Ran the Highland Fling again on Saturday. Was looking for a PB and breaking 9h but a lot has happened since entry in October. A new job and moving back to Scotland has meant little to no training. So was absolutely amazed to come in just 23min slower than last year, even made the last checkpoint in the same time as last year. Would definitely recommend it if anyone is looking at moving up to a longer distance, and certainly value for money!

Well done,  I ran in the relay, ran the Drymen to Rowerdennan leg. Really enjoyed it, Balmaha to Rowerdennan was quite hard going. Maybe contemplate full fling for next year. Good to see Donnie Campbell and Beth Pascall smash the men and women records.

Ok, I'll rephrase then.  I don't really mean luck, but I think it should be considered that this ten game unbeaten run is comprised of games against Finland, Qatar, Romania, Faroes, Hungary, Greece, Finland, Latvia, Wales and Slovenia.  Of those, their only wins were at home to Finland, away to Faroes, at home to an imploding Greece and home friendlies v Latvia and Slovenia.

They haven't played Germany, Poland, Ireland, Czech Republic or the like, it's been a run of games against low to middling opposition.  Any team can look successful with a soft programme like that.

My other point is that there are fewer games in internationals and success or failure can depend on a single balls-up like Scotland had in Georgia.  Without that disaster - or a miraculous result like Ireland had when they rescued their campaign at home to Germany - Scotland would be at the Euros and the outlook would be as bleak as it seems now.

Iceland - I'll give you that, but their success is the product of a studied, long term approach and has given some genuinely superb results.

The part about playing Germany etc reads like an SFA press release

Anyone else not get the Stubbs admiration thing? Dont quite understand why BBC Scotland drool over him.

They drool over most managers/players on Radio Scotland, mostly because they are all pals of them. Check Chick Young's interview with Strachan couple of months ago. Did not ask him one searching question about failure to get a play off position. I think Strachan give him the questions to ask.

Jon - you need to think why you are needing a rain jacket. Is it really to keep you dry or just to keep you slightly warmer?

I have a fairly reasonable quality 'breathable' jacket (I think its a Marmot Precip which I only bought as a race kit list required a waterproof jacket with taped seams) but really once you are running the inside gets so wet that all it does is keep you warm. Even just a pre-race warm up and its wet. Good for up in the hills when the weather turns cold and windy.

I also have a lightweight Montane Minimus thing that folds down to the size of an apple (actually its a womans size bought off E-bay for £15 but does the job). Its not really waterproof but keeps the worst off and the wind out.

Montane and OMM get a good name in fell/ultra running circles.

Cheers I look in to these 1s. I've got Montane one just now but it's only really useful for light showers, not the snow I got caught in on a run on Saturday.

  5. Not related to big dunk specifically, but their seem to be a lot of footballers having to pay back sums to HMRC on the back of the ice-breaker types schemes being declared dodgy.

Think the Guardian said there were over 100 premier league players and ex-players down south in trouble. Know from experience these were actively marketed in Scotland.

So probably going to be seeing a lot more players in dunks shoes, over the coming months....

Darren Jackson in court last month, tax man chasing £270k, some tax scheme that involved investing in film industry, that's now been found dodgy.
