Fraser Hornby makes his Everton debut tonight in the Europa League. Promising midfield talent

I see he’s been prolific for the under 23s and converted into a striker indeed.

Big target man with potential, if he’s getting first team exposure at Everton then the under 21s seems a natural step and see how he develops.

I missed this at the time. A teenage striker getting his debut at an EPL club is positive.

Scotland u19s 2-0 up against Austria at HT. Rudden and Aitchison, two good striking prospects. For the inevitable naysayers, this is u19s not 16s, so these players aren’t far away.

    SFA website is predictably useless.

But, apparently they beat Denmark 1-0 with a goal from Hornby.

And beat Austria 3-2 with 2 goals from Aitchison and 1 from Rudden.

  3. I came across a good article about Bryan Gunn just the other day

    http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/football/news-and-comment/author-of-a-different-kind-of-football-book-fighting-back-with-the-gunns-421437.html

    He's quoted as saying

    Quote

Angus is also a keeper, a fan of Robert Green and Petr Cech, and already plays for Norwich's Under-12s. "He says he wants to play for England, but I've registered him with the Scottish FA, too, don't you worry."

There's really 2 questions on this thread isn't there?

    • Position - holding midfield enforcer.

    • Captain

If we play with a holding midfielder, we have quite a few options.

If McTominay decides to play for us, then he would be the leading contender IMO.

After that, McGinn, McArthur, MacDonald, Fletcher, Coutts, Bridcutt could all play there.

I hadn't heard of Matt Smith before. Looks like a better option than Sam Gallagher at least.

Just found an interesting statistic. Excluding goalkeepers, Matt Smith has the lowest pass completion rate in the Championship. 3rd lowest is Callum Patterson, 5th lowest is Sam Gallagher.

At the other end of the scale, Tom Cairney has the highest rating in the Championship

  6. Here's a few more:

    Full backs
    Stephen Kingsley (Hull)
    Donald Love (Sunderland)

    DM
Jay Fulton (Wigan on loan from Swansea)

    Midfield
    Stephen Mallan (Barnsley)
    Theo Archibald (Brentford)

    Wingers
    Lewis MacLeod (Brentford)
    Barrie McKay (Forest)

    Forward
    Sam Gallagher (Birmingham)

While it's good that he's getting games for man utd, he hasn't been that Impressive and I don't believe he's necessarily going to make it at united as he doesn't really do anything spectacular in games. If he chooses us then good if not then it's not a massive loss imo. We often produce midfielders of his type which mccrorie is looking like a talent of similar ability and style.

I agree that he hasn't been that impressive and doesn't do anything spectacular. But we're talking about a 21 year old who is already playing at the highest level.

For me, he looks like he could be the next Darren Fletcher. So he would be a massive loss.

There's Matt Smith too. Probably having his best season in the Championship and it might be quite useful having a 6'6'' striker in the squad. We're almost always going to play with one up front so three strikers in the squad is enough. It's looking like Griffiths, McBurnie and one of Martin, Smith or Cummings.

It's definitely a weak area but if McBurnie turns out to be a good Championship/lower end Premier League striker and Griffiths stays injury free it wont look so bad.

I hadn't heard of Matt Smith before. Looks like a better option than Sam Gallagher at least.

  9. Just looking at the statistics for the Liverpool game, and Robertson completed more passes than any other player, and didn't get dispossessed once. Really positive. He still doesn't win tackles or headers, but he's slowly becoming an influential player at a top club.

Scotland’s Under-17s continued their build-up to the Euros Elite Round with a well-earned 2-1 International Challenge Match win over hosts Spain.

Brian McLaughlin’s impressive side built on Saturday’s 1-0 defeat of Poland – ranked seventh in the world at this level – with an equally eye-catching triumph over a team tipped as one of the brightest in Europe.

Aberdeen’s Dean Campbell – playing in midfield – scored twice from the penalty spot to see off the Spanish, but it was their patient possession of the ball that delighted the coaching staff.

Performance Director Malky Mackay was amongst those in attendance at the Marbella Football Centre, while 14 of the squad are Scottish FA JD Performance School participants – the first batch to have come right through a programme that is producing real results after years of hard work behind the scenes from everyone involved.

McLaughlin has often spoke of his admiration for the players at his disposal and highlighted their closeness as a group.

He said: “We are obviously over here to test ourselves against the best in Poland, Spain and France. That’s why we took on these challenging games.

“So to come out here and play possession football against Spain, on their own pitch, and win gives the boys a terrific boost going into the Elite Round.

“It gives them added belief in the way they are playing.”

Scotland round off the week with a game against France on Thursday, with a much-changed line-up expected.

This is part of the build-up to the Euros Elite Round stage. The squad reached this point on the back of an unbeaten trip to Estonia – with wins over the hosts and Andorra alongside a draw with Denmark.

The final qualification hurdle for a place in the England-based finals lies in wait in March, with Germany, hosts Greece and Norway providing the opposition.

