I think they have to do a bit more now to be tied iirc

Nah, playing a competitive game still pretty much ties you.

There are ways to change after, but you need to have not been picked for three years, and to have played fewer than three games (including friendlies) before you were 21.  He’s 21 in November so if he plays in three games before then he can’t switch.  If he plays any after then he can’t switch. And if he plays in a major tournament finals he can’t switch.

Basically, you wouldn’t commit unless you were sure cos the escape clauses are really difficult to qualify for.

2026 if I understand correctly so eligible for next World Cup if they qualify

Needs to have been resident in Canada for five years, so that would be end of July 2026, which is after the World Cup has finished.  He’ll be 30 going on 31, so if Scotland haven’t capped him by then and he wants to then try Canada, surely that’s fair enough?

I wish he’d test himself in a good European league and give himself a chance of playing for Scotland, but I suppose he dry his tears at not being picked with some of his massive pile of dollar bills.

He’s joining their B team who play friendlies only. I guess if he does well he might make the first team in due course but it’s a long shot

I remember Ali Coote going from Utd to Brentford B when it looked like he was the next big thing.  He’s now 25 and playing for Bohemians in Dublin.

  4. I’d be applying for UEFA tickets in the ballot before I started throwing money like that around.  I got tickets for the Stade de France in 2016 and Hampden in 2020, probably for about 1 in 8 I applied for.

If Scotland end up in Berlin or Dortmund there could be 10,000+ tickets for SSC so just try and get your points as high as you can between now and end of campaign and you never know.

Can’t have more than 6 in a group because there are only 10 match days per group. That doesn’t explain why they don’t keep the current format of 10 groups of 5 or 6. Group winners qualify as of right and 10 runners up go into playoffs with 2 best placed group winners from Nations League who did not finish in top 2.

Go back to 2 legged playoffs and you’ve got your 16 qualified teams.

On the other hand, if there are 12 groups and Scotland could continue to improve to get into the top 12 then the second seed could be significantly less strong than with fewer groups.

Having a quick look at the qualification process for world cup 2026. Its going to be 16 teams from europe who qualify. That gives a slightly better chance. We need to make sure we are a pot 2 team for that qualifying campaign and hope for a favourable group.

"The qualifying group stage will feature twelve groups of four or five teams. The winner of each group will qualify for the World Cup finals, while the second-placed teams will either qualify directly or participate in play-off matches.[3]"

Pulled that from wiki. Not sure i would fancy our chances in that system. We would likely play more than 1 play off match i think. Assuming we finished second. Tough ask for us to finish 1st. We would probably have to be a pot 1 team for that to happen.

World cup will always be a tough ask for any scotland manager tbf.

Why are they having 12 groups of 4 or 5 with play offs instead of a more sensible 8 groups with 6 or 7 and top two qualify?  Seems unnecessarily complicated.
    Too many fixtures maybe?

Adam, I think what MacWomble is saying is that away tickets (posted out by the SFA/SSC) are A4 bits of paper.

Ah!  Well, the home end tickets are also A4 bits of paper so makes sense.

Arrived by post! A4 paper tix!

Bizarre - had you already printed them?

I printed mine at the time, but they won’t arrive by post cos I changed my address just in case they thought a Scottish address for the Norway end was a bit suss.

Did Torp for the Vogts friendly many years ago... effectively just a shed in the middle of nowhere, but the links were not bad then (I would say Glasgow to Manchester is a bit of a stretch, as it took just under 2 hours from what I recall, so is more like Glasgow to Perth).

From what I was told from a Norwegian I knew from Uni, Sandefjord which the airport serves, is a pretty sizable city and you can do the train to Oslo now (but the difference in time is something like minutes, rather than any great savings).

Ryanair time the buses for the flights, so there will most certainly be a bus for your flight (chances are it will depart about 4 hours before your departure)

    Cheers.

I can do Glasgow to Perth in an hour though - maybe Manchester was stretching it a bit. I’ll settle on Kendal.

Getting back for the 10:30 flight on the Sunday morning is the worry, that’s what’s making me lean towards car hire.

  10. FFS, so of course, when booking I neglected to do my due diligence and therefore did not find out that Torp is to Oslo as Manchester is to Glasgow.

I assume I’m not the only tubesteak that has done this - there’s no train, a long and expensive bus ride (cutting it fine for early return on Sunday) or car hire that costs more for two days than a Ford Sierra i once bought.

it only lasted a few days right enough, but it had a cracking stereo.

Is everyone just bussing it are they?

  11. I’m reading all these posts saying how the system isn’t unfair.  I’m not seeing anyone saying it’s not fair.  Frustrating, aye, but that’s down to tiny allocations, but it’s clearly fair.

I repeatedly come back to this point when I see people moaning about the points system. I was on 0 points until around 5 years ago and now get tickets when they go up for sale every time.

Go to games/buy tickets = get points.

Is it mathematically possible to have gone from zero to 18 or more in just five years?  I’ve got 11 (rising to 12 after these games cos the Moldova home game I missed dropped off) which is every home game plus 2 points for renewing for three campaigns or more.

Had to go home end in Ireland, and it’s home end in Norway.

Only games that were available in last four years were Austria and Turkey, so that would’ve made 16.  And Armenia would be 18, but I couldn’t have got any more than that.

Also since the team started doing well.

Not sure the system can be any fairer than it is. Pretty sure the likes of Albania it was a free for all. Same with Macedonia etc. Those who have gone regularly or even fairly regularly for years, through good and bad are currently being rewarded when tickets are scarce.

Was the same during the euros. You only had to have been at 4 or 5 of the last 10 away games (and all the home games) to get tickets. I can't mind the criteria for tickets for those 10 away games but i'm pretty sure the majority of them from memory went to 0 points.

I've missed out on away tickets before, it's annoying but that's the nature of the beast.

Not disagreeing at all.  Just frustrating that’s there’s only been two opportunities for low-pointers to boost their totals in four years.

I could’ve tried for Armenia I suppose, didn’t imagine that would have been possible.

5 out the last 10 been open to all members. Armenia went to 9 so you would have got one with only home games attended.

However, since Covid only Turkey and Austria have gone to all members and both had very short timescales to organise.

It's a bit of a double edged sword. The higher the allocation the more point levels will drop. However it also decreases the likelihood of pick ups. 3 of us had around 12-15 points and went to Faroes away. Got tickets no bother at airport but no points for it. All that being said I can't think of a better system but ticket pick ups would much fairer

    It is what it is.

Would love to go to Cyprus in September but reckon the chances of a home or away ticket is very low.
