  1. Paris marathon on Sunday; my first and last. Glad I've done one, no desire to do another. It was a great weekend, with lovely weather, Paris looked at its best in the spring sunshine. The marathon was much bigger than I had realised (c15,000 more than London) and was superbly well organised. Huge crowds out to cheer us all on, and unlike some events (most notably Edinburgh) the route used the backdrop of the city to full effect. Back to more sensible running distance now though, which are much more enjoyable.

I've said never again before. London a week on Sunday...
  2. Good to hear, how did you get on? How were the race conditions?

I've got a PB for 10km, although not in a race situation.

There were a few reasons i didn't do it, the main one is that i've been injured for most of the last 3 months. I sprained my ankle about 10 weeks ago, came back after 4 weeks and pulled my groin right away. So have only been able to run for the last 10 days or so. It would've been a battle to get anywhere close to my best time. So, aye, I went to the pub with a bird rather than running.

One of the guys i sometimes run with got a great time of just over 38mins. I'll probably go a run on the 10km route one night in the coming weeks, see how i get on.

Conditions were better than I'd expected given the forecasts. It was pretty windy but not as windy as last year and the rain pretty much held off till I'd finished. If you've not been running much then you probably did the right thing by not running. I actually rolled my ankle just about the halfway point but seemed/seems to be OK thankfully. Did it in 38:43 which was a PB by 2 mins and about 6 mins faster than same race last year. Fairly chuffed with that!

  3. Anyone doing the Grangemouth 'Round the Houses 10k on Sunday?

It's the first proper race i've ever done.

I'd have preferred to not have been injured for most of the last 10 weeks. Then i'd have been aiming at about 40mins, rather than about 43mins.

It's a route i'll probably do again in a few weeks, solely to get a PB

Current PB is 42:31, so if i can get within a minute of that on Sunday, i'll be pretty chuffed.

Sacking my run tomorrow and going to the pub tonight. :)

How have you got a PB if it's your first race or do you mean you did it before? Hope you enjoyed the pub - you missed a good race!

  4. 789,024 postal ballots

    738,526 returned

Using 70% No - 221,558 Yes; 516,969 No - which would be the modified number

Taking away the postal votes - 1,396,431 Yes; 1,484,957 No - on the day.

Using 55% No - 332,337 Yes; 406,190 No - which would be the accurate number.

    On the day + accurate - 1,728,768 Yes; 1,891,147 No (47.8% Yes; 52.2% No)

Wouldn't have changed the outcome, but the vote would've been much closer.

    We are the 48

  5. I'm thinking of getting back in to running over the next few weeks and doing the Grangemouth "Round the Houses" 10km, on 12th April.

Anyone else doing it? Apparently it's a flat course and good for getting a quick time...

Got my 10k PB there last year. As flat as a pancake.

Doubt I'll get a PB. Not ran much this year (just five a sides 2x week for cardio) as I've been trying to bulk up.

It'll give me a bit motivation to get out and run over the next fortnight though.

I'm doing this and certainly PB hunting as I have got parkrun, HM and Marathon PBs in the last fortnight. Haven't got great times last 2 years but 2 years ago it was snowing/sleet (only time I've worn a jacket in a race) and last year I almost got blown off my feet it was so windy. Hopefully this year will be better.

Race ya! (forwards preferably ;) )

  6. Only just started using gels for my recent marathon. Not sure if they helped or not but they didn't 'disagree' with me like the one other time I tried one at the London Marathon (silly time to experiment). I did use one on Sunday in Alloa but this was really because I hadn't eaten very well for the previous few days for other reasons. I otherwise would not have bothered for a half. My advice would be if you've not tried them before then in a race is not the time to start just in case you have a similar experience to mine in London!

Hadn't done Alloa before but found the second half very difficult, partly as I went off far too fast, partly due to the hills, and partly due to lack of food and the previous week's marathon. Enjoyed it though and got a PB by almost 3 mins!

Well done on your times Deecie!

  7. Well Meadows Marathon for me today. Excellent preparation yesterday, having managed to get the day off work, consisted of helping clear my wife's granddad's loft and inhaling approx 2kg of dust. Not feeling great but seems to have affected my younger daughter more as she has spent most of the night doing a session consisting of 4786 x forced cough with 8 second recoveries. Suffice to say I am knackered before I start!

  8. Can any of the 3 of them play central defence?

    McGregor

    Gordon Marshall

(Not my preferred order, just a suggestion on formation)

  9. Absolutely loved the National Cross Country today.

Toughest race I've ever done, but also the most enjoyable.

That was a proper cross country out there today - total quagmire, pishing rain and wind, and fecking Baltic. Still a great turnout, enjoyed the race even if the conditions scuppered hope of a decent time

I also enjoyed it in a perverse way. Glad I gave my spikes only their second ever outing as they were a godsend. We were lucky the rain went off a bit for us but the ground was destroyed by then. That's 4 XC races I've done now and in each one the men's race was last. I can only assume that this will be reversed next season.

  10. I done the half version a couple of years back. Didn't really enjoy it to be honest. 7 laps around the meadows (14 for the marathon), partly ran over cobbles. I also fail to see how 7 laps (14 for the marathon) can work out at exactly 13.1 / 26.2 miles.

It was a good atmosphere though and pretty busy - don't mean to put you off!

The lack of a lot of club runners at it is telling I guess...

Hope you enjoy more than I did!

Thanks! Not sure if there are cobbles this year - it goes into Crichton St and they have said the turning points will be positioned to give exact distance. My club actually have a different event (Gartmorn 6) on their Grand Pix competition the same day. I'm only really doing it to hopefully get the 4 hour monkey off my back by actually running the whole way before having a proper crack at London.