Scotland: Mair, Patterson, Gordon, O’Connor, Ross, Hamilton, Erhahon, Campbell, Semple, Leonard, Mebude. Subs: Mullen, Taylor, Wilson, Pressley, McBride, Armer, McPake, Fitzpatrick.

Brian McLaughlin has named his latest Scotland Under-17 squad for three International Challenge Matches as he steps up his preparations for the Euros Elite Round qualifying stage.

The young Scots – featuring 14 Scottish FA JD Performance School participants – will travel to Spain on February 8 ahead of games against France, Poland and Spain.

McLaughlin’s youngsters reached the Elite Round on the back of an unbeaten trip to Estonia – with wins over the hosts and Andorra alongside a draw with Denmark.

The final qualification hurdle for a place in the England-based finals lies in wait in March, with Germany, hosts Greece and Norway providing the opposition.

The group features Heart of Midlothian defender Chris Hamilton, who was one of a number of development players taken by the club to Valencia for their winter training break.

His Tynecastle team-mates Anthony McDonald and Harry Cochrane are notable absentees but McLaughlin was happy to explain the absence of the Performance School graduate pair who have made such an impact in maroon this season.

He said: “I’m looking forward to getting together with the players and staff.

“It’s gives us a great chance to see where we are ahead of the Elite Round.

“We’re playing three of the top ten teams in the world and we’re doing so without a couple of players because of their first-team commitments.

“On this occasion I think that’s fantastic because it reflects their progress with Hearts and we enjoy a good relationship with the club.

“Regardless of who is and isn’t going, we’ll look to play our way.”

  12. Last club managed: Zamalek in Egypt in season 2015/2016

According to Wikipedia he got punted after only 10 games in charge despite a record of w6 d2 l2

However, it seems his league record was p5 w2 d1 l2

Zamalek were 3 points behind the league leaders when McLeish took over, when he got punted (5 games later!), they were 11 points behind.

Zamalek finished the season 7 points behind the league winners.

Mcburnie will be championship level imo. At least Griffith's is only 27, so we have him for a good few years yet, Sam Gallagher will most likely play for us as he ain't going to get a game for England although he looks championship level as well.

It's too early to say with McBurnie. After 1 start he has 1 goal and got MOTM.

I agree Sam Gallagher probably is going to be a Championship level striker

Chris Martin came off the bench to get his first goal for Reading at the weekend.

  14. On a positive note Smith has stepped back, but in a WTF moment, John Hughes in the record today:

    Quote

“I feel I deserve an interview for the Scotland job.

“I certainly deserve to be treated as a serious candidate. Why should John Hughes not get an interview?

“I want the job for the right reasons. I will do it for nothing. I am very patriotic.

I'm starting to wish we'd kept Strachan

Are you insane.  Walter smith has no thought or vision???  He is one of the greatest Scottish managers of all time.  That's a fact.

I'll give you a fact - he put out a team with 5 centre-halfs against Belarus.

Pressley Weir Webster Dailly and Caldwell

That's not the kind of vision I want in the next Scotland manager.

  16. 18 minutes ago, Third Lanark said:

Whatever folk think of Walter, will you please stop discounting him because 'he walked out on us'. A more acceptable reason would be that he has been too long away from things. McLeish walked out on us for Birmingham (!); Tommy Docherty walked out on us for Man U - any manager will walk out on us for a top club job. Fact.  MON would have walked for a good job if he had been a success with us.

Even discounting the fact that he walked out on us mid-campaign (something McLeish and Docherty didn't do), he's been out of the game for years, and even when he was in his prime, he wasn't good enough.

Strachan was no great Scotland manager but he was nowhere near as bad as some people on here make out. Granted, he made some mistakes and presided over some undeniably poor results but 12 wins from 26 competitive matches is a decent record.  Both Craig Levein and George Burley only won 3 competitive games each.

There are some genuine managerial duds with their names in the frame at the moment. I share your concern that we could find ourselves facing a return to the truly dismal Burley/Levein era.

Totally agree with this. The list of names in the frame makes for depressing reading.

    Smith
    McLeish
    Mackay
    Gemmill
    Caldwell
    Clarke

Fraser is doing well in a better league, as is Forrest (Champions league). Paterson should be the contingency plan. Not plan A.

Fraser does sometimes play right-wing-back for Bournemouth, so maybe he would be a better option. Then again, Fraser has played practically every position on the park for Bournemouth.

Has Forrest ever played wing-back before?

  19. 9 hours ago, Tartan blood said:

I guess you mean 3-4-3 with Fraser, Griffiths and Forrest as our front 3. Yes, Paterson could go on the right of a 4 but do we really need him in there? We have an abundance of midfield talent, why is it so important to shoe horn him in? Having a back 3 means we don't really need to play him at all.

We have an abundance of midfield options. Who do we have that's an automatic pick? Or how many current midfielders can you name that have scored a goal for us?
