    And been beaten convincingly.

I don’t rate Bain at all tbh.

  8. Anybody know what’s the situation with the kid at Rangers Matthew Shiels? Seems like he’s evoking the same rules as Dembele, was in the Northern Ireland squads but was called up to the Scotland 19’s squad today and seems to have switched back.

No, you're wrong. We played 3-5-2 in all 6 of the matches we played at 96 and 98. I still have them on VHS. Craig Brown played 3-5-2 every single match he was in charge. He said that he got the idea from Germany and he was staunch in his convictions that he was going to play with it no matter what.

The opening match at the World cup against Brazil we played with a three - Hendry, Boyd and Calderwood - Burley and Dailly were wingbacks -  https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x542gtp

Also against Norway we played with the same three at the back, John Motson confirms it - They were Hendry, Calderwood and Boyd - https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x5v0c3c - with Burley and Dailly as wingbacks.

I honestly don't know why people seem to think three at the back is complicated. Who is it complicated for? The fans or the players? If it wasn't complicated for Hendry, Boyd and Calderwood then why should it be complicated for our current crop of center backs? Blackburn played with a 4-4-2, as did Spurs and as for Boyd, he was left back for Celtic. I flatly refuse to believe that our current players haven't got the adaptability of the players who played 20 years ago.

Just this weekend three (weirdly enough) teams played with three at the back in the SPL, so I have no idea why some people seem so adamant that it's some sort of medieval formation that no one uses anymore. Livingston aren't doing too badly, just off beating Hearts 5:0 and having the third best defensive record in the SPL.

Any formation including the variants you’re discussing can work if it suits your personnel.

Scotlands 2 most dangerous players at the moment though are wingers, so it would be illogical to me to play a system that prevents us from getting them on the park in their natural positions.

It's sad, really quite pathetic but the truth is that Scotland is one of the most conservative minded footballing nations in Europe.

The last few years have seen the tide perhaps begin to turn but we still have far, far too many managers and coaches here in Scotland who are completely resistant to change, don't like "foreign ideas" and just like things as they are "cause that's how we've always done it".

There is still a deep rooted opposition to adopting radical new ways of training, fitness, diet right to the match-day tactics and strategy. It's appalling.

Don't anyone dare give me any of that shite about how "Scotland taught the world how to play football you know" or "Denis Law and Jim Baxter never needed any of that." What can you do with people who think like that ? I don't know.

And what are you basing this on? Our top clubs all have modern set-ups and have made brave managerial  appointments in the last few years to do the exact opposite of the nonsense you’re spouting.

if you’re talking about clubs like Livingston or Hamilton then you’ll find these types of small clubs in every league in the world trying to punch above their weight by doing the basics well.

Nigel Quashie hit the bar in the game I'm sure. Remember it being a midweek and me going for a nightshift afterwards.

That’s the one, I watched highlights of the game back recently and we dominated them first half and in the second we dropped off and settled for a draw to save berti’s job.

Tuesday is a normal day for midweek football but I agree that the ‘week of football’ in general is pish. As are some of the bizarre kick off times.

I understand the week of football rules but does anyone know why N.Ireland have both had afternoon weekend kick-offs that don’t really fit the schedule and we never have?

Would love a Saturday afternoon 3PM.

Albania are ranked 60th and Georgia are ranked 92nd. That will change this month though I would guess as Albania lost to us and Georgia won their NL group. I think Georgia were about 130th when they beat us in 2015.

Shows you what a pile of pish the world rankings are though. Israel are 91st and appear to be much better than Albania.

Mind you, Albania beat Wales last night so maybe we just made them look really bad. They did beat Israel at home as well.

A lot of people commenting on the strength of the opposition forget Albania achieved something we only dream of and qualified for Euro 2016 when it’s been 20 years for us. Strong results for me apart from the bizarre debacle (hopefully an anomaly) in Haifa.

  14. I wasn’t. I’ll put my hand up, was at every game for 3 campaigns in a row but was completely un-inspired by the insipid Football I was seeing in the last short while, the Lithuania 1-1 draw was a watershed for me where I realised I wasn’t enjoying it anymore and McLeish’s appointment and subsequent team selections didn’t help either.

But I’ll be back for the qualifying campaign because I loved watching tonight and Saturday and it inspired me like I haven’t been inspired for years. Hope we can get hampden full again.

  15. Something that crossed my mind tonight and Saturday is that our creative players in this team such as Forrest, Armstrong, Fraser, Christie etc have all been fearless on the ball and their first thought is to drive at players or play aggressive forward passes and it’s honestly been really fun to watch.

Under Strachan a lot of these players would be on the park but their first thought was to play a 5 yard sideways pass instead of being brave on the ball.

My common memory of Forrest previously was him taking a touch forward and either winning a throw in or passing it back down the line to the full-back and look how direct he is now. Driving with it every time he gets the ball and showing composure, aggression and confidence.

I wonder if James McFadden’s coaching influence has had this effect on the team because this was exactly how he played. The sheer gallusness of the attacking players the last few games has been terrific.

I’ve rarely enjoyed watching Scotland as much as the last 2 games and I hope our attacking players keep this mindset.

Fair points, but did you actually watch the match?

I don't think we strung four passes together in the entire match. It's the Scottish mantra of "Launch it up the field as soon as possible!"

That bottom bit is garbage. We couldn’t get out because Ukraine were pressing us well and making it hard to play through the lines. Some of the football this 21’s and and the age groups below have played has been outstanding in recent times.

The Scottish mantra through the development squads now is play out from the gk through the thirds through interchanges and quick movements. Having a physical striker means if we can’t break a unit we can mix it up by hitting the striker and playing off him, that’s not “launch it up” that’s playing an adaptable style.

  17. I’ll give you my team and the team I think McLeish will play.

    my team:

    —————-McGregor————-

    KT McKenna Mulgrew Robbo

    ———-McGinn——Armstrong

    Forrest——C.McGregor—Fraser

    ——————Griffiths——

    Subs: Phillips, Naismith, GMS/McTominay

    McLeish’s team

    ———————McGregor——-——

    Hendry——Mulgrew—-Tierney

    O’Donnell———————Robbo

    ————McDonald——McGinn-

    ——————C McGregor——

    Naismith—————Griffiths

    Subs: Russell, Armstrong and McKenna

  18. Holland 6-0 for me. Was a watershed moment as a young fan at the time. After winning the home leg 1-0 and a relative of mine said it’ll never be as bad as that again.

The really sad fact is that those were the glory days and that night was as close as I’ve ever seen us come to qualifying.
