Barry Douglas playing a bit for a top of the table wolves team

If Barry Douglas was a right back he would have a cap by now.

Unfortunately for him, left-back is the one position where we have genuine quality.

Wolves look like they're in with a decent chance of promotion. It will be interesting to see if he can handle the step up.

McGregor shouldn't have been near the play at that point as we had an excellent attack going and only Phillips' inability to play a 2-yard pass to Forrest fked it up.

Phillips completely fkd up a really promising move (reverse pass to Christie and he's one on one), then McGregor played a 50/50 ball to Jack which Jack didn't seem to either want or be expecting.

Then the ball got played to Depay who McLean was marking. All McLean had to do was stay on his feet and not dive in, but instead he tried to do a weird sliding tackle and Depay just strolled past him. That meant McGinn got dragged out of position. At that point if McLean had tried to track Depay's run the goal could maybe have been prevented, but he just sort of jogged toward the near post.

So definitely harsh to blame McGregor for the goal.

    Right...

I maybe should have said I rate him as a winger because his pace and his dribbling cause defences problems.

But not being able to finish or hold on to the ball make him a terrible choice for CF.

  4. Apparently he wanted to call up McBurnie, but decided against it because he wants him to play against Latvia.

So now he wants to play Phillips up front.

I actually rate Phillips, but he can't finish, and he gives the ball away a lot.

    Jack Ruddy (Wolverhampton Wanderers) ***

John 'Jack' Ruddy is a goalkeeper for Wolves, meaning Wolves have two goalkeepers called John Ruddy.

That's got to be a first.

That's the thing for me, Coutts and Fleck are first choice players for a team who've had a ridiculous winning run in the last 12 months and it shows no sign of stopping.

Radio covering the game last night expressed bemusement Coutts had never had a call up, he has the best passing stats of any midfielder in the championship.

Coutts actually has completed the most passes in the Chamionship.
Narrowly ahead of Barry Bannan in 2nd, Kevin McDonald in 3rd, and Liam Bridcutt in 4th place.

  7. Ignoring the games against Malta and Lithuania, their full results so far (in order) are:

    Slovenia 1-0 Slovakia
    74'

    Slovenia 0-0 England

    Scotland 1-0 Slovenia
    88'

    Slovakia 1-0 Slovenia
    81'

    England 1-0 Slovenia
    94'

So the good news is they've only scored 1 goal in 5 games.

And the other good news is they're on a bit of a losing streak, so confidence might be low

The bad news is it's probably still going to be 0-0 well into the second half on Sunday.

And they might still think they have an outside chance of making second place.

I'd say playing for a middle of the road Championship team is about as close to the definition of "very average" as you could get.

For me, over-hyped but turned out very average are the likes of Jamie Ness and Gregg Wylde.

Both struggling for game time at 2nd-bottom-of-league-1 Plymouth Argyle.

  9. Sheffield United are currently sitting in a play-off place in the Championship and Fleck is a certain starter.

I've not actually seen him play, but "very average" seems harsh.

Comparing him in the sense that both have failed to live up to the hype. Never mind, Robbie McCrorie has just been tipped to become one of the greatest centre halves in history by his manager.

"Ross McCrorie is going to be one of the best centre halves in history, not just for this club but for this country."

IMO the "mini-messi" nickname put Gauld under huge pressure when he moved to Sporting, and probably hampered his career.

Now McCrorie has to live up to being the best centre half in history?

Aye, fingers crossed he can have a solid last 6 months of the season and at that point who knows he could be pushing for a squad place.

A good way to look at the quality of the Sporting side is maybe to think whch Scottish internationals would actually make it into their starting line up..

Gordon's not getting in ahead of Rui Patricio, much as I like Gordon.
Coates and Mathieu are better than Mulgrew and Berra.
Piccini would easily be a first choice right back.
Left back is our best shout, but they have Fabio Coentrao who has 60+ games for Real Madrid.
Carvalho's better than Brown and McArthur's passing is frankly embarrassing compared to Bruno Fernandes.
Gelson Martins, quick direct, skillful.. makes Forrest look like a clown.
Acuna is now a starter for Argentina and crosses a ball better than anyone we have.
Dost is a €12m 6'5" Dutch striker who scored 34 in 31 league games last season.
Doumbia is an Ivorian, African Cup of Nations winner that a couple of clubs have paid over €15m for.

So basically.. if Gauld was in the Sporting starting 11, then he'd have a very good case for starting for us.

Good post. Agree with you about Gauld.

Thing is, Sporting have got top quality in all the positions where we struggle: right-back, centre-half, left-midfield, and striker.

If anyone was to get a game in one of those positions for a team as good as Sporting, I imagine they'd be called up to the next squad.

btw, it seems Gauld was playing at left-midfield for Aves before his injury.

  12. The only change I would be tempted to make would be to bring in Ritchie for Forrest as Ritchie was instrumental last time we played Malta.

Apart from that as you were. And if we get 2 goals up take Brown off.

Fair comments.. i guess the problem with the 343 is competition for places is too high in certain areas.

Armstrong, Bannan, Crainey, Forest, Fraser, Philips, Ritchie, Snodgrass.
    8 players for 2 positions.

The problem with this heavy competition is that these are are most of our better players.. These are the guys we would most like on the pitch.

Good point. If we start Tierney out-of-position at right-back in a 4-2-3-1 then it allows us to play 3 of our creative players instead of just 2.

But it means we need to play someone out of position at left-midfield (even Fraser has been playing on the right this season).

Another slight problem with 3-4-3 is that we only really have Anya and Whittaker that can play as right wing backs.

Everyone seems to be going for the back 4.. I wouldn't be surprised if we went back 3 like against England.

    Gordon
    Martin - Berra - Tierney
    Anya - Brown - Morrison - Robertson
    Fraser - Armstrong
    Griffiths

I think the formation makes sense. Solves the problem of having no on-form left midfielder. Solves the problem of getting Robertson and Tierney into the same team.

I don't think Fraser will start though. And I would be surprised if Morrison or Anya starts.

Pretty sure Forest will start. Ritchie can't be far away either.

Anyone that thinks Cooper is better the Hanley needs to think about why they waste money watching football.

Strange comparison. I've not seen much of Cooper playing, but the fact that he can also play at left-back tells you he's more like Russel Martin than Hanley.

Hanley is an old-school defender who's good in the air and likes to throw himself into tackles.

If Cooper is better in the air than Russell Martin, then he's probably good enough to be in the squad.

It's time to leave out Darren Fletcher because, .. because I say so

You've said repeatedly you don't like Fletcher without giving a single reason.

Now you're comparing him to Naismith who plays in a different league and a different position.

I don't care for sentimentality. Players shouldn't be called up just for old times sake.

Did you even read my post?

There's nothing sentimental about picking your best players.

  18. Just having a quick look at who seems to have had a good start to the season and who hasn't.

In the EPL Robertson, Fletcher, and Phillips seems to have all made positive starts.

In the Championship it's Mackay, Douglas, and Cooper.

EPL players who seemingly haven't made positive starts are McArthur, Ritchie, Fraser, and Murphy.

And in the Championship Anya, Cummings, R Martin, Rhodes, Bryson, Naismith, C Martin
